“Halsin?”

The larger elf trembles beside him, body curling into a shaking, protective circle with knees drawn up and arms stiffly wrapped around a pillow, fingers digging into the fabric.

Astarion cautiously sits up, peering over his companion’s shoulder in the dark of their shared room, trying to catch a glance of the Druid’s face.

To his surprise, Halsin’s eyes are still shut, though not a relaxed expression of reverie, rather a twisted grimace of pain, jaw clenched and teeth grinding. His brows are furrowed, lines of stress marring his forehead…

Worse yet, tears trickle along the bridge of his nose, leaking out from shut tight eyes.

Astarion’s mind races at this revelation. In all his time spent in the Druid’s company, never has he seen him in such a state. Through his bloody rescue amidst a sea of goblins and violence, through wicked Shadows and dead, choked landscapes. His demeanor was strong, constant, calm.

Even when they came together, a tryst in the woods that never actually ended, as weeks that passed saw Astarion becoming a frequent midnight visitor, which turned to days spent in the sun, the distance between them, imposed by the vampire himself, disappeared.

Eventually, he knew it was inevitable, his would open his wounded heart and scared back to Halsin, and through tears and shame and fear, the Druid held him, steadfast and stable, only kindness in his eyes.

So there it was that Astarion was shaken to his core at the sight of his companion quaking beside him.

A wet gasp, a sob even, tore from the Druid’s mouth as he was lost still in the throes of some unknown horror, something malevolent and vicious enough to grasp him in the darkness and swallow him whole.

Astarion bit back his panic and uncertainty, though doubt of how to deal with such a thing plagued him, the thought of his Druid becoming lost in a nightmare alone, was enough to get him sucking in a steady breath, gently moving behind Halsin’s form and carefully snaking an arm atop his shoulder, palm squeezing the muscle gently.

“Shh”, he whispered quietly, lips pressing against the skin of Halsin’s nape, warm with sweat. “Shh love it’s okay…you are safe, I have you…”

Time passed as did Astarion’s comforting whispers, he kept the touch of his hands light, his lips breathing love and safety against Halsin’s skin.

Time passed, the shivering faded, the night pulled along quiet and at peace once more.
