there is something so darkly comical about tumblr potentially outliving twitter
tumblr, which is held together with duct tape and madness, run by three raccoons in blood stained Yahoo! hats and a handful of crabs, its only discernible source of income the sale of shoelaces from an inside joke so inside no one knows the original source anymore and fake blue checkmarks... that website still lives on
truly the cockroach of social media and I love it for that

I remember reading this same post years ago and crying over it. Reading it again brings back the same feelings but also remind me the power of writing. OP might think it’s a ramble but the way you’ve written it more than anything creates that hope and despiar in the readers and that is a beautiful thing. I would still cry and love this piece when it pops up on my feed again after a ferw months/years.
Please make a post about the story of the RMS Carpathia, because it's something that's almost beyond belief and more people should know about it.
Carpathia received Titanic’s distress signal at 12:20am, April 15th, 1912. She was 58 miles away, a distance that absolutely could not be covered in less than four hours.
(Californian’s exact position at the time is…controversial. She was close enough to have helped. By all accounts she was close enough to see Titanic’s distress rockets. It’s uncertain to this day why her crew did not respond, or how many might not have been lost if she had been there. This is not the place for what-ifs. This is about what was done.)
Carpathia’s Captain Rostron had, yes, rolled out of bed instantly when woken by his radio operator, ordered his ship to Titanic’s aid and confirmed the signal before he was fully dressed. The man had never in his life responded to an emergency call. His goal tonight was to make sure nobody who heard that fact would ever believe it.
All of Carpathia’s lifeboats were swung out ready for deployment. Oil was set up to be poured off the side of the ship in case the sea turned choppy; oil would coat and calm the water near Carpathia if that happened, making it safer for lifeboats to draw up alongside her. He ordered lights to be rigged along the side of the ship so survivors could see it better, and had nets and ladders rigged along her sides ready to be dropped when they arrived, in order to let as many survivors as possible climb aboard at once.
I don’t know if his making provisions for there still being survivors in the water was optimism or not. I think he knew they were never going to get there in time for that. I think he did it anyway because, god, you have to hope.
Carpathia had three dining rooms, which were immediately converted into triage and first aid stations. Each had a doctor assigned to it. Hot soup, coffee, and tea were prepared in bulk in each dining room, and blankets and warm clothes were collected to be ready to hand out. By this time, many of the passengers were awake–prepping a ship for disaster relief isn’t quiet–and all of them stepped up to help, many donating their own clothes and blankets.
And then he did something I tend to refer to as diverting all power from life support.
Here’s the thing about steamships: They run on steam. Shocking, I know; but that steam powers everything on the ship, and right now, Carpathia needed power. So Rostron turned off hot water and central heating, which bled valuable steam power, to everywhere but the dining rooms–which, of course, were being used to make hot drinks and receive survivors. He woke up all the engineers, all the stokers and firemen, diverted all that steam back into the engines, and asked his ship to go as fast as she possibly could. And when she’d done that, he asked her to go faster.
I need you to understand that you simply can’t push a ship very far past its top speed. Pushing that much sheer tonnage through the water becomes harder with each extra knot past the speed it was designed for. Pushing a ship past its rated speed is not only reckless–it’s difficult to maneuver–but it puts an incredible amount of strain on the engines. Ships are not designed to exceed their top speed by even one knot. They can’t do it. It can’t be done.
Carpathia’s absolute do-or-die, the-engines-can’t-take-this-forever top speed was fourteen knots. Dodging icebergs, in the dark and the cold, surrounded by mist, she sustained a speed of almost seventeen and a half.
No one would have asked this of them. It wasn’t expected. They were almost sixty miles away, with icebergs in their path. They had a responsibility to respond; they did not have a responsibility to do the impossible and do it well. No one would have faulted them for taking more time to confirm the severity of the issue. No one would have blamed them for a slow and cautious approach. No one but themselves.
They damn near broke the laws of physics, galloping north headlong into the dark in the desperate hope that if they could shave an hour, half an hour, five minutes off their arrival time, maybe for one more person those five minutes would make the difference. I say: three people had died by the time they were lifted from the lifeboats. For all we know, in another hour it might have been more. I say they made all the difference in the world.
This ship and her crew received a message from a location they could not hope to reach in under four hours. Just barely over three hours later, they arrived at Titanic’s last known coordinates. Half an hour after that, at 4am, they would finally find the first of the lifeboats. it would take until 8:30 in the morning for the last survivor to be brought onboard. Passengers from Carpathia universally gave up their berths, staterooms, and clothing to the survivors, assisting the crew at every turn and sitting with the sobbing rescuees to offer whatever comfort they could.
In total, 705 people of Titanic’s original 2208 were brought onto Carpathia alive. No other ship would find survivors.
At 12:20am April 15th, 1912, there was a miracle on the North Atlantic. And it happened because a group of humans, some of them strangers, many of them only passengers on a small and unimpressive steam liner, looked at each other and decided: I cannot live with myself if I do anything less.
I think the least we can do is remember them for it.

