They are said to bring prosperity to anyone who can find them all - I didn't, but I definitely found the one, that foretold my evening plans 😅🍶 When you visit Haguro make sure to find all of the figures, discover the hidden torii gates, listen to the birds singing and trees rustling and the most important - simply enjoy your time! ENG/PL One of my favourite pictures from 芝桜 place 😉 I love how the way this yellow sonchus stands out in the field full of violet moss phlox. For me it has such a deep meaning, even if it's just a flower. Do what you want to do, don't be afraid to be different than the rest surrounding you!👊💜💛 Little bit of throwback, because now we are enjoying Iwate prefecture during the Golden Week, and since I didn't bring my laptop, I will edit all photos after we come back to Sendai😅 So enjoy this, hopefully, sunny day and see you soon! Niby tylko kwiatki, ale dla mnie mają jednak głębsze przesłanie. Ten żółty mleczyk (ciekawe czy ostatni w tym sezonie 😉) tak cudownie wyróżnia się pośród fioletowych kwiatów, jakby mówił "nie przejmuj się że jesteś inny/a, że się wyróżniasz! To dobrze! Rób, co tylko chcesz i bądź z tego dumny/a!"👊💜💛 Wrzucam taką wspominkę fotograficzną, ponieważ obecnie cieszymy się długim majowym weekendem (oczywiście deszczowym) w prefekturze Iwate. After our long and quite intense journey we are finally reaching the top! Through centuries-old cedars we can see another torii gate, this time bigger and offering quite a nice view - Haguro-san Shrine, the only of the three Dewa Sanzan shrines which is open year round. Symbolizing birth, Haguro-san is usually the first shrine visited by pilgrims. Haguro-san's main shrine holds the deities from all three Dewa Sanzan shrines - that's why it's the most important of the three. The main building called 三神合祭殿 (Sanjin Gosaiden), features the thickest thatched roof in Japan, over two meters thick. Unfortunately, we couldn't admire it in full, as the Shrine was undergoing some renovation works 😔 so no photos, because everything was covered in white sheets. There's also Dewa Sanzan Historical Museum offering you some information (in Japanese) about shrines together with art and artifacts. ........................................................... Nareszcie, po długiej i całkiem intensywnej wspinaczce po ponad 2000 schodach osiągamy nasz cel i docieramy przed bramę torii prowadząca do świątyni Haguro-san! Jest to najważniejsza z grupy trzech świątyń, głównie dlatego, że czczone są w niej wszystkie trzy bóstwa. Jest ona często początkiem pielgrzymki, ponieważ symbolizuje narodziny, nowy początek. Plus, jako jedyna jest otwarta przez cały rok, więc możemy ja odwiedzać kiedy tylko mamy na to ochotę 😊 Po przekroczeniu bramy w oczy rzuca się najgrubszy dach kryty strzechą w Japonii, mający ponad 2 metry 😳 grubości! Niestety, nie mogliśmy podziwiać go w całej okazałości, ze względu na prace remontowe trwające wtedy na terenie świątyni 😔 więc niestety nie mam zdjęć, bo wszystko pokrywały rusztowania. Możecie również odwiedzić Muzeum Historii Dewa Sanzan, gdzie znajdziecie informacje (po japońsku) o świątyniach oraz dzieła sztuki i artefakty. Did you know that sakura grows not only on trees?🤯 This one here is called 芝桜 (Shibazakura), which can be loosely translated to "grass sakura" - and that is exactly what you see😉 A sea of bright, pink flowers, moved by green waves of grass, scattering the sunlight🥰 Just a perfect view, that's all that it is. And the best thing is, that I could enjoy it with one of my favourite people and the best travel companion in one❤ so here you have, our smiling faces, hopefully you will smile too😊 ........................................................... ENG/PL Another batch of photos from Haguro 🥰 I guess it's safe to say that I am in love with this place. But when you look at those trees, can you even wonder why? As I told you before, the oldest Grandpa Cedar is over 1000 years old. Other trees, lining the route are also quite impressive, from 350 to 500 years old!😱 Being surrounded by them, makes you feel so small... but it also helps you appreciate your surrounding more and enjoy connecting with nature. We will soon reach the top of the mountain, have you enjoy the travel so far? Also, can you find my husband?