Three staccato rings made the solid wood nightstand beside you rattle without stirring you from your slumber. It’d been ringing on and off for 5 minutes, but you didn’t notice.

Luckily, Yahya did.

On the third set of rings, his eyes popped open and immediately shut once they met harsh sunlight. You were right; he needed curtains. He let out a short yawn and stretched his long legs to the foot of the bed before locating the source of the interruption.

“Hey,” he whispered as he lightly shook your arm. When you didn’t answer, he kissed the tattoo on your shoulder and called out to you again. “Baby, your phone.”

“Fuck it. Just let me sleep.”

“It’s Amy.”

“Amy,” you murmured, still adjusting to being awake.

“Mhmm. Boss Amy.”

Yahya prepared for your moment of realization by retrieving your phone from the nightstand and placing it in the hand you had hanging off the edge of the bed.

When the device began to buzz again, your body shot up and stiffened.

“Shit, Amy! Hello!”

“Sorry to wake you, but we have an emergency. The client had to move up the pitch, and I have some notes on the deck.”

“Okay, go ahead. I’ll try to remember everything and get to them when we hang up.”

“Yeah… did I mention I had a ton of notes?”

Yahya didn’t stick around to listen to the rest of the conversation. He quickly slipped into sweats and a pair of sneakers to step into the living room. Leche was the first thing to greet him.

“I know, girl, I overslept this time. Your mom kept me up all night with Martin reruns. Let me just grab her computer.”

Leche had gotten used to 6 AM gym sessions with Yahya in the weeks since you began spending more time together. Ending the day with each other usually meant waking up in his bed and sharing breakfast the next morning. It was a comfortable routine that both of you used as an excuse to feel skin to skin contact until someone made the first move. It was working for now.

You tiptoed out of the bedroom as Yahya attached Leche’s leash and made a typing motion to ask about your Mac.

“It’s on the couch,” he mouthed back.

You silently mouthed your thanks before making a talking motion with your hand, making him laugh.

“Are you listening? Need me to go over slide six again?”

“No! Totally got it. Vibes, colors, all that. Next slide.”

When you turned to talk about the day, Yahya was already closing the door. Being in his apartment alone shot a surprising pang of sadness through your chest. Each day you spent together made separation that much more difficult. He was all you could imagine in slow moments at work and during the commute back home. You were the poster child for adult puppy love if there ever was such a thing.

Amy’s instructions faded into the background while you took slow steps around the living room, observing the trinkets and photos in the immediate area. Your fingers ghosted over a framed jersey from his alma mater while you read the description etched in a gold plate.

“Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Senior Night 2008.” Beside the frame hung several medals from his days in collegiate athletics along with photos of his most significant accomplishments and fraternity paraphernalia. You laughed at a picture of him with his fraternity brothers, and their faces screwed intense expressions, wondering what he must’ve been like in college. Judging by the photo on his TV console, he was the golden boy in his NBC drama series-esque family.

“I feel like we’re not really connecting over the phone.”

“Huh.” Your knee jerk reaction made you slam your palm against your head. “I meant huh in a way to ask what you mean by that. I think we’re doing fine.”

“You sound preoccupied. Let’s regroup ahead of stand-up this morning?”

“That’s in an hour and a half.”

“Right! See you then!”

“Okay, but, Amy! Amy. Amy? Hello?”

While you grumbled your annoyance into the ether, Yahya quietly returned to his apartment with Leche on his heels.

“You hungry, girl?”

“No, I don’t have time, but thanks,” you answered as you stuffed belongings into your bag.

“I was actually talking to this girl, but I take it we won’t be doing breakfast this morning.”

He stood and patiently waited for you to get settled before handing over Leche’s leash. You could tell he was disappointed even if he did smile to ease the blow.

“I’m sorry. Amy needs me in early an-”

“Hey, you don’t need to apologize for going to work,” he laughed. “We’re still on for tonight, right?”

“Of course.” You stepped forward when he reached out for your hand and allowed him to spin you in a slow circle before pulling you back against his chest.

“Good. Because we’ve gotten into morning breath territory, so I feel like our ability to cancel plans the day of is looooong gone.”

“Yeah, but we haven’t made it to kissing with morning breath, so I think we at least have a two-hour cancellation window.”

Yahya made a face as if he was considering your statement. “That would be true except…”

His next move was obvious, but you decided to allow his lips to press against yours. Being past the innocent pecking stage but just shy of before work sex had your mind in 100 different directions. You could press the issue and end up pressed against the back of the couch and be late for your meeting or take these teenage makeout sessions for another agonizing encounter. Unfortunately, your window of opportunity slammed shut as Yahya backed off.

“Seems like we have that handled?”

“I’m not convinced. Try again.” Your hands began to wander past his chest toward the top of his sweats. If he missed the first hint, he sure as hell didn’t miss that one.

