The Stubborn Child chapter 6
Johnny’s mouth hung open in shock, his eyes filling up with tears. He had no idea why, but this was the last straw for him that day. He was usually better at keeping himself together, but for some reason, this of all things tipped his emotions over the edge. How could Nicholas have kept the fact that he had 3 children from him, his own brother? He didn’t want Diego to see him cry for the second time that day, he’d call him weak, so he quickly wiped his eyes and shook off all the thoughts of Nicholas. Gyro noticed the look on Johnny’s face and wrapped his arm around his shoulder to comfort him/ Johnny looked up at the taller man then at the ground, blushing furiously. “I-I think we all understand now, right guys?” Johnny asked.
The others nodded again.
"Great!" Margaret said, trying to bring the attention back to her noticing his face as well.
"So, umm… What now?” Hot Pants inquired, still not entirely sure why Diego had dragged her here.
"I think this is the part where you go away." Margaret said glaring at Diego.
“I agree, however, I’m not leaving alone!” With that, he slung Margret over his shoulder and bolted out the door, forgetting Hot Pants in the room.
Hot Pants blinked, still needing to process what had just happened. "Did he-"
“Yup.” Johnny answered before she even finished.
"So are we going to go get her or..?" Gyro asked.
Johnny sighed. "Did you really just ask that?"
"Well-"
"Yes. Gyro. The answer is yes."
Hot Pants giggled. ”Wow, you two sure do argue a lot for racing partners. Honestly your spats sound more like lover’s quarrels but the both of you are too oblivious to know why I mentioned that.”
"Did you not hear the question he just asked?!"
“You two fight like my parents! This is absolutely hilarious!”
" Are we going to get Margaret or not?" Gyro interrupted.
"Yes, but what do you want me to do, get up and chase Diego down!?”
Gyro went red in embarrassment. “Uh, well, I mean, I think we both wish you could but-"
"I'm going to stop you there. It’d be in all of our best interests for you not to finish that thought."
Gyro sighed before picking Johnny up and placing him in his wheelchair, the smaller of the two pouting the whole time.
Meanwhile, in the lobby, Margret was putting up quite a fight but to no avail, Diego had a tight grip on her and wasn’t letting her go until he got what he wanted. Margret rolled her eyes. “Can you put me down now?” She huffed.
“There’s not a chance in the world that I’d do that! Well, not until Johnny apologizes to me at least…”
“Why do you want that? I was the one who made you mad.”
"Today? Sure. Every other day of this race? Not so much.”
“Oh really? How did he anger you then?”
“Do you really want me to list every single way?”
Margret smirked. “Go for it, I’m not going anywhere.”
“You little-“ Diego sighed. First of all, whenever I’m trying to have a snack, he always yells, ‘you’re not supposed to eat rocks you stupid dino’, and I say, ‘mate, just shut up!' Then-"
Margret burst into a fit of laughter. “I didn’t think you’d actually do it! This is too good!”
"Nobody actually gives a list of things unless they're stupid but I mean…"
Diego growled under his breath.
"Wait, did you just growl?"
“What of it?”
"That's hilarious!"
Diego grumbled but didn’t respond for fear of letting this little girl know that she was making him angry. Margret snickered. “What’s wrong? Am I making you mad?” She said mockingly.
"O-Of course not!"
"Really? Because it seems like I am."
Just as Diego was formulating a response, he heard the elevator door slide open. He whipped around to see who was inside of it, gasping when he saw his mortal enemy. He quickly debated whether to run or not but decided it wasn’t worth it. As soon as Johnny was close enough, he plopped Margret onto his lap. He then yelled, “Just take her! I don’t care anymore!” as he ran away.
Gyro stood there in shock.
"Well, I saw that coming." Johnny said, turning around.
"So that's why you didn't seem worried!"
Margret feigned sadness. "You weren't worried about me?!"
“I was!” Gyro exclaimed.
Margaret and Johnny started laughing. Gyro chuckled slightly. “Your mood sure changed quickly!”