😉 I think he wanted to leave me in that forest, but I wouldn't let him 😅 ........................................................... Moi drodzy, kolejna seria zdjęć z Haguro🥰 serio, zakochałam się w tym miejscu i chyba nie ma się nawet czemu dziwić 😉 Jak wspominałam we wcześniejszym poście, najstarszy cedr ma około 1000 lat, ale pozostałe nie są gorsze. Cedry rosnące wzdłuż trasy mają od 350 do 500 lat!😱 Otoczona przez takie cuda natury czuję się bardzo malutka i nieważna... ENG/PL Sakura season is over, but it doesn't mean that we cannot extend it and enjoy it for just a little bit longer 😉 It's one of my favourite shots, even though I'm not sure what the author of this composition had in mind 🤔 any ideas? Yesterday I went for a walk to check if 藤花 (Fuji Flowers) are blooming already in Sendai, but couldn't find anything😔 guess we will have to wait a little bit longer. But at least there is something I can wait for and be excited for it😁 what about you? What can't you wait for? And I discovered a nice morning market, with lots of fresh goods and food stalls🤤 oh, and the second-hand shop! I count it as a win❤ .................................................... Chasing down sakura blooming spots we came across 鶴ヶ城. 鶴ヶ城 (Tsuruga Castle) is a quite well known spot in Aizuwakamatsu City, in Fukushima prefecture. And once we found out it's a great cherry blossom viewing spot, we knew we had to see it. And let me tell you this...that place did not disappoint! Cherry trees cover the whole are of the surrounding Tsuruga Castle Park. The castle was built in 1384 and changed the owners many times, between different rulers of the Aizu region. It was later destroyed after the Boshin War in 1868 and rebuilt in 1960s. What is interesting about the reconstruction process is the fact that the color of the roof tiles was changed back from grey to original red, which is a unique color among Japanese castles. You can enter the castle and read all about its history in the 3-floor museum, and then enjoy the amazing view from the top floor😍 After that you can visit Rinkaku Teahouse to enjoy a cup of matcha together with handmade wagashi 🥰 One of the best trips so far! ........................................................... Ścigając się z czasem i z przekwitającymi drzewami wiśni trafiliśmy na informację o zamku Tsuruga. Miejsce jest całkiem znanym punktem w mieście Aizuwakamtsu, w prefekturze Fukushima. Zatem kiedy okazało się, że słynie właśnie z sakury, no cóż, nie mieliśmy innej opcji i musieliśmy się tam wybrać. WARTO BYŁO😍 Zamek został zbudowany w 1384, zniszczony w 1868 w trakcie Restauracji Meiji. W tzw. międzyczasie zmieniał właścicieli kilka razy i ostatecznie został odbudowany w latach 60. XX wieku. Co ciekawe, w trakcie renowacji zdecydowano się na przywrócenie oryginalnego czerwonego koloru dachówek, co jest dość wyjątkową cechą japońskich zamków. Odwiedzając zamek możemy też cieszyć się świetną lekcją historii, wystarczy że odwiedzimy muzeum znajdujące się na aż 3 piętrach! Na najwyższym piętrze możemy za to napawać się widokiem cudownej panoramy miasta i terenów przyzamkowych😍 A kiedy przyjdzie nam ochota na chwilkę relaksu, warto napić się zielonej herbaty i skosztować japońskich słodyczy w przyzamkowej herbaciarni "Rinkaku" 🥰 Jedna z najlepszych wycieczek do tej pory! Passing by the Five-storied Pagoda, you will find the Ichi-no-saka slope. There are three major slopes and yes, you guessed it right, the second slope is called Ni-no-saka, and the third one San-no-saka 😉 All along the stone stairway up Mt. Haguro you will find the Massha shrines, each dedicated to a different Shinto god. The Massha shrines originally each housed a Buddha, which was appropriated to their Shinto God equivalent. Changes took place after the Meiji Restoration and Mt. Haguro becoming Shinto mountain. At the exact middle point of the approach, you’ll find the Ninosaka Chaya teahouse, a type of café that has been in Japan since ancient times. Teahouses are very often located on such routes to help travelers get their strength back, offering tea and sweets. Most popular are so called chikara-mochi (strength-giving rice cakes), as it is said you would would gain strength after eating these sweets made of rice. Near the summit you’ll find Hagurosan Saikan, the Mount Haguro purification building where you can taste traditional Buddhist vegetarian dishes that monks in training eat. Unfortunately, neither teahouse nor Hagurosan Saikan were open during our visit, but I still hope to be someday able to enjoy all the riches Haguro offers😍 ........................................................... ENG/PL I’m sure you couldn’t wait until I post another list of Sakura vocabulary! 