beverly crusher/jean-luc picard fanfiction
titled: You're a Man Now, Boy [part two]
summary: based on the canon fact that Jean-Luc was present for Wesley’s birth: Jean-Luc spends time with baby Wesley, trying to reconcile his guilt over the traumatic birth while helping an overwhelmed Beverly. [important note: this won't make sense unless you read part one]
The crunch of the break, the capitulation of the bone. There was something almost biblical about it all. The same hand that brought life, helped birth it into this world, was a hand of violence. “They say that a child born into a burning house thinks the whole world is on fire, and I'm sorry that I was the reason that the world was on fire for you, even if it was only for a short time."

beverly crusher/jean-luc picard - oneshot fanfiction "Blush"
" She made a mental plan as she changed into her sleepwear. She’d sleep on top of the covers, he’d sleep under them. She’d curl up in the fetal position while facing away from him. She’d sleep on the very edge of her side of the bed and everything would be just fine. They had survived wars. Klingon, Cardassian, Borg, even gooey black piles of sludge with murderous tendencies. They could survive this. "

Alright friendos, buckle up. This isn't an episode review, this is an episode dissertation.
*cracks knuckles*
Today, we are going to talk about "Attached" because I have thoughts and feelings that have rampaged in my heart on a hamster wheel for two decades.
Thesis: Picard and Crusher are canonically in love.
Tumblr media
Evidence: *gestures vaguely to 178 episodes of stolen glances, hugs, hand holding, shameless flirting, heavy history, kisses, jealousy, breakfast together every morning, this episode*
Okay, jokes aside, "Attached" is the officially designated, written with explicit intent, "this is our Picard/Crusher episode to appease you rabid fans". Except, plot twist, it didn't appease, it only INFLAMED.
To begin, the episode is about Picard and Crusher beaming down to a planet for normal Starfleet reasons but they end up getting kidnapped. They then discover that their nappers have implanted these little knobby devises on the back of their necks as a means of information extraction.
Tumblr media
But they escape before this can happen and embark on a journey through an alien wilderness that suspiciously looks like Southern California. As they journey, they discover that these devices have somehow linked them telepathically and they basically have open access to each other's thoughts. *Kool-aid man voice* Oh yeah.
We spend most of the episode watching Picard and Beverly finish each other's sentences and they are flirty and funny and we get some great little insights into both of their characters. Beverly is secretly embarrassed that she doesn't think before she speaks and Picard reveals that sometimes he just pretends to know what he's doing when in reality he isn't quite sure.
But the big juicy part happens when they settle down for the night around a campfire.
At first its fun because Picard accidentally reveals he hates having fancy breakfasts, which is a little payoff to the opening scene where Beverly is telling him she has a great new Vulcan dish for them to try. And then Beverly is like "I was just trying to be fancy for you, I also like simple breakfasts."
Tumblr media
And it's warm and happy and fuzzy and nice... but then-
Beverly brings up Jack, her dead husband who was best buds with Picard (and served under Picard on the Stargazer and was killed there), and Picard gets uncomfortable because he *through clenched teeth*... hates.... revealing... things... about... himself.
And then Beverly moves in for the kill: "Why didn't you ever tell me you were in love with me?"
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And Picard's like "Psh. What? No. Maybe. I mean, like you didn't know?" Playing it all cool, as if his biggest secret he's kept tucked away in the tubes of his artificial heart for 25 years hasn't just been thrown, naked and squalling, into the frigid open air.
And Beverly relents and is like "Well, I mean, I always knew we found each other scrumptiously bangable..."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Picard realizes there's no getting away, so he opens up. It's actually quite emotional as he explains that he promised himself he could never, ever let her know his true feelings because it would be betraying his best friend.
Tumblr media
And we get a great callback and explanation to the very first episode when Picard was horrified to find that Beverly had requested to be his CMO.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I mean, this poor dude, not only did he lose his best friend, he blames himself for his death, AND he's wildly in love with his wife. Like, there are some seriously hefty layers of guilt going on here. Throw in Picard's inherent sense of morality and you've got yourself a succulent guilt casserole.
Picard, drowning in his casserole, changes tactics and says that, slowly, over time, he no longer had those feelings and that now they are just friends. He purposefully friendzones himself. And Beverly has this odd expression on her face that implies she doesn't quite believe him. Which, I mean, she can read his thoughts, so...
They settle down for the night and Picard just stares blankly up at the sky and you can viscerally feel the emotional destitution radiating from him.
Tumblr media
The next day they are once again scampering around Southern California-- I mean Kesprytt III, trying to get across some border so the Enterprise can snatch them up.