Johnny was smiling, he didn’t realize it, but he had a sincere smile on his face. “Yeah, I guess it did.”
Gyro stared at the adorable sight before him, wondering why he had never seen Johnny like this before. Margaret, wondering why he was staring at her uncle, turned to look at him and in shock exclaimed "Wait, you can smile?!"
“I guess. Why do you ask?”
“Seriously? Are you ok?!”
“What? I don’t get it.”
"You need help!"
Johnny’s smile faltered. “Why?! I'm so confused!”
“Alright, that's enough!" Gyro interrupted, grabbing the little girl and putting his hand over her mouth.
“What the heck is up with y’all?!”
"Nothing!"
“Ok..?”
Margret pulled Gyro’s hand off of her mouth and said, “Ah, I love the smell of lies!”
Gyro blushed sheepishly. "Lies? What lies?"
“We both know exactly what I mean.”
"No, I don't." Gyro said, putting Margaret down.
"Wait, did you leave Hot Pants in the room alone with my bird?! Margaret said, closing the elevator door.
Gyro sighed. “Alright, you’re got two options. Either I leave you down here while I go get Margret or, you probably won’t like this one, I carry you up the stairs and we solve the problem together. You pick.”
"Do you really think you can handle that alone?"
“Yes..?”
"No."
“Well then, I guess I’m carrying you!”
Johnny sighed. “Fine. Let’s go.”
Gyro smiled and scooped Johnny up out of his wheelchair and carried him up to their room. They raced up the stairs and when they reached their door, Johnny pushed it open. The pair expected to find a full-on war when they arrived, instead, however, they found Margret sitting on her bed, holding her bird, and talking jovially to Hot Pants. Gyro’s jaw dropped. “Johnny, am I seeing what I think I’m seeing?”
“Depends. What’dya think you’re seein’?”
"You know what? Forget it. Let’s just see what they’re talking about.”
“Whatever.”
Gyro giggled. “That’s the most enthusiasm I’ve heard from you in a while!”
Johnny sighed. “Uh-huh.”
Gyro grinned and plopped Johnny on the bed beside Diego’s abandoned partner then sat down next to him. “What’re we talking about? Seems interesting!”
Margret smiled. “Not much really. We’re just swapping funny stories.”
Gyro raised an eyebrow. “Stories about what?”
“You guys!” Margret chuckled.
“And Diego,” Hot Pants added.
Now Johnny was interested. “Well, don’t let us get in the way. Feel free to keep goin’.”
Gyro chuckled. “I might have a few stories about Johnny I can contribute.”
Johnny slapped his hand over the Italian’s mouth. “Oh no, you don’t! Not before I tell some about you!”

The Stubborn Child Chapter Five
Margret said nothing, her only response was a frustrated groan. As soon as the sound left her mouth, something began to materialize behind her. Before anyone could get a good look at it, she disappeared. The next thing they knew, the bathroom door slammed and locked. Johnny crawled over to investigate. He pressed his ear to the door, straining to hear what was going on inside. The only thing he could hear was a strange noise in a voice he didn’t quite recognize. It was something like ‘uro uro’. Johnny sat there for a moment, confused at what he had just heard. He thought about what it could be for a moment before he realized what it was; a stand cry. He made his way back over to Gyro to tell him what he had heard. “Margret has a stand?!” Gyro asked, bewildered.
“I think so…”
"You think so? What do you mean you think so?"
“It’s not like I saw it or anything! I just heard something through the door and saw that blurry thing behind her before she disappeared!”
“Do you think she might be an enemy stand user?”
“She’s 10!”
“She’s smart though!”
“But she’s not evil!”
“I’m not saying she’s fully evil, I’m just saying she might be smart enough to accept payment to bump us off or something!”
“You make it sound like she’s in a gang or something! I don’t know why, but I trust her.” Johnny said, having completely forgotten the conversation they’d had the night before.
“Oh, are you showing feelings now Mr. I-don’t-care? What’s so special about her? It took you forever to trust me and you trust her after a day?!”
