Here’s why I don’t think the “discourse” surrounding Mary is misogynistic: the criticism is of her behavior, specifically toward Freddie’s Garden Lodge family in the wake of his death, and of the homophobic things she’s said in the press. That’s it. I’ve been following this fandom for almost three years, however marginally, so I doubt what I say carried any weight here, but I’m familiar with what goes on here. It’s pretty civil. I don’t know what goes on in other Queen fandoms on other platforms because I’m not there. But I have been on fan forums for other bands, the old-school kind that are almost entirely made up of middle-aged white men, and if you want to see misogyny, it’s blatant. And of course I’m not saying that women are immune to misogyny, but I also don’t like putting the onus on women with a patronizing “we should know better.”

in response to the previous anon asking about the tennis photo, i'm not 100% sure that is jim. it's also possible that it is is tony pike. it's really hard to tell bcuz tony pike had dark hair and a moustache and the photo quality isn't great. not trying to rain on anyone's parade, just saying.

This was Tony Pike that day. So unless he took off the chain he’s wearing, I think the person in the photo below was Jim. The chest hair are also kinda indicative.

What are some real examples of misogyny in the queen fandom (not the fake stuff about Mary 😂)

There's a minority of fans who dislike the band's wives and girlfriends for really no other reason than being jealous that they got to be with the guys and they didn't, and I feel pretty confident in saying that because, aside from Mary who has a documented history of terrible statements and actions both from firsthand accounts and her own numerous interviews, we hardly know anything about the personalities of the other female partners, so what reason could there possibly be to hate these strangers other than jealousy? I can't think of any.

An exception to this is Anita, who is a public figure and has given interviews over the years, so we actually do know a bit about what she's like as a person. However, misogyny plays a role in hate against her, as well. People hate her because her relationship with Brian began as an affair. I've previously spoken about how Brian's first marriage was already falling apart in 1986 and would've ended anyway without Anita, and that their relationship seemed to be more complicated than people acknowledge, but setting all of that aside, it's sexist to hate Anita for the affair and not Brian. It's a double standard. If you're going to label people as scum for cheating, be consistent. I completely understand why infidelity makes people uncomfortable and why they don't want to think about their fave engaging in it, but placing all of the blame on the woman in order to ignore the sins of the man for the sake of comfort is not the answer. It takes two to tango. Anita wasn't some evil seductress who led Brian astray, Brian was a man in an unhappy marriage who wanted to have his cake and eat it, too, instead of confronting his marital issues and dealing with the consequences of that, and when he couldn't have it both ways, he fell apart (cue "Too Much Love Will Kill You").

I also think there's misogyny in the larger classic rock fandom as a whole with people excusing groupie culture so they don't have to criticize their faves for treating random women as nothing but objects. "It was empowering for women to be treated as sex objects, actually!!!" yeah miss me with that fucking brain worms. Adults consenting to casual sex is fine but it's dishonest to pretend as if rock stars and their sleazy groupies didn't/don't treat female groupies as breathing sex dolls, and glamorizing a lifestyle of being used by men to young women (and even minors in some cases!!) is bad.

That's the misogyny in the fandom. I'd be remiss not to mention the misogyny in the band itself in the form of stories from the roadies (especially in Ratty's book), some eye-roll-inducing statements from the band members at certain points over the years (though tbh not as much as you'd expect from men in the 70s-80s, because the bar is so abysmally low for men), and like, the entirety of the music video for "Bicycle Race" and subsequent promo poster or whatever the fuck it was from it. That was just gross objectification. At least Brian said attitudes change and he didn't think the video was funny anymore.