“You sure you have that kind of time,” he mumbled against your lips while walking you back toward the bedroom.

“I can make that kind of time.” Your heart was racing with anticipation and a bit of anxiety the closer you got to the bedroom. Finally, you were about to find out if the fantasy matched reality!

Until three staccato rings buzzed in the front pocket of your hoodie, effectively ending the moment for good. Yahya laughed a deep laugh at the situation while you felt your cheeks burn from embarrassment.

“Hey, Kayla.”

“Girl, are you busy?”

You looked at Yahya as he began to remove his shirt for a shower then to your phone to see that you’d wasted 15 of your 90 minutes.

“Hello?”

“Let me call you back in like two minutes. Cool?”

After making your goodbye quick, you stepped into the bedroom. Yahya stood in his closet, carefully considering an outfit for the day.

“Pick the olive green,” you spoke as you leaned against the door. “It’s a nice day to be casual, and it looks good on you. But don’t wear a button-up. Go for a t-shirt and sneakers.”

“Anything else?”

“That watch you like would be nice. I’d wear it myself, but it’s too big.”

Yahyah’s shoulders lifted and dropped from a short laugh before he turned to walk toward you. With a soft touch, he held your head to continue the kiss from earlier for a short time.

“Good luck on the pitch today. Whatever’s going on, I’m sure you’ll kill it.”

You smiled and landed one last kiss on his lips. “You too. Do all the math things. Division, cosine, tangent; all that.”

“You have no clue what I do at work, do you?”

“Not at all.”

Together, you fell into a fit of laughter that continued until you were given a final slap on the ass and sent on your way with Leche.

Time flew by while Yahya busied himself with dressing and mentally preparing for the day. At times he would stop and replay visions of his body on yours in the theater of his mind. Now that he knew that you were ready and willing, he had to make the agonizing wait worth your time and his.

“Wallet, phone, keys, charger…check,” Yahya mumbled as he bopped around his living room to Lil Baby and Gunna. He was planning to be early into the office and visit the first-floor coffee shop until he realized he was missing a final accessory. “Oh shit, the watch.”

Before he could turn to retrieve the accessory from his bedroom, the faint sound of knocking commanded his attention. A look at the pair of shoes beside the door gave him an idea of who could be on the other side.

“I’m about to set up space in the closet for all the stuff you leave behind.”

“That’s better than what I did with the stuff you left.”

Yahya couldn’t say he was surprised to see her. He knew what day it was. He was surprised to see her here, in the hallway of his apartment building, less than 5 feet from your apartment with the possibility of you stepping outside and ruining any progress made in the relationship. Especially after he’d gone out of his way to make sure she was out of his life as much as he could control.

“Crystal, why are you here?”

“It’s the end of the month. You owe me.” Yahya opened his mouth to respond but found that he couldn’t accurately convey his annoyance. “Can I come in, or do you plan to make this look like a drug deal?”

He didn’t speak as he stepped to the side and allowed his ex-wife to enter his apartment. Crystal took a sweeping look at the place while stepping further into the living room, paying attention to the view from the closed balcony doors.

“This is nice,” she complimented before turning to face him. “You look nice.”

“What happened to our normal 1:30 appointment?”

Crystal laughed and shook her head. “I took the morning off for Kai’s appointment and decided to drop him off with his dad early. You know he lives not too far from here.”

Yahya bristled at the mention of the name he chose for a son he thought was his. Their marriage was riddled with issues shortly after the newlywed bliss ended. He’d forgiven infidelity, but he couldn’t excuse her deception surrounding Kai’s conception. He gave her the best he had during their 18 months as husband and wife. Crystal couldn’t say the same.

“Who told you where I live?”

“Court documents, Babe. They don’t skip a detail.”

“Please, don’t speak to me that way,” he sighed while searching through his messenger back for his checkbook.

“Still polite, I see. Thought you would’ve toughened up by now. Show a little peek of that anger I know you hide.”

“I can start. I’ll put this shit up and call my lawyer right now.”

“There he is!” Crystal began slow applause to taunt Yahya further. “Could’ve used some of that in our marriage. Hell, maybe even during mediation. Would’ve made shit worth it, at least.”

“What the fuck is it with you? I gave you what you asked for from the jump! You wanted to be married; you got it. That expensive ass townhome to keep up with your friends? I busted my ass for it. The car, the ugly ass chihuahua, the dinners with your awful parents? I gave all of it to you and more!”

Recalling his best efforts to please Crystal made his chest tight with anger. All of the emotions he’d been learning to control in therapy sessions were making him unravel at the most inopportune moment.

“I’m making out a check to you right now to help you keep your quality of life because you asked for it! So why…why are you doing this?”

“Because it’s not what I wanted.”

“What?”