And here's the keystone moment that proves my thesis. Beverly shoves Picard through this forcefield border thing to save him and sacrifices herself. Their eyes lock and thoughts clearly pass between them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The script confirms this.
Tumblr media
Back on the Enterprise, all safe and sound, and giggly...and confusing Riker.
Tumblr media
They have dinner. And this is the scene that has rampaged through the fandom like an eternally burning fire beast, the Balrog basically, breathtakingly beautiful and yet so destructive.
But there's one little line here that tells us everything we need to know. You see, not once did Beverly vocalize her own feelings towards Picard, she just acknowledged a "mutual attraction". But here, Picard says "Now that we know how each of us feels, perhaps we shouldn't be afraid to explore those feelings?"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Now that we know how EACH OF US FEELS." Not, "Now that you know how I feel." or "felt". No past tense, only present tense.
Beverly let it slip somewhere along the way that she indeed has feelings towards Picard and he heard her. The scene around the fire was a closed book of a conversation. Picard said "I no longer have those feelings. Goodnight." And Beverly didn't contest it. But for this line to exist, something between these scenes had to have happened that changed and reopened that book: the forcefield separation scene.
Then, of course, Beverly turns Picard down and it's genuinely heart breaking and the worst. BUT. I do find some solace in the script, as the lines were slightly different, and significantly less bizarre than "Maybe we should be afraid." like what??
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then Beverly leaves and they both look SO SAD and I AM SAD.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In conclusion, I love this episode and have come to peace with the fact that the writers were like "Haha yeah they should be together but we have to make the movies still and dealing with them being a couple would be annoying." because we have 7 years of getting to watch them grow close and then admit that they do indeed love each other. And that's enough. It also has given us a vast and amazing well to draw from for fan fiction.
As a final note, Jonathan Frakes directed this and he did a great job. The lighting and shots are better than the average episode.
As an extra super final note, if you or a loved one has been diagnosed with pining for a satisfying conclusion (and new beginning) to this couple, go read "Death in Winter" by Michael Jan Friedman. It's the first in the relaunch books (post Nemesis) and it officially gets these two together and reading it feels like putting aloe vera on a sunburn.

The heart of the Universe
We have encountered extraordinary characters in the Star Trek universe over the last five decades. One of those amazing characters is none other than Dr. Beverly Crusher, the Chief Medical Officer of the Starship Enterprise-D. Not only was she an accomplished doctor and scientist, but she was also a mother. This is where her story showcases just what kind of person Beverly is.
Tumblr media
Let's take a quick trip down memory lane, shall we?
Beverly didn't exactly have the most amazing upbringing. She was orphaned at a young age and was raised by the only family she knew; her Grandmother, Felisa. Beverly mentioned she was an awkward child, often lonely, and didn't have many friends. She survived a cataclysmic disaster on Arvada III before settling down in Caldos with her Grandmother. Beverly found solace in helping others and it gave her a sense of gratification and she decided to take those ambitions to Starfleet to become a Doctor. This is where she meets Jack Crusher, they marry and have a son named Wesley. Her new life with her family was a stark comparison to how she grew up and for Beverly, life couldn't be more perfect… or so she thought.
When Jack died in a Mission accident, Beverly was now a single mom of her 5-year-old son and was determined to make his life the best possible. She continued her career in Medicine and Science, even becoming a Commander. She also made sure Wesley had every opportunity to grow his interest and become who he needed to be. This leads them to Enterprise-D, where Beverly is now the Chief Medical Officer and her son can have hands-on experience with his interests. Though, her complicated relationship with the Captain, didn't deter her from doing what was best for not only Wesley but for herself. However, as Jean-Luc and Beverly grew closer, her relationship with Wesley grew apart.
As Wesley got older, he realized that following in his parent's footsteps and joining Starfleet was not the path he should be on. Wesley joined the Travelers, magical space and time beings, leaving Beverly behind. This was the hardest decision for Beverly because she always wanted to make sure to be there for Wesley and now that he was on a path she didn't fully understand, she was completely out of her element. This wasn't a typical empty nest syndrome, this was complete uncertainty about if she will ever see her son again. And sadly, she never really did…
Tumblr media
Beverly's career and love life (to Jean-Luc Picard) was the only thing she had left in her life. Her family was now gone and all she had was her crew. She loved her crew of the Enterprise and they loved her just the same, but Beverly had a void in her she never thought she could fill. She wanted more children, but because the on-again off-again relationship she had with the Captain was uncertain, she didn't think it would happen. Especially because he made it very clear he didn't want to have a family. Yes, she could have moved on to someone else, but in typical "Beverly" fashion, she put others before herself and loved wholeheartedly and loved Jean-Luc very much to the point that it hurt. I do not believe she could have easily moved on and she wouldn't want a child just out of need. That part of her life was now over and she had to figure out what to do next.
