also i think about Crime Alley as both the physical source for bruce’s loss and also a sign of gotham’s renewal — leslie’s clinic as one example, or bruce’s dedication to social reform in park row. how after twenty years he is still tethered to the cinema, the alley, the gutters. he knows each brick by touch alone, in the dark he can find his way unaided. like the manor it is the foundation holding him upright. does he find comfort there for himself, knowing that he can always return?

but the graysons died in a field, in the ring. the ring is not stationary, it moves as haleys does. its sawdust floor is discarded after the show, its bleachers disassembled, the big top packed away for the next town, the next country, the next show. the graysons died at haleys, but it isn’t anywhere their son can return to. he can stand in the field, knee deep in grass, but the crowd will not be there, nor the tent nor the jugglers. he could travel the world and never truly find the place his parents died. the only way out is through.

Wally/Dick anon here: yes, I understand. When (unfounded, IMO) fanon becomes canon, this is where I'm not okay anymore. As an Elseworld story, this ship being canon might be fun, but it wouldn't make sense/be a good idea, for all the reasons you've given, in the main continuity.

I often nod along reading your posts, and the impression of (often justified) anger mostly comes from the frequent use of capitals, which I always take as someone yelling. I mostly hope things were better for Dick and that you could one day use caps-lock to express your joy about something great having happened to him in the current era (being rightly characterized and in a good story mostly).

This is in Star Spangled comics issue No. 8 , Dick’s FIRST solo run as Robin.

Ok so we see that “Robin’s” voice is all in bold lettering. He snarky AF. Spicy. I wonder what else distinguishes Robin from Dick. It’s clearly two separate tones. Is it lower? Is it rounder?

(I wonder when Bruce’s trademark “Bat Voice” made its first appearance??? Or is it one of those MANY things that only happened after the movies?)

You don't need a ship to have the potential for canonicity to ship it. And I think many Wally/Dick shippers probably ship them because of the Young Justice cartoon (I'm more of a Kaldur/Dick shipper myself; when Dick's older of course) where they are indeed best friends. And shipping Wally/Dick doesn't prevent them from also appreciating Linda and Wally/Linda in canon. Heck, even your argument that "Wally is painfully straight" could be taken as "he's overcompensating/performing straightness" if they want. The shippers are not hurting anyone, they're just having fun in fandom (which they have the right to). Nothing to be disgusted about. I often understand your anger, but not here.

She is a horror to herself. When fanfic writers talk about the inherent FAKENESS and Performative factor of Dick Grayson’s Boy Next Door Golden Son Perfection they actually mean Donna fucking Troy.

I am in absolute dumbfounded HORROR at the amount of meta discourse that gets PROJECTED onto Dick Grayson’s personality. I’ve witnessed this weird switching of themes and psychological drive happening in 4th wall for LITERAL YEARS and it is SCARY.

Now…people have done this whole dance number by projecting Roy’s, or Wally’s or Jason’s or Tim’s or Damian’s issues on him…fuck I think fans even let Bruce get a ride.

Fuck she even falls for a dude who’s is basically “DADDY.” She is issues on TOP of issues in NTT. She is one inch away from crushing things to smithereens. She is BARELY holding on by a thread and trying to pretend otherwise.

She is a funny contradiction in that she only looks like the golden child and the girl next door. Inside she knows she’s a hollowed out homunculus who just wants to be “normal.” She is literally like “I’m just a gurl” while having the freakin powers of a literal GODDESS.

That’s what’s HILARIOUS about her. She wants to talk on the phone and cuddle and be a HAWT MESS of a 20-something while trying to live up to Wonder Woman.

She’s like the anti-Wonder. While also being a freakin meta powerhouse.

And she keeps dying over and over again and she just wants to be a girl. Over and over and over again. And just wants to be a girl and have boyfriends and friends and just love…oh whoop now she’s been killed and erased and now she has to rely on what other people think her life meant and it doubles down on the identity issues she fuckin has.

And its creepy how people seem to think this is Dick. it’s just hilarious how this freaky 4th wall switch just keeps happening.

i read a post (that i now can’t find) that said if u mischaracterise dick grayson u then mischaracterise every other batman character and like…. yeah pretty much. he is literally patient zero of every weird fanon take

dick controls so much about how bruce and every successive character operates, thinks, and works with each other that interpreting him badly (whether on purpose or by accident) throws canon completely out of balance. like his relationship with bruce dictates jason being adopted. his particular run as robin dictates every other robin and/or batgirl and auxiliary sidekick. his relationship with bruce post ditf dictates tim’s introduction and run as robin. his run with the titans dictates young justice and tt03. what would gotham be without her robin? on and on and on it goes.

not to say that other characters don’t affect canon obvsly — but i don’t think it’s unfair to say that he is so foundational to how these characters exist that removing his influence corrupts the narrative. where would tim be if he wasn’t a dick grayson fan who recognised the quad? where would jason be if dick hadn’t left robin behind and then accepted him into the role? where would cass and steph and duke be if bruce didn’t have that experience raising dick?