😉 So without further ado, here it is: 花は桜木、人は武士 - hana wa sakuragi, hito wa bushi – the best flowers are the cherry blossoms, the best individuals are the samurai; as the cherry blossom is first among flowers, so is the warrior first among men. 花より団子- hana yori dango – literally, sweets over flowers. Some people just want to party, you know? ブルーシート – Buruu sheeto- the traditional picnic blanket in Japan is a blue plastic mat that Hanami diehards spread even before dawn to hold the perfect spot. 花見団子 – Hanami Dango - are sweet bites made with rice flour, usually put on a skewer and of three colors, natural white, green and pink. 夜桜 – Yozakura - night viewing of cherry blossoms. Often parks organise special lighting during Hanami evenings. 満開 – Mankai - the moment of full bloom, usually lasts about one week depending on the type of sakura tree. 開花予想- Kaikayosou - a specific word that means forecast of flowering time. 桜切る馬鹿梅切らぬ馬鹿- Sakura kiru baka, ume kiranu baka- The fools who cut cherry trees, the fools who don’t cut plum trees - This proverb originated because cherry blossom trees can easily rot from branches being cut off or broken off. Plum trees on the other hand grow thick and sturdy, and they actually benefit from excess branches being cut off. 満開 – mankai - Full bloom 五分咲き- gobuzaki - Half bloom 初桜 - Hatsuzakura - the name for first cherry blossom of the year. 桜人 – sakurabito - a person who is a die-hard fan of sakura and hanami celebration. 朝桜- asazakura - morning sakura; it’s when the cherry blossom intertwined with morning dew gives a magnifying sight to the sakura admirers. 桜狩り- sakuragari- sakura hunting 姥桜- ubazakura - Old-Woman Sakura - used as a metaphor for a woman who, despite passing her youth, is still beautiful and alluring. 千本桜 – senbonzakura – thousand cherry trees – no need to explain this one right? ENG/PL When you visit Mt. Haguro there is no chance you will miss the oldests Five-storied Pagoda in all of Tohoku. When Haguro Town was amalgamated into Tsuruoka in 2005, the city became one of the only municipalites in Japan, let alone the world, to possess two Five-storied Pagodas, the other located at Zenpoji. You will see it when you pass the Grandpa Cedar Tree, called Jijisugi,1000 year old and 43-meter high, the oldest cedar tree in the forest surrounding Mt. Haguro. Pagoda was originally constructed during the Heian Period (794-1185), and the current structure is believed to have been rebuilt in 1372. Some interesting info about pagoda: ✔ it preserves the original natural colour of the wood in what is called Shirakizukuri (bare wood construction) ✔ no nails were used in its construction ✔ each roof has been built in an ancient Japanese style called Kokerabuki (a roof covering made with a layer of thin wooden shingles made of cypress) ✔ unlike other pagodas found in Japan each roof is the same size (this way only the top roof has to counteract the weight of the snow, which sometimes can accumulate even up to 3 meters!) ✔ people from the province would for centuries take turns climbing the pagoda and clearing the snow from the roof ✔ pagoda is 29.9 meters high ✔ it has an earthquake dampening system inside, it's in a form of a huge swinging pendulum counteracting shakes and swaying to prevent the tower from collapsing ✔ it was designated as a National Treasure in 1966 Quite interesting story for a building in the deep forest, don't you think? I am always impressed by such news about something that many people rarely pay attention to. The history and nature are amazing!