♡ As children, Vanya knew she had feelings for Five, but assumed Five didn’t, or wouldn’t, reciprocate those feelings. Why would someone so amazing want to be with someone who’s ordinary? Five on the other hand wasn’t at a point in his life yet to give stuff like feelings and relationships any thought. He was too caught in his training and trying to prove himself to Reginald to acknowledge, unpack and dissect his feelings for Vanya.

♡ When Five jumped, Vanya hoped that one day Five would return. He became a bit of a “knight in shining armor” figure in her mind. As she grew up and Reginald’s treatment towards her got worse, she’d spend her nights fanatising about Five suddenly appearing and whisking her away to some other place, far away from Reginald and superpowers and vigilante work. Eventually too much time went on, and Vanya let both her fantasy and Five go. This was when she really became cynical and depressed. She felt like there was no real good in the world, that everything was a sham. For Five, he was much too caught up in surviving the apocalypse and later the Commission and getting back to his family to save them to think about his feelings for Vanya. There’s just never been the right time, or right place for him. He cherished her book though, her tell-all was like a lifeline for him, his bit of hope, his motivation to push forward to see her and the others some day.

♡ Vanya is the first one he confides in, Vanya is the one he trusts. As they sit there in her homely little apartment, a fragile, weighted silence settling between them full of so much to say, too much in fact that it’s easiest to say nothing at all. Vanya has a hard time accepting that Five actually has come back to save her, she associates the notion with her child like daydreaming and it all feels surreal. Plus she’s spent all these years in a decent of self hate, isolation and insecurity. The fact that anyone is trying to reach out to her at all sounds fantastical. For Five, seeing Vanya all grown up is a reminder of all the time he’s lost, time he can never get back. And while he felt like not allowing himself to dwell too much in the last or the what-ifs and could-have-been were essential to his survival in the apocalypse, he allows his mind to wonder for just a moment... but thinking about what hasn’t happened, what won’t happen, is a waste of time, and time is precious. The end of the world is coming in seven days, Five can’t waste a second.

♡ The cruel irony that Vanya is the bringer of the apocalypse is cold and sharp as a knife to the gut. His mind races on the stage as the smell of blood permiates the air of the concert hall. Could he have helped her if he had stayed? They’re so close, he can’t lose her- or the others -again. He feels like he’s failed her, like his absence is what set this all off. She wouldn’t have been isolated, so jaded and hurt if he had been around to remind her of her worth, that she’s better than what Reginald tells her she is. She wouldn’t have fallen in the arms of Leonard, his very name makes Five shudder with a blinding, uncontrollable sort of rage, of Five had been there in the first place. If only he could go back... then, he realizes they have a last ditch resort to fix all this.

♡ He has been fighting his whole life. Fighting himself and his self doubts. Fighting Reginald’s expectations. Fighting for survival. Fighting for hope as each day of his contract brought him closer to his family. And now he’s fighting his family. He’s out in the middle of nowhere, at the intersection of dirt roads out in some cow pastures. He’s staring Vanya down as she glows an ethereal white and a strange energy moves through the air, feeling charged and excited, like the feeling before a thunderstorm. She’s fallen for someone else. And this someone is tearing Vanya away from him. They’re so close to returning to their timeline, back to where they belong, in peace, so they can start again, so they can take back their time. But Vanya has another priority, someone else’s heart. And Five reminds himself he has no right to complain or be upset, he was the one who left her first, all those years ago when he felt like he had something to prove to Reginald. So he lets her go, and prays to anyone and everyone who may be listening that she returns to him.

He going to get them back.

Together.

One way or another.

Here’s a quick general canon-compliant interpretation of events before work :,) I personally love Aidan’s headcanon that they had unexplored feelings for one another, then Five jumped and when he came back it was too late (or so they think, it just hasn’t been the right time for them yet).