Yahya was genuinely baffled. He could pinpoint specific conversations and requests from Crystal about her desires. Now, she was trying to convince him that somehow he was mistaken.

“I wanted to have fun, Yah. Not the fucking Huxtables”, she shouted. “That’s it. I wanted us to be kids still. I wanted us to fuck in parking lots on occasion and make traditions instead of falling into the monotonous bullshit our parents were doing. I wanted a man that offered resistance instead of giving me every fucking thing I wanted!”

“How was I supposed to know that?”

“By talking to me!”

Crystal had revealed her true feelings for the first time. She didn’t even flinch when Yahya asked her to sign divorce papers or shed a tear when proceedings were final. The sight was both a relief and a source of confusion for the former couple.

Taking a breath to control the overflow of emotions, she continued. “You had a vision of what you wanted, and you never asked me if I was on board.”

“I did my best to make you happy. You never told me any different.”

“You never asked.”

Silence hung thick in the air while they considered the actions that had gotten them to their current situation. Had this level of communication existed in their relationship, maybe they’d be having a different early morning conversation.

Crystal was the first to shake off the heaviness of the moment and resume speaking. “Look, I came to tell you that this will be your last payment. I found a job and a buyer for the house. I’ll be out in a few weeks.”

“Good for you.”

“That’s all,” Crystal asked with a dry chuckle.

Yahya silently shook his head and continued to sign his final check. He made a point to allow the paper’s perforated edges to make a ripping noise before handing her the payment.

“That’s it. Please, don’t come here again. My lawyer will contact your team to work out the final arrangements. Make sure they answer the phone the first time. I don’t want to make a trip again. It is terribly inconvenient.”

Crystal stared for a moment, watching her ex-husband to see if his cold exterior would crack as it had before, but it didn’t. And the finality of his words and blank stare shook her internally.

Six months ago, the conversation would’ve ended in hate sex and regret. Today, she had to grab her final connection to him and leave for good. But not without digging at his ego while she still had a chance.

As Crystal walked away, she stopped and pointed at the shoes near the door.

“She’s cute. And she takes beautiful photos. It’ll be a shame when you fuck this one up and disappoint your parents.” Crystal chuckled at her joke and made a move to open the door until she stopped short. “Oh, wait, I’m sorry! I meant when you disappoint your parents again. Father won’t like that, will he?”

“Get out.”

Crystal pretended to concede by throwing her hands up and backing out of the door, but couldn’t contain a smile once Yahya’s phone began buzzing on the counter. She knew he’d have to hold the anger bubbling just beneath his neutral surface.

“You should get that. It could be important.”

Her laughter stuck around long after the soft click of his door left Yahya alone in his apartment. She’d managed to get under his skin again and reopen a wound he thought was closed.

Yahya battled to shake off the range of negative emotions consuming him before answering his phone.

“Babe, are you busy? I’m freaking out.”

Your voice felt like a shock to his system and welcomed distraction all at once. Closing the still open checkbook beside his bag, he took a deep breath to compose himself.

“Not at all. What’s going on?”

Nearby conversations competed with upbeat music in the area, creating the perfect cacophony of background sounds as you took a look at your surroundings. Your eyes lingered on the teenage couple making googly eyes at each other and felt a small smile crack at their innocence. Across the way, a little girl squealed in excitement as the booth attendant handed her a stuffed pig from the winner’s shelf, making you look down at the brown bear in your arms. Though you managed to tone down your celebration a few moments before, you fully understood her happiness. You’d been on the same cloud all evening.

“Cookies and cream in a bowl with an extra scoop for the lady.” Your head turned in time to catch Yahya effortlessly balancing two cups of ice cream while stepping across the picnic table bench. “And a bowl of plain vanilla for me because a little girl started crying and said I was taking too long.”

Your eyes followed Yahya’s not so subtle nod in the offender’s direction, finding her knee-deep in another tantrum at the claw machine.

“Aww, but she’s so cute!”

He scoffed and shook his head, “We gotta work on your definition of cute.”

“Well, I think you’re cute. Is my definition off there or…”

Aww, this was such a cute read. They have such an easy going relationship, it seems so natural for them. I’m a little concerned about her insecurities in regards to how she thinks she’ll disappoint him tho.

The vibes of this chapter was so chill and easygoing. The dialogue between the two was exceptional. I said it before but you’re really good at that, seriously. Now I’m not tryna get hooked on this man, miss. So you’re gonna have stop writing him so well, lol.

It is very natural for them and they complement each other well. She brings out the fun he buries because of work and he keeps here wandering mind on track while reminding her of her passions.

She’s insecure for reasons she can’t even explain. She just doesn’t wanna fuck up even though he’s given her no indication that she has. The brain is powerful.

I only serve the people lmao. Fall for him, but just a little. A teeny bit 😂.

Thanks for reading 💜
