Ah.

The look in his eyes are delicious. So utterly satisfying. The way the corners of his lips fell, the tremble in his pupils, the draining of color from his skin.

Yes. This is what you were waiting for. To see that regretful expression of shock and horror.

You bring yourself to smile, grinning with twisted pleasure. Finally, you have the upper hand.

“W-What are you saying?” His voice trembles, eyes shaking. “Even if it’s only half, they are your kin!”

You take a deep breath, breathing in the salty air. Ah, there’s the metallic smell of blood mixed in as well. “What about you, father? Have you ever treated me as your kin?”

A vein throbs in his neck, his expression twisting into anger. “You—! I raised you under my roof, fed you well until you grew into an adult. You even became the Havytte's Queen! Yet you dare bite the hand that feeds you.”

You backhand him, the sound reverberating in your ears. His eyes go wide, his mouth open in utter disbelief. It feels good to do that.

But your triumph is short-lived when he swirls around and grabs you by the throat, his grip tightening until it feels like he might crush you. He screams in your face, "You insolent bitch! I’ll kill you!“

You dig your nails into the back of his hand, struggling for breath. Your mind begins to fog and the fear settles in like a boulder in your chest.

"It's getting late." Jongin presses a kiss to your temple. "We should start heading back."

"You're right." You say, standing and stretching. The ocean waves reach a little futher, trying to reach for you and you smile, removing your shoes and moving closer to the water. The ocean waves are cool against your feet, the sand soft. You follow the edge of the beach and call out, "Aria! It's time to head back."

Your daughter surfaces, her iridescent tail splashing as she climbs onto shore, morphing immediately into legs. You open your arms for her, giggling as she tackles you. To think that your child would be able to control her legs and tail like this without needing to wait for her tail to dry...

"Can I swim with you next time, mommy?" Aria asks as you take her hand, heading back towards the palace.

You mull over this question for a bit. You haven't gone swimming in a long time, probably not since Aria got used to her tail, and that must've been 5 or 6 years ago now. Ever since her birth, your desperate longing for the ocean subsided considerably, and you've had a weird hangup about going back into the water. Ever since the revolutionary attack, you haven't gone back once, only recieving reports and recruiting merfolk that are willing to come to the surface. But really, it's about time you go back.

You smile, squeezing Aria's hand. "Sure. Let's go swimming together next time."

Aria beams, then pulls away to run to her father. Jongin accepts her with open arms, lifting her high in the air and spinning her around. "Daddy! Mommy said she'll go swimming with me next time!"

"Really?" Jongin says, surprised. His eyes shine with joy. "That's great, sweetie."

"Will daddy join us?" She asks, sitting on his shoulders and fliddling with his dark brown hair.

He laughs. "Sure, but I can't go as deep as you or mommy."

"That's okay!" She wiggles her feet. "I'll stay at the top with daddy!"

You chuckle, trying to burn this image into your mind. The ocean wind blows through your hair, a song whistling.

Isn't that great? It sings. Isn't that great?

"Yes, it is." You whisper back, then quicken your pace to catch up to your husband and daughter.

"Mommy, can you sing me a lullaby?" Aria asks as you reach to turn off the light. You pause, surprised.

"I thought you're too old for lullabies now?" You tease, remembering her say that a while back, and you've stopped singing to her at night.

She pouts, snuggling deeper into the comforter. "Daddy said your song has magic. I want to hear it!"

You laugh, sitting beside her on the bed. "Well, maybe your song has magic too."

Her eyes widen and sparkle. "Me? Really?"

"Maybe." You say, patting her over the comforter. "You're my daughter after all."

"How do I know?" She asks, furrowing her brows. "Nothing ever happens when I sing."

"Hm..." You smile. "I'll teach you next time, okay? But now we should go to sleep."

She pouts again, whining, but you simply press a kiss to her forehead. You close your eyes and begin to sing, remembering her favorite lullaby when she was younger. You sing an ancient tune, one you've learned from the waves of the ocean and the creatures that inhabit it. You let your voice drift, slowing and softening as the melody comes to an end, and you know already that your daughter has fallen into a deep slumber.

You kiss her forehead again, whispering, "Sweet dreams."

And when you return to your room, Jongin had just finished his work and is taking off his formal clothes. He smiles when he sees you, his eyes tired but filled with content. He pulls you in and presses a kiss to your lips. "She's asleep?"

"Yes, she asked me to sing her a lullaby." You say, nudging him with your hip. "What did you tell her?"

He chuckles. "Only about how amazing you are." He wraps his arms around you, nuzzling against your neck.

"Love." He calls sweetly, and you hum in response.

"What do you think about having another one?" He pulls away to look at you, tilting his head at you like a puppy but his dark eyes are filled with mirth.

You laugh as he pulls you in for another kiss and you say, "We'll see."

And like that, you fall asleep in his arms every night, and your husband and child are there to greet you every morning. You live your life filled with happiness you never thought you could have. Truly, you're so glad you came here, and so glad to have met Jongin who loved you unconditionally from the start.

Your and Jongin's reign started an era of peace between Havytte and Atlantica never before seen in history. Slowly, with your knowledge of the merfolk and their society, you started businesses, collaborations, and more between the merfolk and humans. The merfolk provided underwater transportation, and the humans provided them with food and items they've never seen before. Truly, both kingdoms were booming.

And when the two of you became old, your dear daughter, Aria took over as Queen. You eventually gave birth to a boy, Hayden, who took over has head of the Royal Knights when Junmyeon eventually retired. Junmyeon trained him as if he were his own son, and was so proud when he took over. Jongdae always acted like their uncle, watching over the children as they grew up.

You lean against Jongin's shoulder, old and retired now. You stare out to the beach from your porch, having moved to the countryside, away from the bustle of the capital where your children still live. They come to visit often, but their work demands so much of them. Nor do you mind, because Jongin is always by your side, and you never feel lonely.

"I hope one day I'll be able to return to the ocean with you." Jongin says, holding your wrinkly hand in his. "I can't wait."

"What are you saying?" You scold him lightly. "We still have more years to live."

He chuckles. "Of course. I'm just saying. When that day comes, we'll both return to the ocean and I'll finally get to understand how you feel."

Tears well up in your eyes and you don't know what to say.

"I hope we go together." You finally whisper.

Jongin sighs contentely, patting your hand. "No matter what, the ocean will be there. We will never be alone."

"Yeah." You say, listening the soft crashing of the waves.

"Will you sing for me?" Jongin asks. "Like how you used to when we were younger."

"Mm, alright." Even in your old age, your singing still mesmerizes people. Your voice still sounds clear and elegant, and Jongin smiles against you.

"I love you." He whispers. "Even after all this time, I still love you as much as I did then."

You laugh, pulling him close. "And I love you too. I always will."
