What’s an au (or aus) that you would love to see in the Fence fandom? Any guilty pleasure tropes, tags, universes? 🪐💫✨

AUs I like. Hm. Im a big sucker for pirate AUs in general (@ryerum did a really cool secret Santa fanart for that and while it wasn't for me it really made my day). Since I haven't read any fics in three years, a fact that I cry over nightly btw, I can't tell you if an AU for that exists, but if it doesn't then someone should get to that. Soon. When I'm finally able to read again I need me some pirates or I'll promptly just wilt away :')

Oh, something else that gets me everytime is cowboys. Johanna made lovely fanart for that a good while ago and I remember other people mimicking that after that, so that was neat to see. Inspiration is like a forest fire I suppose and I'm the black kite watching happily at my brethren spreading it yada yada insert something actually philosophical here

Magical fantasy stuff is also a seller to me. But people tend to go off on tangins with that, either over explaining or not explaining original ideas at all, which whiffs me out a bit. It's a difficult balance, but if you find a good one that hits then boy oh boy 👀

Honestly, all things considered, it's all pretty basic. I read most things if they're formatted and at least decently written (English isn't my first language either so I'm pretty forgiving when it comes to grammatical errors and punctuation - I mean, look at all my commas. At least half of them will probably be incorrect as well since I'm used to putting so many, because us Germans love them commas in, the, middle, of, the, sentence)

If you wanna get Fence specific, there's the very obvious 'Nicholas actually being raised by Robert as his son' which is neat, anything that deals with Seiji's parents in a good manner (more trope than AU here), and I like the different sport AUs that give the guys anything but fencing. Big defender for the most used being ice skating if I assessed that correctly

If you were to recommend your top Fence fanfics, which ones are they and why?

(my answer became unnecessarily long, skip to the end for the one rec I do actually have)

So, this is slightly embarrassing, but. But. But. But. Not sure if you know or not but I also write fanfics for Fence. My problem is that I'm one of those fabled long fic writers and the one fic I have up goes up to 164k words. A little beast, to say the least. Took me a little over a year to write it, pretty proud of it still :')

Now. When I write for a fandom, I do not read in said fandom. That is solely to keep myself from stealing anybodys ideas by accident. You know how dreams work? Surely. You process all the information you've gathered (actively or passively) during the day and they come together in some weird short films or some strange blockbuster which you'll think was extremely alien in the morning, but on some level it of course made sense. It's your head after all.

To get back to the initial point, when I write, I don't read other people's work in that fandom, because when I brainstorm at the start of the writing process and put it all down, I have this outline, I know where I'm going, I know where I'll end up, but there's evething in between. Which, on a long fic that spans at least 130k when I start going, is a lot. And since I really don't wanna steal by accident and jumble in ideas that weren't mine, I don't read other people's fics. Different fandoms? Sure. Not Fence [the respective fandom] tho.

NOW since I'm writing these beasts, they take a while. I posted the other one in August 2022, started the year before (ergo, no fence reading during that time already) and I started my current project in--

August 2022. So yeah. I haven't read any fence fanfics since roughly three years. But I recently got over a very bad writers block and should be finished in maybe three months. Not making promises here tho don't hold me to this lol

TALKING ABOUT PROMISES - thinking back to any fics I DO remember (and since I write so much myself it's honestly just other long Fics that manage to stick in my useless sponge of a brain) is Promised Things from @applesandbannas747 (I can't get the link to work I'm so sorry, but you'll find it if you search the Fence fandom by word count over 100k on ao3, that's how I always did it) and it's one of the only fics EVER where I went back after an amount of time had passed to reread it. I think there's only one other fic that managed to make me do that, so respect to the tagged author.

Sorry I couldn't give you more than that. If anybody even bothered to read this far - I'm very much open to all fic recommendations that came out during the last 3 years lmao. Give me half a year and hopefully not another random writing idea in the shower and I should be finally able to read some good fan content soon

What are some of your favorite Fence headcanons? (Some you might share with others, some you might think you’re the only one who hcs it?)

First off, thank you for the asks, anon, they're actually the first ones I've ever gotten :') and it's a Fence one, the one fixation that will probably never leave!! I'm glad people remember I'm still in the fandom hehe

Anyway, your question! There are a few headcanons that I adore, where I definitely wasn't the first one to think of them but I share nonetheless. Let's start off with those:

1. Seiji is a cat person (that's just... the vibe he emits. Absolutely, 100%)

2. Seiji wears glasses (I mean it's technically canon if everything Johanna draws is automatically our shared 'canon')

3. Nicholas is a cuddler (also technically canon in the comics)

4. Robert is A Good Father™ (we know he's a good father to Jesse so there's that)

And there's of course a few where I'm fairly sure that they're mine or I haven't seen anyone else use them till now:

1. Nicholas is lactose intolerant (we're going off vibes here again and he seems exactly like the 'this allergy can't tell me how to live my life' typa guy)

2. Nicholas' mother is named Rebecca (it came to me in a dream and I'm like 90% sure I saw it another fic as well once)

3. Dante had an emo phase (I can just feel it deep in my soul)

4. Seiji's parents are a bit helpless but they're trying to be there for him (another half canon thing from the novels, but I like to think his mother is there for him as well. I'm just so sick of this horrible 'bad parents = any form of mental illness or trauma = attractive' trend)

So that's mostly it I thiiiink? There's also a few headcanons that I think are pretty icky and everytime I see or read them something in me just goes yikes. But I think I'd rather keep those to myself since I really don't wanna step on anyone's toes by something that's, in the end, completely subjective. And in a small fandom like this especially lol. Y'all are lovely and I don't wanna piss anyone off by accident :')

Is it ever mentioned, either in the comics or the novels, where Seiji lives? Like, we know since early on that Nicholas came from Bridgeport, but after writing over 100k words in my next fic (it took me a year to get over my writers block, can you believe it and now I'm churning out Google word documents like I need it to breathe) I've found myself in this slightly embarrassing dead-end

I love writing fanfiction in English and using cute pet names like "love" or "dear" or "darling" because there's just so many nice terms of endearment and I'm German. There is like, one German pet name that's actually cute and the rest you can come up with is the equivalent of walking into the office in an ahegao hoodie on a Monday morning and announcing to all your colleagues that your partner names your body parts after beloved Disney characters. I'm convinced that when you're German and you die and go to the 9th circle of hell, Satan personally hands you a "welcome home loser" leaflet that starts not with your name but with "Dear Knuddelbär" to make it abundantly clear just what kind of place you walked into and that you're never getting out. When I was 15 I had a boyfriend who called me Schnucki once and I had such a visceral reaction of discomfort that I could not take that person seriously from that day forward and broke up with him a week after. Back in my early days of fandom in the year of our lord 2013 someone in the Blue Exorcist fandom asked me "oh what are some cute German things you can call your partner, I tried googling but I don't know which of these I should use" and for a moment I wanted to delete this person's entire search history, unplug their wifi router and do a cleansing ritual for our poor mortal souls but eventually settled for "call them Schatz and roll with this throughout the entire work. Alternatively, use something in English."