“Who’s jealous of a kid now?” Johnny thought.
“Well? Are going to answer me?”
“I- Well… Uh… I don’t-”
Diego interrupted. “What is going on here?!”
“None of your business!” Johnny snapped.
“Ugh, fine! This is no fun anyway!” Diego huffed before stomping out the door and slamming it behind him. (plot twist Diego is lestening through the door)
“Now that he’s gone,” Gyro whispered, “answer my question.”
“Well…“ Johnny trailed off, trying to remember why he trusted Margret so quickly, then it all came flooding back to him. “Because she’s my niece!”
Gyro froze. The conversation from the night before was coming back to him bit by bit. “Wait, are you sure?”
“Not entirely…”
“You know what? I’m going to ask her right now.”
Gyro placed himself as close to the door as he could with Johnny sitting in front of it. “Margret?’ He asked. “May I come in?”
A shuffling sound came from behind the door followed by the click of the lock. Gyro took that as a yes and opened the door. “Hey. Are you alright?”
Margret was sitting in the bathtub, her face wet with tears. “Yeah… I just hate it when people fight…”
“I’m sorry.” Gyro sympathized.
She sniffled. “It’s ok…”
Gyro smiled comfortingly. He sat down next to the little girl and said, “I have a question if you don’t mind me asking.”
Margret sniffed and wiped her eyes with her sleeve. “Alright, go for it.”
Gyro cleared his throat, looked at Johnny for confirmation, then asked, “Why did your mom send you on this journey?”
She stared at him for a moment before answering. “She… sent me to find my dad…”
“I see.” Gyro replied.
“Do you remember anything about him?” Johnny asked from the main part of the room.
“Only what Mama told me… She says I look just like him…”
Gyro and Johnny looked at each other, mutual understanding flowing between them. Then, Johnny decided to ask another question. “Do you know his name?”
She thought for a moment. “Um… Mama always called him Nick…”
Johnny felt his heart rising in his throat and tears welling up in his eyes. “Was it short for Nicholas..?”
“I-I think so. Why are you asking me all these questions?”
“Because…” Johnny replied. “My brother Nicholas looked an awful lot like you.”
“What do you mean ‘looked’?” Margret asked, slightly afraid of the answer she would get.
“Well, he- uh... passed away a few years ago.” Johnny answered, a single tear sliding down his cheek.
“Oh…” This was exactly what she had been afraid of, but what bothered her more was the fact that Johnny was crying. She couldn’t believe it. The sight of his tears brought a few of her own burning hot paths down her face and onto her light pink dress.
Johnny couldn’t believe he was crying either. He should have gotten used to the fact that his brother’s death was his fault by now, or at least that’s what he kept telling himself. No matter how many times he told himself that it was him who caused the accident by releasing Danny into the woods, he just couldn’t get over the overwhelming sadness it caused him every time he even thought about Nicholas. He took a deep breath and tried to compose himself. “So… I guess that makes you my niece.”
Margret leaped up out of the bathtub and tackled Johnny with the biggest hug he had ever gotten from anyone in his family. “I love you, Uncle Johnny!”
This statement caused more tears to pour from Johnny’s eyes and onto his niece’s shoulder. Gyro jumped up to join the hug, accidentally pressing his face into Johnny’s cheek and leaving a smudge of green lipstick on his racing partner. None of them noticed. They were too busy hugging each other and bawling their eyes out.

The Stubborn Child Chapter Four
The next morning, Gyro was the first to wake up. He called room service to order some breakfast for the group and then got out of bed to clean himself up. Once the chocolate almond muffins and coffee had arrived, Gyro woke Johnny up. Johnny groaned and sat up, rubbing the sleep out of his eyes. He slumped back against the pillows and asked, “What’s goin’ on? Why’d you wake me up?”
Gyro laughed. “Can’t you smell it? I got breakfast!”
Margret, who had just woken up, giggled and said, "You’re silly. Just because someone wakes you up doesn't mean something is wrong or something happened."
