It's been said before, but goddammit I love the material components for spells in D&D. They're so stupid.
Detect Thoughts requires a copper to cast. Gust of Wind needs beans. Sunbeam requires a magnifying glass. Passwall uses sesame seeds.
Darkvision needs fucking. Carrots.

i think one of the reasons i get mildly annoyed about worldbuilding threads that are 200 tweets of why you should care about where blue dye comes from in your world before saying someone is wearing blue is that so few of them go up to the second level of "and that should impact your characters somehow" - i don't care that blue dye comes from pressing berries that only grow in one kingdom a thousand miles away if people are casually wearing blue

I don't think I could be trusted with shapeshifting powers bc I would just turn into a bear and attack things with my claws at any minor inconvenience. it would be my go-to solution for everything

I don’t know, I may be not the best at doing it (That’d be assuming i know how to use language) but something that bothers me a lot with fanfiction (su fanfics, specifically, since thats the only fan thing I read at the moment) is forgetting that characters have a talking registry.
A character is not only their actions but also how they express themselves verbally, what set of words, the slang, the gramatical structure, the expressions and the idioms they tend to use. how talkative or quiet they are… It says a lot about their personalities. And it helps the reader to believe they are them and not a doll that says things in the name of that character.

How does the anatomy of the Night Fury (HTTYD) measure up to real dragon anatomy, if it were? (Specifically as regards the wings.) Which species in HTTYD would be best anatomically? If you don't mind answering. Have a lovely day!
Tumblr media
(image description: several screencaps of the first how to train your dragon movie, showing the dragon Toothless in flight with his wings spread. these images are credited to @httydtrilogyscreencaps. Below these, I added my own very simple sketch of Toothless standing with his wings raised slightly. end description.)
Honestly, the httyd dragons are all over the place with their designs, but I appreciate how they all have nice clear silhouettes and unique appearances. I wish more of them had bigger wings, they tend to skimp on the membrane between the last finger and the body.
but the night fury specifically I love so much. it's sleek, the wings are a great size for the body, there's more flight membranes at the base and tip of the tail, the spine ridges don't look excessive. They really did a good job on this design. It does have more wing fingers than a normal bat wing, but I really don't mind that because they don't look crowded and none of them are inexplicably attached to the elbow. 10/10, very good dragon design, the retractable teeth are also amazing. I do not have the attention span to go altering every possible dragon design in this series, but the one major change I would make is really just the wings. just add more wing membrane, and that would fix a lot of them. the gronckle gets a pass because it's kind of deliberately designed with tiny wings to make a visual running gag about how bad they are at flying.

trying to explain what iPods are to a knight
Now imagine this divine alabaster tablet, emblazoned with the image of the apple of eden, of which houses a small inconceivable bard who will recite to you any limerick or hymn you so wish to enjoy at any time or occasion

i think anakin is definitely one of those, "well, it happened to me and i'm basically fine, so it can't possibly be all that bad," like the space version of the most annoying boomer possible. but the list of things that happened to anakin is just so extensively terrible that it's nearly impossible to explain to him how bad it actually is if he doesn't already get it. i think obi-wan has to spend weeks convincing his thirteen year old that child labor is bad, actually, and seven year olds shouldn't have jobs, and anakin's well-thought-out, highly intelligent response is, "what's so bad about it? at least they get paid." and obi-wan just barks WHAT'S SO BAD ABOUT CHILD LABOR? ARE YOU ASKING ME WHAT'S SO BAD ABOUT CHILD LABOR? CAN WE RETHINK THE STATEMENT FROM THE BEGINNING? whenever the discussion to raise the space minimum wage comes up, everyone has to herd anakin out of the room, because he very literally thinks that people should be grateful they get paid at all to begin with. the people around him just kind of fidget uncomfortably and stare into the middle distance, internally begging anakin to stop accidentally vomiting his childhood trauma everywhere