❤💚 ........................................................... ENG/PL Another sakura photo, another sakura story 😊 We all know sakura looks amazing and just looking at the trees makes you feel as if you travelled to some other, ethereal world you don’t want to leave… There is a lot of proverbs and vocabulary used when talking about sakura, so let’s check some of them! 花見 – hanami – flower viewing; seems quite obvious and definitely wouldn’t like to miss it on this list 😉 桜前線 – sakura zensen – sakura forecast – sakura starts blooming and if you want to know where would be the next great spot and how much time you have left, you check the forecast 花霞 – hanagasumi - this is the Japanese word used to describe the scene with many blossoms - literally translated as the “flower haze”, often used when many sakura trees grow close to each other 桜吹雪 – hanafubuki - my personal favourite! It means “sakura snowstorm”. Cherry blossom petals often dance in the wind, which can look like a storm of pink and white flowers! Amazing view! 花の雨 – hana no ame – flower rain. Haven’t seen it yet, but it is a phrase to describe the rain falling on the cherry blossoms, I can only imagine how amazing it looks! <3 花明かり – hana akari - flower lights. When the cherry blossom is in full bloom, the vivid color makes the darkness look much brighter than normal 三日見ぬ間の桜 – mikka minuma no sakura - a highly descriptive and evocative word in Japanese meaning “change happening very suddenly and intensely” , much like the cherry blossoms that go from full bloom to being scattered in just a short space of time 葉桜 – hazakura – cherry tree leaves; once the flower blossom has fallen, small leaves start to appear on the trees, a sign the summer will soon be on the way! ENG/PL Continuing our trip to Haguro 😊 Once you reach the bottom of the stairs, you will soon see a little red bridge and hear the soothing sound of the waterfall. That's the Haraigawa River, flowing through the ancient forest. In the past, women were not allowed to pass the river, as it was seen to be too dangerous, so they prayed at the Shirayama Shrine, located on the right. The situation changed after the Meiji Restoration. The waterfall that joins the Haraigawa River was diverted by monks from a river 8 km away in the 1600s. The red Shinkyo Bridge was built in 1975, allowing everyone to finally safely cross the river. That day river was quiet and even welcoming, as if she wanted more people to see and understand its beauty and connect with nature... ........................................................... Wracamy do Haguro - kiedy już zejdziemy po schodach, napotykamy na swojej drodze niewielki most. Do naszych uszu dociera dźwięk wody z pobliskiego wodospadu, łagodny, a jednocześnie pełen pasji. Rzeka, którą przekraczamy to Haraigawa. W przeszłości kobiety nie mogły przez nią przechodzić, uważano to za zbyt niebezpieczne. Wszystko zmieniło się po Restauracji Meiji w 1868 roku, kiedy to Haguro została górą Shinto. Gdzieś około 1600 roku mnisi połączyli rzekę Haraigawa z inna rzeką, odległą o ok. 8km tworząc wodospad, którego dźwięk wita nas na początku naszej krótkiej wspinaczki. Charakterystyczny czerwony most, zwany mostem Shinkyo został wybudowany w w 1975, kończąc tym samym wszelkie zmartwienia dotyczące przeprawy przez rzekę. ENG/PL Did you know that 花見 (Hanami) was not always associated with cherry blossom viewing? Back in Nara period it was all about 梅 (ume) - plums! They start blooming even sooner than cherry trees, and are equally beautiful, so no wonder people would admire plum trees. When and why did it change? Well, it's all Emperor Saga's fault 😉 he held the first sakura-viewing party, together with food, drinks, music and writing poems. He did it, because he was impressed by a particular tree at Jishu Shrine, currently a part of Kiyomizu Temple complex. From 831 cherry blossom viewing has become a regular event at the imperial court. Later, the term 花見 was used in the Tale of Genji and since that time it became analogous to cherry blossom viewing. More sakura stories coming soon, so make sure not to miss them!