Johnny huffed. “You don’t know what we’ve been through during this race. We’ve been attacked by stand users almost every day! I bet you don’t even know what a stand is!”
"I DO!" Margret said, a bit too loudly.
“Oh yeah?” Johnny challenged, “Explain stands to me then!”
"A stand is…" Margret started.
Johnny interrupted. "That's what I thought!"
"Shhhh!" Margret said.
"Don't shush me!"
"Be quiet. I hear something." Margaret said seriously.
"What? I don't hear anything. Are you stalling?"
Gyro pressed his ear to the door. “She’s right. Someone’s out there.’
“What? Let me listen!”
Gyro lifted Johnny out of bed and placed him next to the door. After a moment of listening, Johnny backed away. “I can’t believe it. You’re right! I think I know who’s out there too.”
Margret dove under her bed as Gyro stood up to open the door. There he was, exactly who Johnny thought would be there: Diego Brando. He was mumbling something about framing Johnny for a crime or something like that. Johnny laughed quietly and whispered, “I don’t think he’s smart enough to do that…”
As soon as he said that, Diego whipped around to face the duo, unaware of the child quietly giggling at what Johnny had said under the bed. “Well, well, well, if it isn’t my two least favorite people-You!” Diego exclaimed.
“What do you want, Dino Boy?” Johnny asked sarcastically.
“Who me? I don’t really want much… Except to ruin your lives!!!”
Johnny rolled his eyes at this. “You’re too stupid to be able to do that.”
Diego gasped, horribly offended by Johnny’s remark. “You’re no smarter than, oh I don’t know, a ten-year-old!”
"Do you think he knows?" Gyro whispered to Johnny.
"If he wasn't so stupid, he probably would know, but since he is so dumb, he probably doesn't know about the kid under the bed. He’s so dumb he still wouldn't know if I told him." Johnny whispered back.
"I'm right here!" Diego yelled.
Margret burst into loud, genuine laughter. She laughed so hard she started crying.
"Who is that?” Diego inquired.
Gyro hurriedly closed the door most of the way. “Nobody. Why do you ask?”
Diego raised an eyebrow. “You’re obviously lying. Why don’t you just tell me the truth? It can’t be that bad.”
“Did I say it was nobody? I meant to say it’s someone with no body… Uh… It was a ghost! Our room is haunted!”
“Are you kidding me?! How stupid do you think I am?”
Johnny pipped up. “Very.”
“NO ONE ASKED YOU JOESTAR!!!” Diego shouted loud enough for the entire hotel to hear.
“You kinda did…” Gyro said under his breath.
“SHUT YOUR MOUTH!!! I DON’T CARE!!! JUST TELL ME WHAT THE NOISE WAS!!!”
“Why do you even care?!” Johnny asked.
“I don’t know, why were you walking around town with a kid? Did you have a kid Joestar?”
“No! Idiot! I’m not old enough for that…”
“I mean, technically you are but she’d have to be one or younger…” Gyro added.
“Shut up!” Johnny yelled.
“If there’s nobody other than you in there, why don’t you let me in?” Diego inquired.
“Why would we let you in? Weren’t you just muttering about framing me or something?” Johnny asked.
“Wait, framing you?” Gyro interrupted. “For what?”
“KIDNAPPING PROBABLY!"
“Ah-ha!” Diego shouted. “So you do have a kid with you!”
Johnny attempted to explain. "Who said we actually had a kid here? I just said that’s probably the crime you would frame me for.”
“Why would I frame you for kidnapping if you don’t have a kid with you?!”
"Because you’re an imbecile!"
“I’m the imbecile?! Really?”
“Yeah, Dino Boy! I said it! What’re you gonna do about it?” Johnny taunted.
Diego shoved the door open and burst inside. "You wanna go!?"
“Bring it!” Johnny yelled.
Gyro stepped between them and held out his arms to keep them apart. “Woah woah woah! Not in the hotel room! Come on, guys! Do you know how much we would have to pay if you two damaged anything?”
"Oh yeah." Johnny said.
“I guess you didn’t think about that, huh?” Gyro inquired, slightly annoyed.