After one last attempt at their relationship, Beverly and Jean-Luc broke up and she left the Enterprise. Even though Beverly was now alone and with only her career at hand, she was surprised to find out she was pregnant. Even though she attempted to tell Jean-Luc the news, she had a hard time getting it to him as he was always in some sort of danger. This is where Beverly's maternal instincts kicked in and she felt she had a second chance at being a mother and she wasn't going to let anyone hurt her child, not even the father. As much as she wanted to be a family with Jean-Luc, she couldn't in good conscience risk her child's life of the uncertainty of being the son of Jean-Luc Picard. It was bad enough that she had to endure the pain of his life being at risk, she couldn't do that to her unborn child. And after losing Wesley, she couldn't risk losing another child.
Tumblr media
Beverly left her career and her entire life behind to raise and protect her son, Jack. This time was going to be different in Beverly's mind. With Wesley, she gave him the space he needed to grow and didn't hover over him, but she still lost him nonetheless. Since Jack was her second chance, she wanted to be a part of his life in a different way, expose him to many great things and share that experience with him. Though Jean-Luc was not far from her mind, she kept him close by telling Jack stories about him and playing songs that Jean-Luc shared. She made it clear his father was a wonderful man, even if he couldn't be there with them. Beverly would have never exposed Jack to being a fatherless child, but she never could shake the feeling that if the universe knew who Jack's father was, the consequences would be dire.
As we saw in the recent Star Trek: Picard installment, Beverly was right. Beverly could no longer protect Jack from the villainous beings that were now after him, and she had to turn to the only family she knew: The Crew of the Enterprise. Beverly felt she failed in protecting Jack, but after a week of letting the news that he is a father settle, and seeing just the kind of danger Jack was in, Jean-Luc reassured Beverly that it was a testament to her strength, love, and loyalty that kept Jack safe all this time.
Finding out that Jack was special with abilities beyond her comprehension, didn't help in the matter. Losing one son to an unpredictable cosmic journey, but both sons? Beverly was always the hardest on herself and so failure wasn't far from her mind. She had to endure the most difficult challenges while trying to save Jack but the end didn't happen like she expected. Her life had always ended in a heartbreaking manner, losing those she loves and leaving her behind. But instead, Jack was saved, Jean-Luc was saved, the universe was saved… It was a feeling Beverly never had experienced before: relief and gratification.
Tumblr media
Many may think Beverly was wrong in keeping Jack away from Jean-Luc, and many are right. However, when you break down just what Beverly had gone through in her life and just what kind of man Jean-Luc was, it is only a human reaction to fall victim to fear. But it wasn't just fear she had, she had maternal instincts. Like Beverly said:
"As a mother, your whole being is about protecting your child"
She may have done the wrong thing but she did it for the right reasons. As much as we associate Beverly with her fierce determination, dedication, and empathy, we also must showcase the love she has for not only her children but the love of Jean-Luc, her friends, her crew, and her patients. This is what makes Beverly what fans call "The heart of the crew" -- But I want to take it a step further and say she is "The heart of the universe" -- willing to always put herself last, and as a mother, she is willing to sacrifice everything for her children no matter what the consequences that may be. Being a mother has always been Beverly's top priority since the day Wesley was born. It is that protective nature and unconditional love she has for her children that make her such an amazing character. That IS Beverly Crusher.
Beverly may be a flawed character but it is those flaws that fans love about her and understand her the most. We understand her drive, we understand her commitment and we understand that no matter the best intentions, it doesn't always come out the way we want it. Beverly is the fan's character, the most relatable. She has taught us that Love is always the most powerful and most rewarding gift of all.
Happy Mother's Day

one of my favorite information tidbits about star trek tng is that in the episode Qpid when they’re transported to Q’s version of Sherwood Forest, in the fight scene, you see Beverly and Deanna smashing vases over the bad guy’s heads. meanwhile, the guys are doing the sword fighting.
However, the ONLY two people (besides Patrick) who are trained in stage sword fighting are MARINA AND GATES!!! so the sword fighting that the guys are doing is just complete bullshit made up moves. and watching that scene becomes 10x funnier once you know that because it’s suddenly VERY obvious that they have no clue what they’re doing LMAO.
(apparently production said it wouldn’t have been ‘period accurate’ for Beverly and Deanna to be sword fighting which is absolutely dumb as fuck but it makes the scene more laughable)
go back and watch it, it’s hilarious to watch Frakes try to disembowel a guy like a kid holding a toy lightsaber
