The Unfinished War - Chapter 1
"Reggie! You're needed to the commander's office. He has a guest for you." Seargent Grieves barks at the lowly soldier.
Reggie straightens up his uniform and takes off to his superior. He had just finished breakfast and was on his way to the firing range when he recieved a summons to Commander Levi's office.
Reggie looks around the courtyard of the old naval fortress he passes through. Several ships are docked neatly along the pier. Soldiers tread through the mud as they perform their duties and engineers carry parts to and from their ships. On the north end, a firing range bustles with soldiers trying to sharpen their aim as the sounds of gunfire ring through the air. As he makes his way up the stairs to the Main Hall, Reggie is stopped by his good friend, Jodie.
"I heard the commander wanted to talk with you. Do you suppose he's angry?" She asks with a slow and gentle voice.
Jodie and Reggie met during a long day of training some time back and have been good friends since. Reggie often gets the feeling there's more to it than that, but waives it off as mere superstition. To Jodie, this feeling is something very real.
"I dont suppose he is. All I'm told is that there's a guest waiting for me." He responds with apathy.
"Oh, well, either way, make sure not to be late for target practice again. I'll know if you are." She tells him in a firm but friendly tone.
"Yes, ma'am. I will be there on time." He says sarcastically.
Reggie continues into the Main Hall. After climbing several flights of stairs, Reggie finally finds a door with the inscription "Commander Z. Levi" written on a silver plaque. He knocks quickly and awaits a response.
"Enter!" An older voice calls from inside.
Reggie slowly swings the door open to find Commander Zachary Levi sitting at his desk buried in paperwork. The commander's office is lined with bookshelves save for a large window giving an aerial view of Fort Pampus and the IJmeer Sea. The cold, grey walls are just as boring as the cloudy, November sky. Pacing along the bookshelves, a woman with her head tilted sideways is reading the book titles off to herself. She doesn't seem to notice Reggie's entrance, but that not why he's here.
"You needed me, sir?" Reggie asks standing at attention and holding a salute.
"Yes. I did. Relax, soldier. I have a very special assignment for you. You are to go with our guest here to the Isle of Scilly."
"Scilly, sir?" Reggie knows his place is to serve and he's proud to do just that, but he still has his doubts. "The heartland of our enemies?"
"Yes. Scilly. Chelsea, why don't you go ahead and introduce yourself." The commander asks respectfully.
The title-reading woman quickly turns around with her eyes wide open. She smiles widely and inhales deeply before speaking, "Watch this." She let's out the rest of her breath and relaxes her eyes. Chelsea turns around to face the shelves then turns her neck a full 250°, giving Reggie and the Commander both quite a shock.
"Thats... impressive?" Reggie speaks with uncertainty and surprise.
Chelsea turns her head back into place and giggles to herself while facing the bookshelf.
"Thank you. It took too long to be able to do that." She says proudly and turns to face the soldiers. "Anyways, my name is Chelsea and I am a mercinary for hire. I've been around for a while. Your Commander here wants me to deal with a little problem you guys have been dealing with for a while now. And you, my new friend, are to help me out."
"Understood." Reggie speaks with uncertainty and a pinch of annoyance.
The commander chimes in with his usual commanding voice. "Now that that's out of the way. The task we have for you is simple. Keep. Chelsea. Safe. She holds a long list of accomplishments in her career and it would be a shame to see her lost to the Scilians. Chelsea, you should find the lieutenant. He can get you maps and supplies for your mission."
"Oh, how very generous, Levi. I'll let him know you sent me." Chelsea responds before hopping out the door.
"Strange woman, sir. Are you sure she needs protection? She seems... capable... on her own." Reggie asks.
"In truth, she doesn't need protection. We need her to believe that your task is her protection. What you are really doing is keeping her focused." The commander tells him in a hushed tone. "Our sources tell me she is very capable of finishing her task, but that's if she can focus on it. We need you to make sure she eliminates General Noah of the Scilian Isles."
"Understood, sir. I will try my best." Reggie responds with a more confident voice. "What should I do if she gets off track?"
"Whatever it takes to put her back on it, soldier. Do not fail us, or who knows what might happen." Commander Levi responds with a threatening tone.
"Yes, sir. I understand, sir. Is there anything else?" Reggie asks feeling the threat.
"Yes. Until the mission is complete, you take orders from only one person. That mercinary. The lieutenants and officers will be made aware of this soon. But do not abuse this power. You have a very rare opportunity. I would make the best of it if I were in your shoes." Levi tells him.
Reggie nods in understanding and the commander speaks a final time. "Now, you are dismissed. Don't let us down. That girl is our best hope at winning this war."
Reggie nods again and makes his way outside. Back down the stairwell he travels. In the main hall, Chelsea has begun looking over the quartermaster's inventory. Reggie watches her and can't help but wonder what her plan is. Such a large task to take out General Noah, Chelsea surely has a plan already. He straightens himself again and approaches her.
"Alright, partner. What's out first step?" He asks.
She looks to him with dead serious eyes. "Usually the left foot." She says and goes back to perusing the quartermaster's weapons.
Reggie looks at her quizzically and asks, "Are you alright? You weren't like this a few moments ago."
"I'm fine." She replies with a fast and content voice. "You should gear up while you can."
"Alright. But what are we gearing up for? What is the plan?" He says unsure.
"Plan? Oh.... I dont know. I'm not good at plans." She says totally calm while arming herself with a sabre and a pistol.
"What do you mean you dont have a plan? We're hunting General Noah. We have to plan our movements if we even think we can get close to him." Reggie says feeling the annoyance returning.
Chelsea scowls at Reggie and begins trekking out through the large doors to the courtyard. Reggie lets out a groan and follows her outside forgetting to collect his own weapons. The sun is reaching it's midday stance and Reggie can see Jodie patiently waiting by the firing range. He hurries to talk to her before he loses Chelsea.
"Hey, I'm gonna be out for a while. The commander needs me for a special mission." He tells Jodie who is quietly sitting on a barrel with her rifle.
Her face turns to reflect concern. "How long is a while? Are you leaving? Where are you going?" She asks slowly.
"I dont know when I'll be back, but yes, I am leaving. I'm not sure where I'm going, but I won't be long." He says reassuringly.
"Oh, alright. Be safe. Whatever you're doing and good luck." She says putting away her concerned attitude.
"Thanks. Something tells me I'll need it." He says before departing to catch up with Chelsea.