Johnny looked down, embarrassed. “I didn’t…”
Gyro’s expression softened. “It’s ok. Just don’t break anything, alright?”
“Yeah… ok…”
Gyro and Johnny stared at each other, completely oblivious to the world around them. While they were lost in each other’s eyes, Diego began to search the room. First, he looked under the nightstand. Nothing there. Next, under Gyro and Johnny’s bed. No luck. Then he checked the bathroom. Nada. Finally, he looked under Margret’s bed. “Jackpot!”
Johnny and Gyro snapped out of their ‘staring contest’ and whipped around to face Diego. “What in the world are you doing?!” Johnny shouted.
“Proving that you do have a child here in your room!” Diego replied.
“I… I have no idea what you’re talking about.”
"I think you do." Diego answered.
Gyro chimed in. "Mmm… I think not."
Diego grabbed Margret’s ankle and dragged her out from under the bed. "Then who is this?"
“I don't see anyone. You’re seein’ things!” Johnny challenged.
"AM NOT!" Diego yelled.
Margaret rolled her eyes at their childish fight, then said, "Will you two stop being such babies? You’re acting like a bunch of preschoolers who didn’t get the juice they wanted!"
"Am not!" Diego exclaimed.
"No… she's right. You definitely are." Johnny said.
"I'm pretty sure she was talking about both of you." Gyro chimed in.
"I was." Margret said, standing up.
Diego walked to the door but then he heard Johnny mumble, "Idiot."
He flung himself around so that he was face to face with Johnny. "Really?!"
Right when they were about to start yelling at each other again, they heard a frustrated voice coming from the back of the room. "Will you two cut it out?!?!"
Johnny and Gyro sat there in shock. They'd never heard her so mad. Diego just stood there confused. The room was dead silent. After a few moments of awkward silence, Gyro piped up. “Uh, Margret? Are you ok?”

The Stubborn Child Chapter Three
The group started off farther into town to search for an inn, Gyro in the lead with Johnny trailing slightly behind. After a bit of looking, they came across the Stardust Hotel, a nice hotel on the other side of the city from where they had started. They tied up their horses out front and went inside to book a room. The lobby was quite grand. It had marble floors, nice chairs around a fireplace, a big chandelier in the middle of the lobby, and lots of greenery scattered around tastefully. Gyro set Johnny down in one of the chairs by the fire and went to the reception desk to check them in.
They took the elevator up to their room on the third floor. Once they got out of the elevator, Margret clung to Gyro’s leg. The Neapolitan looked down at her confusedly. “What are you doing?”
“Hitching a ride!” She replied jovially.
Gyro shrugged and continued down the hall to their room. He opened the door, walked into the room, and plopped Johnny down onto the bed. Now that he had his hands free, he turned to Margret, who was still firmly wrapped around his leg like a koala. “Could you please get off my leg now?”
No answer. He looked down to find the wee one fast asleep, still clinging to him as if her life depended on it. He smiled softly before gently prying her off of him and tucking her into the other bed in the room. Once she was all snug in her bed, Gyro pulled off his boots and stretched out next to Johnny. He put his arm around the younger man’s shoulders and pulled him closer. “So, are you feeling better now that you can lie down comfortably?” Gyro asked.
“I guess. You didn’t have to get a room at such an expensive place, you idiot.”
Gyro chuckled at the insult, knowing that Johnny didn’t mean a word of it. “I know I didn’t have to, but I wanted to get the nicest room I could so we could all be comfortable.”
Johnny blushed and snuggled even closer to Gyro. “Thanks...”
“What for?” Gyro inquired.
“I don’t know… Everything? You’ve done so many nice things for me over the time we’ve known each other and I never thanked you so I figured I’d do it now I guess…”
Gyro smiled and rested his head on top of Johnny’s. “You’re welcome.”
The pair stayed there for a bit before Gyro called room service to get them some dinner. He ordered some gorgonzola and tomato risotto and some spinach and lobster spaghetti with a side of ale bread with mint and bilberry jam. He also got a few bottles of wine and some water for Margret.