😊🌸 ......................................................... W 花見 (hanami) nie zawsze chodziło o podziwianie kwiatów wiśni. W okresie Nara wszyscy skupiali się na kwiatach śliwy! Nie ma się co dziwić. Są równie piękne jak wiśnia, a do tego kwitną trochę szybciej😊 Samo złożenie oznacza dosłownie "podziwianie kwiatów", więc jak widzicie, nie ma tu nic o konkretnym typie😉 Wszystko zmieniło się za sprawą Cesarza Sagi, który zachwycony jednym szczególnym drzewem w świątyni Jishu postanowił zorganizować wypasione podziwianie sakur dla całego dworu - było jedzenie, picie, muzyka, a nawet układanie poematów. Od 831 roku podziwianie sakur stało się regularnym wydarzeniem na dworze, a kiedy terminu 花見 użyto w Opowieści o Księciu Genjim, był już on jednoznaczny z podziwianiem kwiatów wiśni. ENG/PL You say "just normal stairs...", I say "stairs with three Michellin Green Guide stars" 😱😍 Once we pass the gate, we find ourselves in a completely different world, mysterious, magical, a little bit scary, a little bit fascinating... And those stairs lead your way into that world, so you better follow them and don't even try to fight. The history of 石段 (Ishidan, stone stairway) began in the 17th century, when the political chief priest called Ten'yu built stone steps for 1.2 km between Onaobi Shrine and Hachiman Shrine. The funny thing is that not only donations from followers and visitors but also penalty charges from those who did not follow the rules covered the construction expenses😅 Currently, the stairway stretches to 1.7 km and consists of 2446 stone steps! Reaching the top feels great, but what feels even greater is the way up there, being surrounded with all that amazing nature, feeling small and tiny in front of its magnificence... ...................................................... Kiedy już przekroczymy próg bramy znajdujemy się nagle w zupełnie innym świecie. Trochę tak, jakbyśmy weszli przez drzwi w szafie do Narnii - wszystko dookoła się zmienia, jest bardziej magicznie, tajemniczo, trochę przerażająco, ale też trochę niesamowicie... schody prowadzą nas coraz głębiej, a jedyne co możemy zrobić, to poddać się i podążać wskazaną ścieżką... Co do samych schodów, to zostały one zbudowane w XVII wieku, kiedy jeden z ważniejszych kapłanów w tym rejonie postanowił wybudować drogę między świątynią Onaobi a świątynia Hachimana. Wtedy droga była długa na "zaledwie" 1.2km. Koszt budowy pokryty został z datków wiernych i odwiedzających, ale również z kar dla osób, które nie stosowały się do zasad 😅 Obecnie, ścieżka jest długa na 1.7km i składa się z 2446 schodów! Oczywiście, dotarcie na szczyt to jak zawsze niesamowite uczucie, ale jeszcze lepsze uczucie daje nam sama droga w otoczeniu wspaniałej natury. ENG/PL Ok, so I thought I should probably start trying out some new things 😅 As you know, most of my feed are travel pictures and stories connected to those travels. But! Living in Japan is not only travelling... wait, what?? 🧐🤯 So I thought that maybe changing my long posts from already dead blog (not gonna lie, it wasn't meant to be😅) to some short "how to" posts here on Insta will be a good idea - I will have to do something new, leave my comfort zone, and you will get useful info in an easy to understand way😊 What do you think? ENG/PL Finally! 😍🌸 Sakura started blooming in Sendai! Woohoo! I went for a little sakura hunting trip today and visited a place recommended to me by my student - DID NOT DISAPPOINT! Took so many photos that I could spam you with sakura photos everyday for at least next 4 months 😅 But let me dose you this pleasure, I still have "Haguro Story" to tell 😉 so from now on, there will be two type of posts, one from Haguro and one Sakura spam, hope you will enjoy it as much as I do! And of course, I will try to find some interesting cherry blossom stories, after all, I am your storyteller 😁 .................................................... Nareszcie! W końcu wiosna zawitała do Sendai, wiśnie zaczęły kwitnąć i wszystko dookoła jest cudownie biało-różowe🥰 Dzisiaj odwiedziłam "top spot" w Sendai jeśli chodzi o podziwianie wiśni. A właściwie jeden z nich. Poleciła mi to miejsce moja studentka i powiem tylko tyle, TO MIEJSCE WYMIATA! Zdjęć sakury mam na najbliższe 4 miesiące, a to dopiero początek, więc spam będzie, nie macie się co martwić 😉 ale żeby nie było zbyt monotematycznie, to oprócz sakurowego spamu będziemy jeszcze dalej zwiedzać Haguro. Z tego miejsca też mam ładne zdjęcia, no i mnóstwo historyjek!
