It’s also really funny to me that this is the second campaign in a row that Marisha specifically designed a character that wasn’t supposed to be romantic and failed epically and immediately.

The debate of fate versus free will is a fraught philosophical question in general, but often in fiction it is discarded in analysis altogether to simplify the discussion of authorial intent. The game system in a TTRPG like Dungeons & Dragons, however, introduces an element of randomness via dice rolls that brings this debate back to the forefront, complicating analysis of destiny and choice in a genre of which these themes are a hallmark, creating tensions between the guiding hand of intent and the entropic aspect of mechanical gameplay. As such, introducing the divine entity known as the Luxon and the arcane field of dunamancy, which focuses upon the manipulation of entropy and fate, allows Exandria as a setting to attempt to ease tensions between and more actively examine these elements by acting as a narrative agent of the game master themself. In this essay I will

Fjord is the kind of sailor who says things like “ah, my love the sea, she is a cruel mistress but she calls to me” but he means the sea is quite literally trying to kill him but he just keeps full on forgetting about that part and purposefully sailing on the sea constantly anyways.

I’m going to assume that at this point you’ve all seen Critical Role’s new show Candela Obscura and at least skimmed through the Quickstart Guide (you have done all that riiiight??) So I wanted to compile all the things I’ve done that have been shown so far. Its long so read below the line!
I’m going to try to avoid spoilers. So feel free to read without worry. I’m also going to try and avoid breaking any NDA like a good professional. So I will not be doing some deep dive behind the scenes thing. Only visuals that have already been publicly shared are going to be on here

i'm rewatching exu calamity now-- some people on the dash have been talking about and after tlovm had a few references to the calamity i can't resist-- and i really am surprised how much i feel about the purvan suul appearance in calamity
in vm purvan suul-- aside from just jokes about his name-- is just a kind of sorrowful absence. you get a sense of galdrick missing him. but hes mostly a shadow of vax's future, the corpse his armor is pulled off of for high level loot.
but brennan really made me feel for poor old purvan. he's a mid-lower level terrestrial ranger devoted to the brand new controversial goddess of death brought to a party for the wizards of flying hubris city for the sole purpose of being mocked.
no one in this room knows the world as they know it is ending in less than 12 hours, and in their eyes, the age of arcane power is omnipotent and infinite, and they just brought this young man to their party as a spectacle to laugh at for his quaint novelty.
almost everyone in that flying city will die later that night, but we know purvan lives, for a time, and fights in the ensuing onslaught the betrayer gods will wreak on this world. he dons a vestige of divergence as its born.
but we see him for a second before all of that, less powerful than everyone around him, unknowing the terror to come, but ready for it. he's grave and awkward and humble and his boots are covered in mud and i just got full of sadness and love for good ole pervy.
it was just such a way to make this figure an npc.
