Pop Up Book With Cats! I feel like the push and pull occurs mentally with kids now and more with screens than anything else. It was refreshing to visit the Pop Up Book Exhibit at the Newberry Library in Chicago and see some of these. This one is from a book called Immer Froh Tagaus, Tagein by Cornelie Lechler and is from 1893 (well before smart phones and ipads!) The Crossing I like to imagine that each time we make a choice, we exercise our personal volition and a crosswalk is a visual reminder of that choice. We are deciding to move forward in a direction across space and time. So, I like to catch people as they are executing a decision just before they have to make another one. Will they turn left? Right? Go straight? They could even (like me often.) choose to turn right around and go back...maybe check to see if they turned the oven off 8 times and sing a little song about it. On average, humans supposedly make 35,000 choices a day....and we have no idea what our brains are really up to at any given moment. Have you talked with your brain today? The Dogman of Firenze About an hour before this, a man was walking down the street holding a beautiful ginger tabby kitten and I asked if I could take his photo and received an adamant "NO!" (This is why maybe don't ask is all I'm saying!) Then, I saw this man with a whopping 9 dogs with him and asked him if I could take his photo and he was more than happy to oblige. Jane Birkin If you are wondering why I didn't post this Jane Birkin photo 12 years ago, I can only tell you there were many posted with a review written by someone else (link is unfortunately dead, though). Also, when I first joined Flickr, I tended to put up sets of bands all at once and I just found that people would rather look at the cell phone shots they had taken at the show and could view at most one photo of someone else's. That's just the reality of how the world is. There is so much noise. Everyone is standing next to each other in the photo pit. It is hot and sometimes exhausting and we are sharing the same space, breathing exactly the same air, and our minds and fingers are clicking and clicking. So, we are likely getting the same shots with the same timing at slightly different angles. But maybe,just maybe, I manage to get something a little different or a little special and that's what I am hoping for. Let's not celebrate Jane because she died. Cat of the Ancient Roman Ruins If you've ever been to Rome, you know that they are super into their history (and cats!) In a stroke of extraordinary luck, we managed to get a hotel overlooking the "Cat Ruins" with an actual balcony! Each day, I'd go out there in the morning before the sun got too hot and take some photos and then watch them running around with their ruinous zoomies in the evening, which was just heavenly. I had brought treats to feed them but then I noticed later on that there were signs saying not to and that they are presumably fed by volunteers at Torre Argentina Cat Sanctuary even if they don't live in the actual shelter. Note-you can no longer take photos within the confines of the actual cat sanctuary. In any case, I enjoyed seeing these felines living their best lives but I was sad it was so hot for them!
