Hey you, hope you are doing well. Say, do you ever feel like the love and appreciation that most of the fandom gives to one character, is souring this character to you? I'm phrasing this badly. Okay. I love Malec as a ship, right. I like both Alec and Magnus. But my absolute favorite character is Magnus. Because that's just the way I tick. And I understand that for other people, their absolute favorite character is Alec. Because that's just the way they tick. And that is completely fine. That's the way it is and it's good that people like and are attracted to different characters.

But it so often feels to me that in their devotion to that one character, the other half of the ship gets so very neglected. And this then is making me dislike that one character.

Like, for every Magnus-centric post I make, there are ten Alec-centric posts. (And often the Magnus-centric posts get comments that shift the focus to Alec) For every Magnus-centric fic out there, there are almost four times the amount of Alec-centric fics. (That is not actually an exaggeration. Ao3 currently has 145 fics with the "Magnus Bane-centric" tag and 448 fics with the "Alec Lightwood-centric" tag) And, again, this should be fine, because people like who they like and they have every right to write about the person they like the most. I guess I just hate the way that Magnus is so often made out to be the "bad" guy in fics in order to uplift Alec more. Or, not necessarily the "bad" buy. More like... Magnus not appreciating Alec enough? Or Magnus being a bully? Or "dark" or "possessive" Magnus, while Alec is just that poor cinnamon roll whose "pure love" changes Magnus? Or something like that?

Or like Magnus magic being more favorable to Alec, than Magnus himself. Or Magnus' friends or other downworlders being protective of Alec, warning Magnus off about breaking that poor boys heart.

And, I know not every Alec-centric fic is like this. There are fics that focus on Alec but still treat Magnus fairly.

But it still feels that there are so many that just use Magnus in a way that will make Alec shine brighter, and it just makes me so frustrated, you know? Like, I see a tag that hints at the story being mostly about Alec, or a summary that mostly focuses on Alec, and I just... lose interest? It's like, "Oh, this is gonna be another 'Alec Lightwood is the best thing since sliced bread' type of story."

And this very one sided seeming appreciation of one character of the most popular ship is actually making me resentful of Alec.

And I don't want that, because I *like* Alec. He is a good character with a solid story arc and decent development and he and Magnus are *good* together.

But it's just always "Alec this" and "Alec that" and I'm just getting so tired of it?

Like, I don't want the reverse. I don't want for fics to only ever paint Magnus in a good light, to only uplift Magnus and to make Magnus the focus point of every other character or plot.

But... I don't even know how to say this. It feels like I said way too much for not being able to make a solid point... sigh.

oh my god literally ALL THE TIME. genuinely part of why i left the fandom was just because of how frustrating and often racist it was. it's so so obvious alec is the favorite and it's so obvious why and like. everything is always made to be about him and like. it so often involves villainizing magnus in ways that are just so fucking annoying and awful and ooc (YEAH making him a bully or dark or evil somehow or even straight up actually abusive), and often while also like. making alec a saint and/or infantilizing him in a way that does his character a disservice too! (he's not a baby! he's not an idiot! he's not perfect! oh my god!) and acting like everyone in the world adores him, including like, magnus's own friends lecturing him not to hurt alec???????? what????? shit like that and it's just. it's so frustrating and infuriating and yeah! it does make me like alec less, which is annoying bc i want to like alec bc i do like alec but like. the fandom was so goddamn fucking annoying about him and about how they treated the ship that like. i can't even articulate it, especially not anymore after i left so long ago after just being fed up with it, but like. the unfairness and unevenness in how the fandom treats these characters makes me want to commit arson