Once the food arrived, Gyro woke Margret up so she could eat. They enjoyed their dinner, then Margret took a bath, brushed her teeth, and went back to bed.  Johnny and Gyro sat on their bed, sipping wine and chatting. Gyro had his arm around Johnny’s shoulders again and both their faces were flushed from the alcohol they were drinking. They had enjoyed a whole bottle of wine by the time Johnny said, “Hey Gyro, I think I might know who’s kid Margret is…”
Gyro raised his eyebrows, intrigued by what his racing partner had said. “Oh really? Who’s bambina is she then?”
Johnny shifted himself so he was facing Gyro. “Well, I once knew someone who looked just like her. He had the same hair, the same eyes…” Johnny trailed off, tears welling up in his eyes.
“Who was he, Johnny? I’m on the edge of my seat here!”
“He was… my brother, Nicholas.”
Gyro’s jaw dropped. “Do you really think she’s his daughter? Those features are pretty common.” He replied.
Johnny wiped his eyes with his arm. “Yeah. I really do. I don’t know why he never told me about her, but I think she’s his.”
“Who do you think the mother is?” Gyro asked, chomping at the bit to learn more about Margret.
Johnny thought for a moment before answering. “He was dating this girl, I think her name was Faith Greene-”
“Maybe she was born out of wedlock and that’s why nobody was told!” Gyro interrupted.
“They never did get married…” Johnny noted.
Gyro smacked his fist onto his hand like a judge’s gavel. “I think we’ve cracked the case! We can ask Margret about it in the morning.”
Johnny nodded. “Yeah, good idea.”
Gyro chuckled. “Let’s drink a bit more and then try to get some sleep.”
“Alright.” Johnny snuggled back up to Gyro and poured himself some more wine.

The Stubborn Child Chapter Two
Just as they were about to go search for the little girl, she walked back over to them with a small blue bird in her hands. She looked up at them. “What’s wrong? You look upset.”
Gyro stared at her for a moment in disbelief before shouting, “Where were you?! We were worried about you- wait a minute, what’s your name so I can scold you better?”
The little girl looked confused for a moment, then tentatively responded, “Margret.”
Gyro was about to scold her more thoroughly, but then he noticed the bird. “Um, what’s with the bird?"
"She’s my friend! Her name is Birdie.”
Johnny rolled his eyes. “So you wandered off to get a bird? That’s it? Really?”
“Yeah, so what? Why do you care?” Margret whined at him.
“Because it’s not safe for a little girl to be wandering around on her own.” Gyro explained.
Margret looked down in embarrassment. “You’re right. I’m sorry for running off.”
Johnny put his hands on his hips and looked down at her. “As you should be! Gyro was gonna have a heart attack if we couldn’t find you!”
The freckled girl hugged her bird in fear of what Johnny had suggested. Gyro’s eyes widened and he rushed to comfort her. “Now now, it’s ok. That won’t actually happen, Johnny’s just exaggerating. Thank you for worrying about me though!”
Magret let out a sigh of relief. “Oh...”
Johnny snickered. “Did you actually think I was bein’ serious?! Gyro’s not that old!”
“I’m not old at all! I’m only 24!”
“Yeah, and I’m 19! You’re 5 years older than me! I’m barely even an adult! You have a medical degree! I’ve only had two jobs in my whole life! I’m pretty sure I’ve only told you about one of them… Wait! That doesn’t matter! What I’m tryin’ to say is that you’re old! So there!”
“No! You’re just really young! You know what, I don’t want to argue anymore! Why do we always end up doing this?! Can we please just focus on helping Senorina Margret find her family?”
"Mmmm… No. Mama’s back home." Margret said, looking up at the pair.
"Wait… Does she know you're here?" Gyro and Johnny exclaimed simultaneously.
"Yes and no." She answered.
Gyro shook his head then asked, “What do you mean by that?”
“She knows I left but she doesn't know exactly where I am.”
