I’m pretty sure I read this somewhere but I can’t find it so I don’t know and I need something to cry about cause this makes me sad:
Mary MacDonald was 19 years old when one of her best friends, Dorcas Meadowes, was killed. She was killed by Voldemort himself on her way back from a mission for the order. Despite Mary’s sadness, she didn’t stick around for the funeral. She’s a muggleborn and the war against them had just started. She was going to miss her friends, but they promised to write every week. Mary found a new life in France.
Mary MacDonald was 20 when she received her first letter. Well, it wasn’t her first letter, but it’s her first like this. Remus Lupin wrote it to tell her that another one of their best friends, Marlene McKinnon, had died. She was murdered in her home, along with her mother. When Mary got the news she lost it. She cried and cried. Despite the immense grief Mary felt about Marlene’s death, she also felt panicked. It was because of this panic that prevented her from going to Marlene’s funeral in the UK. She felt ashamed, also. She was a Gryffindor. She was supposed to be brave, but she couldn’t find it in her.
Mary MacDonald was 21 when she received her next letter. This one is also from Remus. He was writing to inform her Lily and James Potter had just died. Mary was so upset she took time off from work. They had a son, Harry. Remus said he was living with Lily’s sister. To make matters worse, they were killed by their best friend and Harry’s godfather, Sirius Black. He was a spy for You-Know-Who. And Lily and James were the bravest people Mary knew, so if they could be killed so young surely she couldn’t go to their funeral. After all they were in hiding and still they were killed by You-Know-Who himself. It was the safest choice not going. Even though You-Know-Who has met his downfall.
Mary MacDonald received another letter from Remus about a week later. Peter Pettigrew has died this time. Killed by Sirius Black. All that’s left is a finger, Remus said. At least Sirius Black got caught. The war was over, but she still couldn’t find it in herself to go back to England. Even for Peter’s funeral. She cries a lot, though.
Mary MacDonald hadn’t heard from Remus in 15 years. Sirius Black had died. Apparently, Peter was the spy and was the one who had Lily and James killed. Also, he faked his own death. He was still alive, though. But Sirius wasn’t. That meant that another war was coming, so she couldn’t possibly go to England now. Not even for Sirius’s funeral. Mary cried so much, though, that her parents visited to check on her.
When Mary MacDonald is 37 when she gets Remus’s next letter. Peter Pettigrew has just died. For real. Mary cried a little, but after all he had done she didn’t care enough to risk her safety for his funeral.
Several months later Mary MacDonald was sent another letter. She thought it was from Remus. He’s the only person that writes her, after all. But it was from Kingsley Schaklebolt. Remus Lupin had died in the final battle; also known as the Battle of Hogwarts. Remus was to be awarded Order of Merlin, first class. She was to accept it on his behalf. She had no idea why she out of everyone she was asked. Not only would she accept the award for him and go to his funeral it would be the first time she visited home in 18 years. The thought made her sick. She was the last one left. She was the last one of Gryffindor class 1978. Mary did not stop crying until she got to the Ministry of Magic to get the award. Afterwards, she cried some more because she is the last one left and she cannot be the last one left.
