real.
Now and Then (the demo and this completed version by Paul) falls in perfectly with the group of songs like Dear Friend, Jealous Guy, [Just Like] Starting Over, and most definitely Here Today, that I can only listen to every once in awhile blue moon, because if I'm not careful playing these songs on repeat, one after the other, I could spiral into a sad ball of grief and palpable secondhand regret and longing from these two fools

can’t believe that John Lennon recorded a demo in his home almost half a century ago and the little cassette tape was saved and then cherished for years and years and years and then eventually people figured out a way to make it into a real song and now I get to listen to that song while I sit at my desk at work.

some of you are so insensible like, wtf?
yeah, paul mccartney is not 52 anymore, he grew older, and it's a BLESSING. because there are only two options: you either grow old or you die. thank GOD Paul is here, now, being able to record this song, unlike John, who we've lost a long time ago. We will never get old man John voice, and that's because he's not here. That sucks. I'd give a lot to have seen John grow older, even if just a little more. See his face change, his music and his voice too. It would have been a blessing.
be fucking greateful that paul and ringo are still here, doing this. rejoice on paul's older raw and real voice. it exists.

Now and Then 2023...
Wow.
I am speechless.
After listening and feeling the raw emotion in John's demo for so many years, hearing Paul harmonizing with him. On John's song TO Paul. I am awestruck. Absolutely awestruck.
The guitar patterns similar to Georges, regardless if he wasn't for this song back in the day, is bone chilling.
I cannot begin to imagine what Paul must have felt hearing the voice of and harmonizing with John's longing voice. Eerily beautiful, I wanted to cry.
As a lifelong Beatles fan, this was by far the best, most moving, pull of the heart strings I could have ever asked for from them.
This truly feels like a full circle moment. Absolutely incredible.
Thank you John for leaving us with this, we miss you down here mate<3 blessed be.

Wow... the complexity of John Lennon and Paul McCartney's otherworldly connection will forever bewilder and amaze me.
“The first thing I did when I got back from the hospital was to ask my assistant to call Paul and Julian and John's Aunt Mimi. I thought that they should know. I'm sure that that remark is not going to make George and Ringo happy, but that was the first instinct I had.”
(Yoko discussing the 3 people she called after John’s death.) “The Last Day In The Life” Newsweek (July 1999)
3 calls were placed; one to John’s son, one to John’s aunt who raised him. the fact that paul was among the first people yoko felt on instinct she needed to call and inform, speaks volumes of the immeasurable bond between john and paul that we’ll never fully know or be able to put into words.

Sorry to ask your opinion again so soon but I really would like your input on this. i saw a video on youtube recently of Paul singing Here Today but before he sang it he said it was originally intended for John meaning now it could be for anyone, I guess. i’m completely baffled as to why he would say that as the lyrics really don’t fit for anyone else. i think this was from 2008. i read a comment that said he was now dedicating it to Linda and Geo as well but I didn’t hear him say that in the video. Either way, I still think that’s really shitty to make it blatantly obvious that is no longer solely intended for John. Btw, the video is from a performance at Amoeba in L.A.-Rings was also in the audience. Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.😎
Hi again!
Here Today has always been one of my favorites... It never fails to leave me teary eyed. Specifically for the meaning behind it, which is that it was written FOR John.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe Paul wrote Here Today shortly after John’s passing, as a way to process it all, and get across those words never said, the words he could only communicate in the best way he knew how to, through his music. The song was a letter to John, no one else, but John.
However, as the years went by, and Paul lost more loved ones, yes, I do believe he could dedicate the song to more than one person, because truthfully, the lyrics still stand for any lost loved one that things were left “unfinished” with... Such a beautiful piece, filled with so much emotion. It’s incredible truly, especially coming from Paul who we never have gotten much from, vulnerability wise. He always has the walls up between his true feelings and the public, but not in this case, this song is so raw and filled with the pain and bittersweet memories of the most epic love story /connection of his life. A story of two lads from Liverpool that made history together, only to have fate end their story short. There are really no words to describe the depth of the connection those two shared...
So in the end, Here Today will always be to me, Paul’s love letter to his beloved twin flame, John Lennon.
Here Today, is and always has been, John’s song <3

I'd like to ask two questions. Don't you think this narrative of Yoko abusing and controlling John Lennon is very problematic? Guarding her hatred for her since everyone has the right to like or dislike a person, but this narrative was invented by men who are mostly sexist, racist and freeloaders.
Second: there are so many "sources" about how Yoko was abusive and controlling with John and there are a thousand other sources saying that John was also controlling and even prevented Yoko from visiting Kyoko because he couldn't deal with Tony, John admitted and not to mention the physical and emotional abuse that John did against every woman he dated, Why are Yoko's actions worse than John's? don't you think it's problematic to have such a misogynistic and racist idea in 2022?
This is just my personal belief, nothing to do with race or misogony...
Obviously John was not perfect, but from the sources I have seen, my opinion of Yoko is strong. I am aware that she has done some good, and played a huge role in her and John's peace movement of the late 60′s, as well as encouraging him to branch out artistically, but then again she also is a major play in how horrible he was doing in the 70's.  She controlled every aspect of his life, and she was well aware of the power she held over him. Then with this knowledge did nothing to help him, only control and take from him to benefit her.
Even after his death, she went against his wishes of being buried at home, and had him cremated. As well as completely stole from Julian almost all his rights to his father's estate. It is disgusting to me how one could be so cold.
Yes, their relationship was incredibly toxic on both ends, but for me, Yoko is not someone I support, nor will ever. For me she played a major role in John's poor mental state towards the end, not saying it was all her fault again, but she was the one closest to him and she did nothing to aid him to heal and come out of whatever funk he was in. Then just as he was started to come out of it, and get back to himself, and his music, he was gone... She used him in life and death, and that absolutely sickens me.
So I hear where you are coming from, but from the way I see it, and with all the information we have today, Yoko Ono is not someone who's name we should still be defending in 2022.

