The fact that Alicent thinks Rhaenyra is a conniving woman who will murder her children because she lied to her once 10 years ago is really funny to me (especially considering she lied for 6 months first), especially when Rhaenyra legit offered a mariage offer that would protect her children.

When I say I hate The Greens I do not mean Helaena Targaryen. Let that strange pretty girl play with her bugs and have quiet prophecies of future violence that everyone will ignore. She's just like me and I love her.

I think that it was mutual and always is to some degree, but I think for Rhaenyra, having to live with Alicent as her stepmom probably killed off any desire she had for Alicent, but it’s clear there’s a longing there deep underneath. I think the scene with them talking at the beginning of episode 4 was supposed to reinforce that. Rhaenyra has clearly made exploring herself and other relationships much more a priority where Alicent’s only true, meaningful connection is Rhaenyra. Even if they had the tools to do that emotional labor, society would never let them be together and work out because men suck.

I really love all of the people in the HOTD tags and watching the show (including some of the critics I read!) shipping Rhaenyra/Alicent… I personally see it a lot more on Alicent’s end at this point than Rhaenyra’s (it’s easier to see as mutual earlier in the show) but even just from that it’s such a good, inspired choice whether it’s coming from the whole team or just the actors. Gay subtext can go a long way even as “just” an actor decision, see: Garashir in DS9…. and like with that ship, I think this one is not “separate” from or against the grain of a show but ties really nearly into it and makes it so much richer. It fits into the theme of how women are denied agency especially sexual agency and how that informs their lack of hegemonic power, and it also makes the eventual turn that the relationship between the two of them takes in the Dance of the Dragons so much richer, if Alicent and/or Rhaenyra feels spurned by someone they love and that motivates that eventual enmity… so much richer than the Ladies Be Feudin’ tack the book takes. But of course since in-universe that book is written by a man, the show version raises interesting questions about how much men writing history especially years later don’t see, understand or value the rich, intimate relationships between women, romantic/sexual or otherwise, as a thing that is important to and impacts history. I love it