“How long ago did you leave home?!” Gyro asked.
“I don’t really know. I didn’t bring a calendar.”
"Calendar?!" Johnny chimed in, “How far away do you live?!”
“I don’t know! I’m only 10!" She replied, slightly annoyed.
“Well do you at least know where you’re going?” Gyro inquired.
Magret looked down at her feet as if she was questioning that herself. “Not really…”
“Are you kidding me?!” Johnny interrupted, more annoyed than before.
“No…"
"Wow. What are we gonna do with her?" Johnny asked his racing partner.
"Why are you asking me?"
"Gyroooooo!!"
“Whaaaaaat?"
"What are we going to do with the kid?! She doesn’t know where she’s going! She might get hurt!”
“Since when do you care?”
"Uh… I don’t. It’s just… Uh… You’re annoying!" Johnny stuttered through his words, slightly more annoyed.
Gyro smiled slightly. “Alright, you know what? We have the day off and you seem like you’re getting tired. Why don’t we find a hotel so we can rest for a bit?”
Johnny smiled, his cheeks flushing at the realization that Gyro was sacrificing his day off just for him. “Yeah, good idea Gyro.”
Gyro chuckled, lifted Margret onto his horse, then mounted Valkyrie himself. “Now to find ourselves a place to stay.”

The Stubborn Child Chapter One
It was the 5th stage of the Steel Ball Run Race and our heroes were in Chicago, Illinois. Gyro and Johnny rode their horses down the streets of the city. It was a normal day, Gyro was laughing as Johnny yelled at him. “For the last time, Gyro, I don’t care about your belt!” Johnny complained.
“Ok, ok!” The taller blonde conceded, “I won’t talk about it anymore if you really hate it that much. I thought you’d find it funny but then again, you’ve never really laughed at any of my jokes.”
"Cuz maybe you’re not as funny as you think you are."
Gyro laughed again at the suggestion and was about to change the subject when he noticed a small figure walking towards them. “Hey Johnny, did you see that?”
“You really think I’m gonna fall for that? That’s the oldest trick in the book!” Johnny retorted, still annoyed about the belt joke.
“I’m being serious! Look!” Gyro pointed in the direction of the figure he had seen.
Johnny turned around but nobody was there. “Really? That joke was the worst one you’ve made so far.”
Gyro looked back to where the figure had been and it was, indeed, not there. “It was just there, I swear! Where could it have gone in such a short amount of time?”
Johnny shrugged. “You’re just seein’ things.”
Gyro rubbed his eyes and turned back around so he was facing forward again. “Maybe you’re right. I should get my eyes checked.”
Just as they were preparing to start moving again, a small voice floated up from the ground below. “Daddy?”
Gyro jumped at the sound so hard he fell off of his horse, Valkyrie, and hit the ground with a thump. Once he got his bearings, he sat up and looked around for the source of the voice. He looked in front of Johnny’s horse, Slow Dancer, and saw a little girl with light brown hair that she wore in two long braids standing there. “What the heck?! What’s this kid doin’ here?”
“I told you I saw something, but you didn’t believe me!”
“Well how was I supposed to know there was a kid runnin’ around here?!”
“I did tell you, but you didn’t listen!”
“You didn’t say it was a kid!”
“I didn’t know it was a kid!”
The aforementioned kid stood in front of Slow Dancer, watching the two men bicker like an old married couple. She looked at one, then at the other, and promptly decided that these two must be a package deal in one way or another. She walked over to Gyro, stared at him for a moment, and then asked, quite matter-of-factly, “Daddy?”
Gyro pondered for a moment about the situation he was in, looked up at Johnny, and pleaded, “Can we keep her?”
Johnny wondered if this was another one of Gryo’s jokes. “Are you insane?! We can’t just take a kid off the street! She probably has parents! We’d be arrested for kidnapping! What is wrong with you?!”
The taller man looked at the girl, back at Johnny, and around at their surroundings. “I don’t see anyone else around who looks old enough to be her parent.”