I’ve been trying to find confirmation of this but I haven’t ever been able to. Was Paul actually hurt when John turned him away when he showed up at fhe Dakota with a guitar? i can’t tell sometimes what’s fanfiction or real life. Thanks.
We will never know the full truth to this, I have heard many sides...
One being Paul went to check on him, seeing as John "disappeared" from public eye, wouldn't take any phone calls, and never left the walls of the Dakota. Many of John's friend were incredibly concerned for him and curious as to why he was "wasting his talent away" in the prison of Yoko Ono. That is a strong statement I am aware, however I do believe the story of Yoko mentally abusing him, and controlling every aspect of his life, to the point he became her pet that she took endless money from. John as we know was not the strongest mentally, and Yoko knew that, she knew he needed Paul, and with that knowledge she turned John further against him, blocking all his calls, and did nothing to help John come out of his depressive state...
Another side, John’s side, is that Paul showing up unannounced really flustered him seeing that he had a family and baby to take care of, and dilly dally playing around on guitars just was not possible anymore. I believe he said something along the lines of “this isn’t liverpool anymore”, meaning that they weren’t kids who could show up out of the blue and play any longer... Though I see John’s point, I feel it goes much deeper than this. I feel the John Lennon we all know and love would jump at the opportunity to play with his one time bestfriend, I feel that whoever answered the door that day, was not the John Paul has known and loved for oh so many years. He was simply not himself, and Paul knew that...
I am sure Paul was aware of how far John was gone mentally, and when he was turned away by him, It had to have been hard... However Paul knew John, better than anyone else had or ever will, he had to have known that Johnny was not doing well and that being turned down was just a result of just that. I hurt for John during those years living in the Dakota, he was not well, and anyone that actually knew him could tell you that, but the only person who had full access to him was Yoko. The control she had was disgusting, and I can only wish John had been strong enough to stand up to her and take his life in his own hands. A part of him had to have yearned to play with Paul again that day, just like the old days, just like their days in Paul's bedroom back in Liverpool... In a perfect world some would say...
So yes, I do think Paul was hurt, obviously being turned away by the person that once knew your every move and thought, and you him, would feel like a knife through the heart... but again there had to have been some understanding, and sadness for John on Paul's end... John was not the John he knew and loved, and Paul must have seen that.
I apologize for the lengthy answer to such a simple question, this topic just opens the door to many happenings at the time... I can only wish they got to do that one more studio session that was planned before Johnny passed... in another lifetime my friends<3

Do you think Paul remembers John? i mean really remembers him? The Beatles must seem like another life to him. Your thoughts? Thanks.
In shorter words, yes.
I 1000% believe Paul remembers John, and that at his older age, the memories and playbacks of his surreal life are all hitting now, which would equal Johnny...
Seeing Paul mention and include John more heavily in his shows really warms my heart, now that he has done it all, and life is cooling down, he can really take a step back and see his life and everyone in it for how it and they truly were. I'm wondering if it is all hitting now how special that connection with John really was... because it was just that, special.
I mean we can even look back through the years and remember how Paul would end up creating painting of John, without intending to, it would just happen... That is to me what real love is, and something like that can never be forgotten.
The bond and John Lennon and Paul McCartney will forever be the greatest love story (platonic) of the 20th century... and for me personally, the greatest love story in musical history. That connection is otherworldly and remains unmatched to this day.

I really would like your opinion on this. Paul has introduced Here Today differently every time on the Got Back tour. i’m starting to truly think that he wants to say something more but he can’t bring himself to. What are your thoughts?
Hello again!
This is very interesting to me for many reasons...
Though mainly, I wish I could get into the head of Paul McCartney after seeing the Get Back doc for the first time... Seeing John so young, so alive, all the while at the same time watching first hand their beautiful special friendship slip through their fingers. It must have been heartbreaking, having to go through it all again, to see their connection from an outside perspective, to see what WE all see them as...
With this being said, I really think the doc may have opened Paul’s eyes, yet again, to how much he truly misses and loved Johnny, hence making each performance of Here Today special and unique, as an attempt to give John the proper recognition he endlessly deserves. Paul loved John. Paul loves John and always will. They were soul mates, and whatever feuds they had, age, time, etc. will never change the fact that John will always be with Paul, in life and death...
*Side note: Paul singing with John for I’ve Got A Feeling on the tour made me so emotional I do not know how I finished the song... God do I miss them together, and here we all are again, reliving the loss of McLennon, yet again, in 2022:’)