Any crossover thoughts? Like, is there a series/movie you would like to crossover with Shadowhunters, and especially Magnus and Alec? Would you be thinking of a true merging of the two different universes, 'Fish out of water' style? (example, Pokemon: Rogue portal transports Malec into the world of Pokemon, and what the hell is this?) XD Or would you just use a set of characters from the one medium in the other medium, like they have always been part of it? (example, Witcher: Geralt is a shadowhunter and Jaskier is a Seelie and at some point Geralt comes to NY and trains Alec and the others and Jaskier and Magnus have been friends for years.) Or completely replace one set of characters with the other. (example, Marvel: Super Soldier Alec Lightwood and tech genius billionaire Magnus fight as part of a team of the world's mightiest heroes) Like, what's your poison?

i like both crossovers and fusions, but i admit i will just brew one for literally anything i watch. i'll be like hm. what if magnus was here.

i think some good fusions would be like. an au for warehouse 13 or the librarians?

the latter would have a lovely dynamic of magnus being a librarian (smart and getting into trouble, wanting to study magic, etc) and alec being a guardian (protecting him, pulling him out of dangerous situations, but having his own intelligence to bring to the table too) as well as maybe some messy backstory with immortality....

but the former... also like. magnus having a connection with the warehouse.... no thoughts all vibes tbh.

Which makes cuddling up after ward maintainance in the institute a "medical necessity, so I won't be available for the next hour, until I can be reasonably sure that the high warlock will bear no ill effects from the service rendered. Barring an emergency, Underhill will assume command until then."

god i love the idea of like. alec's kind of a space heater but magnus loves it. and when he's exhausted/hurt/drained just like. collapsing into alec's arms and letting himself be warmed up, be held and cared for... honestly the emotional tlc helps him just as much as the literal heat sharing

Beware of MPREG hc, totally okay if that's not your thing and you would rather skip it. I just keep thinking of the absolute chaotic order Alec displayed while making that soup for his mom's visit. This completely all-over-the-place feeling you get from him in that scene. "This needs to be done and that needs to be done and follow the instructions". And I remember that exact same feeling about my uncle, when my aunt was pregnant with their first child. He was the most nervous, excited, trying-to-keep-on-top-of-a-situation-that-at-that-point-didn't-need-anyone-to-be-on-top-of-it person on the planet. And that's exactly how I now and forever will picture Alec with a pregnant Magnus.

im going to be fully honest i actually kinda love mpreg but only in my very specific/narrow tastes. like most mpreg fic i don't actually enjoy that much bc it ends up just. doing things i don't enjoy. but as a concept i have fun with it. especially in kink--what?

magnus at the public halloween party has some dorky possibly overcomplicated/nerdy couples costume with alec (they're out here dressed as extremely specific historical figures but the rule is it can't be a historical figure you actually knew personally/met but magnus goes out of his way to find someone super obscure and particularly someone like. erased in most western history/pop culture probably) but then he gets home and he's like alec do you want to see my other halloween costume? :) and alec's like yeah of course babe and without fail it's like a ridiculously skimpy slutty maid costume or some shit. it's half to make alec laugh (they do laugh, sometimes they even get a few shitty horny halloween costumes) but also half bc alec will 100 percent fuck him in it and then rip it off him and fuck him again, some roleplay included. win all around.

As you know, I hold no love for the books the tv show is based on (i.e. I haven't read them and I don't plan to read them and some of the things I have found out about the differences between book plot and show plot have *really* turned me off the books).

However, sometimes I do google some things that aren't explained in the show (the show did very little of explaining and details and all that).

Anyway, I was looking a little more into shadowhunter history (when/how did they come into existence, etc.), and the shadowhunters wiki page gave me this:

Before becoming the first of his kind, Jonathan (Shadowhunter) was a Crusader born in the 11th Century. It was during this time that demons were swarming into Earth from the Void. On his way to Constantinople, he asked a warlock to summon the angel Raziel to Lake Lyn. When Raziel arrived, Jonathan begged him to mix his blood in a cup with that of man to create a race of demon fighters.

