The shaft of light from the hallway elongated across the floor and Barbara turned over her shoulder to see that Melissa was hesitating in the doorway. Taylor looked up and set her bonnet aside so it was mostly hidden beneath the bed sheet.

“Goodnight, honey,” Barbara said, and stood up from the bed.

Melissa did not move from the doorway until Barbara reached it, so their bodies had to fit together in the narrow space. Barbara did not go back downstairs. She knew she should. She was fairly sure Ume was sitting in the backyard alone now while the men smoked out front. Janine had left early, with Officer Eddie, which neither of them had done a good job of disguising.

The phone rang as Barbara was rinsing her mug in the sink. She shut off the faucet with her elbow and dried her hands on the dish towel hanging over the handle of the oven, the phone trapped between her ear and shoulder. 

“Howard residence, this is Barbara speaking.”

“Mrs Howard.” An unfamiliar voice on the end of the line. Barbara inhaled sharply through her nose, and kept all that air in her lungs until the voice said, “They’ll dock this afternoon.”

(Gerald Howard and Joseph Schemmenti are deployed together on a cruise missile submarine during the Cold War. Their wives wait, and worry, and find solace in each other.)

It's stupid that bread goes bad so fast. Bread should last ten million years on your countertop. You should be able to feed yourself off the same loaf of bread from the day you are born to the day you die. They should pass down bread between generations like a family heirloom. There should be remnants of still-good bread after the heat death of the universe.