I found out your were on Tumblr because Neil Gaiman reblogged something of yours. I enjoy the fact that you both get the "are you really ____" asks. People's incredulity at you both being on this site makes me smile.
I can't speak for Neil, but speaking for myself, a weird elder who lives in the deepest part of the oldest woods, I love it when someone wanders by and notices this little cottage that's pretty much been here since before the woods were planted.

Will we be able to tell the difference between the shots with the 5 fennic foxes and their stunt double david Tennant, because I want to transitions to be as smooth as possible
Sure. All the acting is done by the foxes. If the character of Crowley is blowing up, burning, or being dropped from a great height then it's David Tennant. Except for the scene where he explodes and that's a friend of the producer's named Raoul. Someone could probably make a flow chart to explain it.

Hello there me from two years ago! I know that there’s no point in replying to this but I wanna go back in time and give you a hug, my darling. It does get better and we do escape from our home. The English literature bit is a bit sad but you do comes to term with it and you end up doing an animation masters in a different country. Sounds like an impossible dream right? But it’s not and while life is difficult and you still feel those bards of low self esteem and comparison, you are learning to deal with it. You have a very unlikely group of friends who actually have your back and you are independent and loved and thriving. Things will get better I swear.
My entire fucking GPA is gonna crash cause of a single stupid assignment and I am so fucking done at this point. I've stopled talking properly to my friends and I feel so lonely sometimes I jjet wanna jump off a building. What's the point of life anyway? Tumblr is like the only place I can rant right now cause no IRL people I know are here but I feel like I'm going crazy. My drawing is horrible and ill never get a job out of it and even English literature is giving me such bad experiences. I can't fucking leave my house without my parents with me and I'm feeling so suffocated. I'm lagging behin everyone else and I thought I was doing well but no. Fuck this shit and hope I have a shard of sanity left by the end of this year

I’m not sure I’ve ever posted this version of this photograph before. When I posted it long long ago I made it all green and did other things to hide all the Ponyo art up on the walls behind Mr Miyazaki and Mr Suzuki.
I’m posting it now because I dozed off holding my phone and had apparently managed to click through and randomly almost post this photo. Then I woke up and stopped it. Then woke up some more and thought, it’s not 2007 any longer. It’s fine to post it.
So here you go. Studio Ghibli 2007.

Due to a lull at work, I found myself with some free time.
So I decided to 3d model a furby because I couldn’t find a decent one online.
Tumblr media
It came out ok in the end. But the process came with quite a bit of nightmare fuel.
Tumblr media
I first did as much as I could without having to touch the hair sim. I had no idea how to do hair sim.
Tumblr media
But I “luckily” found a quick hair sim button in blender. So that was looking quite nice. However I was a fool. I hadn’t yet touched any sliders on the hair particle system. And i still needed to add colour.
Tumblr media
This should have been my first warning. I had to hide the face plate, so i could remove some of the hair bits that were clipping it. I wasn’t prepared.
Then I decided I wanted to have another bit of light hair on top. simply add a square under the hair and press the hair sim button.
simple.
right?
Tumblr media
I don’t know exactly how I managed this, but somehow i had made the particle system use the data from the gravity sim to generate more hair.
I made the mistake of zooming out.
…
Tumblr media
and zooming out more
Tumblr media
My computer didn’t like that. The hair, It just kept going, but the more I zoomed out the more my computer slowed down. So this is as far as i was willing to push it.
After fixing that issue I put a bit more effort prettying the model up. First I added colour to the faceplate and its different parts, then I cooked up a quick and dirty procedural texture for the eyes.
finally I made a front hair sim for the white belly, this led to another problem. at some point the baked physics started getting…
weird.
Tumblr media
no mater what I did the hair would just start growing a few frames in.
Tumblr media
I tried everything I could! I scrapped the physics bake, I trawled through all the particle systems sliders. I changed numbers randomly. I even did a full uv unwrap, which I had been avoiding. nothing fixed it.
I really didn’t want to end up with something not a furby at the end of all this work. so i kept looking for a solution.
Then i found out it animated.
Tumblr media
In the end I just saved the file (I’d realized I hadn’t saved once up until that point. almost had heart attack when it froze for a few seconds while saving), then closed and reopened blender. Of course the old, “turn it off then on again” worked perfectly.
So there you go, I now have a slightly cursed furby 3d model.

you don’t need purity in the material you consume
you have a brain, you are capable of critical thinking, you can sift through the material and keep what is edifying for you and discard what isn’t
flaws don’t necessarily make material worthless

here’s a thought: the reason why adult/minor friendships are looked upon with suspicion, and the reason why adults with minor friends are accused of being predatory or having bad intentions, is because we think that minors don’t have anything of value to offer adults that isn’t sex/a relationship. it’s a continuation of the way adults devalue minors and their perspectives and contributions to the world.