So, the first shadowhunter only came into existence because a *warlock* summoned an angel. Johnathan wasn't chosen by the angels. The angels didn't themselves choose a human to make their champion. Instead, the human Johnathan Shadowhunter was likely friends with a warlock, knew about and could see the demons that were overrunning the world (which his warlock friend and other downworlder were likely fighting, because shadowhunters didn't exist until then and that leaves only downworlders to stand against humanity and a demonic threat), and then with the warlock's help, Johnathan became a nephilim, so that he could help the warlock and other downworlders fight back the demons.

So that could be used to mean, that nephilim and downworlders (and maybe warlocks in particular) were *always* meant to fight together.

And then I took that thought an ran with it, and came up with this:

The angelic runes were supposed to be given/applied to the shadowhunter by a warlock. (preferably their partner) Just like the shadowhunter is able to power the warlock with their energy (like in the episode where Alec helped Magnus heal Luke)

Like, listen. When the shadowhunters use their steles to write the runes on their skin, it burns them. It hurts. And maybe that's because they aren't doing it the way it's supposed to be done. Shadowhunters and warlocks were supposed to be partners. To fight and stand together. There was supposed to be a bond. (though unbonded warlocks could give unbonded shadowhunters runes as well, but those weren't as long lasting or powerful, maybe)

But at some point, the nephilim discovered that they could supplement the warlocks magic with an angelic metal (from which they created their steles.) Like, Valentine would hardly be the first bigoted, hateful racist in shadowhunter circles, and maybe back then, someone like him was more successful in turning around the minds of the other nephilim.

Let a few decades/centuries pass, and anyone who would have known about this has died.

And if we take this further, we can also take a shot at the parabatai bond. Parabatai are supposed to be better fighters together, and the runes that are applied/activated by the parabatai are supposed to be stronger. And MAYBE that's because the parabatai bond is a pale imitation of what was supposed to be. The bond between shadowhunter and warlock. And the runes yearn for that kind of bond, for what it was supposed to be. The parabatai is the closest they can get, but it's not right, and the runes know that. Which is why there is the undesirable sideeffect of shared pain between the pair, which can spell the doom of both, should one get wounded badly enough.

Of course, this is just my rambling mind. But from my incredibly biased ( ;-) ) viewpoint, it makes wonderful sense. And it could of course be worked out further. Like maybe not all shadowhunters bonded with warlocks, but other downworlders like seelies, werewolves or vamps. And runes could be applied by any warlock, but if not between a bonded pair, those runes only lasted a day before they needed to be redone, or something. Like, the shadow world was united, before it became split into nephilim and downworlders.

Now imagine Alec and Magnus finding all of this out...

Magnus actually digs how tall Alec is. Magnus himself isn't short, but Alec with his 6ft3 is just hrgnnnn.

So sometimes, instead of just summoning something off a high shelf, he calls his boyfriend to get it down for him. In fact, he might magic one or two shelfs a little higher, just for the excuse the see his love stretching for it.

It probably shouldn't be hot that he has to get on his tiptoes to kiss Alec, but it is.

oh for sure. for fucking sure. magnus is like. not a short or small man but god does he love that alec's a little taller than him.

alec knows what magnus is up to but it's not like he minds. he can deal with having to get up to get random shit off shelves that magnus definitely conjured up there bc he gets to tease him back by like. "oh, here, let me get that." [one hand on the counter on one side, the other reaching up and around him to get it so that he's pressed really close to magnus's back]

anyway yes i just think magnus being very into the size/height difference. it's especially not something he's particularly used to--he's certainly been with partners that are stronger than him (warlocks only have normal human strength, even if magnus is pretty muscular, while a lot of other downworlders are more durable/supernaturally strong) but alec is one of the few who's actually physically taller/just as muscular. and like. something about having to lean up to kiss him is just... nice. and also a little bit of a huge turn on.

(also will never shut up about like. alec is taller than him, strong and a trained warrior, etc., and like. obviously it's not that magnus couldn't hold his own in a fight against him if that were to happen--duh--but like. letting himself be overpowered, and then like. you know. being overpowered, being helpless, but in a way that is specifically designed to make you feel good, in a way that makes him feel not just safe/protected but you know, good, is just... yes.)