Johnny checked to see if Gyro’s claim was accurate. “Huh. I guess you’re right for once.”
Gyro looked proud for a moment before he processed Johnny’s statement. “That was rude! I’ll have you know that I’m right quite often.”
“Oh yeah? Name one other time you’ve been right.”
“Hmm, let’s see. Maybe when I said I saw something right before this kid called us both daddy?!”
“Will you shut up about that already?”
“I was just answering your question.” Gyro huffed.
“And I told you to shut up!”
The little girl followed the argument like it was a game of ping pong, looking from one man to the other as they yelled at each other. “Wait! Please stop yelling Daddy!” She screamed, not really knowing which one of them she was screaming at anymore.
They both immediately stopped yelling and stared at her in confusion. The only problem was that she wasn’t there anymore. They looked behind them, finding her there. Gyro stood up quickly and walked behind Valkyrie with his hand on her to let her know he was there so she wouldn’t kick, which made it easier to move the girl out of harm’s way. “What do you think you’re doing?! You could have gotten hurt! Horses kick very hard you know.”
"Maybe I just want attention." She stated, looking at the two.
Gyro looked at Johnny and back at the girl. “You know what? I don’t know if I believe that. Can you please tell me the real reason you did that?”
“It's the truth."
“Alright, if you say so. I won’t push it any further.”
"Sure ya won't." Johnny said, rolling his eyes.
“I promise that I won’t pry into this young lady’s life any more than I already have. Besides, it’s not like I would get any answers even if I did.”
"It's true. Everyone in my hometown calls me ‘the stubborn child’.” the girl interrupted.
Gyro smiled at her. “That’s not a bad trait to have. Johnny can be stubborn sometimes but I still like him enough to keep him around.”
“Hey! You like me more than enough to just keep me around and you know it!” Johnny snapped.
"Jealous much?" The girl inquired.
Johnny’s face went beet red. “W-Why would I be jealous of a random little girl? That doesn’t make any sense…”
"I mean I guess but your face says otherwise." She said with a big grin on her face.
Johnny’s face flushed an even deeper shade as Gyro looked up at him questioningly. “Actually, now that she mentions it, Why are you blushing so much?”
Johnny looked away, embarrassed. “N-No reason…”
"Sure…" The girl said, smirking up at the blonde on the horse. Then hears him mumbling poutily, "Shut up. I don't have to listen to a kid."
"I heard that you know," She said, then mumbled, "Mr. Grumpy Pants."
"Why you little-"
“Johnny, leave the young lady alone! She hasn’t done anything to warrant that kind of reaction, now has she?” Gyro said, unknowing of what they mumbled.
"Did ya seriously not hear her, she's standin’ right next to ya for cryin’ out loud!" Johnny said, much more flustered than he’d like to be.
"You started it!" The girl said.
"Johnny, what did you do?" Gyro asked.
" Really!? Are you really going to believe her, just like that? " Johnny replied.
"No. Just sounds like something you would do." Gyro remarked.
"Wow…"
"So… what did you do?" Gyro asked.
Johnny whispered underneath his breath. "I said……"
"What did you say?"
"I…." Johnny said very quietly.
Gyro huffed then asked the girl,  "What did he say?"
"He told me to shut up, so I called him Mr. Grumpy Pants." She answered.
Gyro paused for a second, then said, "Wait… really? That's why you were mad?"
“No! Yes? Maybe…” Johnny’s face flushed bright red again, just as it had started to go back to normal.
"Seriously?" Gyro asked.
"I… where did the kid go?" Johnny asked.
“Oh no! We lost her! What are we going to do!?”
"We didn't lose her. You did" Johnny stated.
“What the heck man?! We were both watching her!”
“Mmhmm. Since when are we responsible for that kid?”
“I mean… Uh… I guess we’re technically not but I still want to make sure she’s ok…”
Johnny was about to yell at Gyro again but then he paused. Gyro looked at him questioningly. “Don’t you have some sort of witty response?”
Johnny looked away. “Nah. I don’t wanna fight anymore. Let’s just look for the kid.”
