Hey so, I wanted to let your know that I really love your Naruto: Dashing Rescue fic. It's one of my all times fave time travelling fic. I still have the tumblr tag followed lol it's a lil reminder to self to reread whenever I come across it in the 'followed tag' section
I don't ever if you ever confirmed that it's abandoned work or not, I was wondering if you had anything to share about naruto rescue? Maybe your thoughts while writing it or scraps. Maybe not, it's been years also
Anyways, the main purpose was that I wanted to let you know that I really love your writing and a lot of your old works (oh khr too! but esp Dashing Rescue). You were an author that made me smile whenever I see your name as a teen learning about fandoms and searching out fics. I really enjoyed reading a lot of your works!
(Dumb me refresh the page before sending so I had to retype that twice and ahh I realised this got long. My bad)
Wow, that's really nice to hear. I'm glad that you enjoyed those fics! Looking at the dates, it's been almost 10 years since I posted that particular one... hard to believe.
Time travel has always been one of my most favorite fic tropes, and Naruto was really great for those because we had so many time periods, each with their own cast. The possibilities were endless.
For Dashing Rescue, I can see I posted three parts. I dug up my old doc, but there isn't much in it past those. I think I considered part 3 a good stopping point, though it looks like I wrote about a page of part 4 and outlined a few general ideas after that. I'll add that under the cut, in case you're curious.
Aside from that, the only thing I recall is that was using the movies for material and visual inspiration, but that part was probably obvious.
Anyway, thank you again for this really sweet ask. I really appreciate it ^o^
Title: Dashing Rescue
Part IV: Sand and Black Iron
Summary: AU, time travel. Finding himself in the past, Naruto has so far managed to hold back the tide of the Third Shinobi World War. That proves increasingly difficult as the Sandaime Kazekage goes missing.
~.~.~
“Thanks for agreeing to see us, Jiji,” Kushina said, bowing deeply in complete contradiction to her impolite way of addressing the Hokage — she had picked it up from Naruto. Next to her, Minato did the same. Both of them spared a glance at Sakumo, who was also waiting in the Hokage’s office and greeted them with a friendly nod.
“This is about Naruto, isn’t it?” Sarutobi guessed, setting aside his brush to give them both his full attention.
It had been two years since Naruto became an official member of the Uzumaki clan, and thus Konoha. That time had been plenty for the Sandaime to start feeling like he was going grey under his hat.
Especially after Naruto took off for Suna a few months ago and refused to come back, despite the many diplomatically worded but rather displeased messages Sarutobi received from Suna. He just hoped that whatever this was didn’t turn out to be an international incident.
“Yeah,” Kushina said bluntly. “He, uh, sent me a message.”
Or rather, he and Kushina had set about abusing the fact that they held two halves of a single bijuu, which could communicate with each other regardless of distance or circumstances. Kurama had been nothing resembling pleased at being used as an elaborate communication system, but agreed to relay urgent messages in exchange for Kushina changing the form of confinement she used on her half. She still had no idea how Naruto managed to sweet-talk the bijuu into it from his side.
“The Kazekage’s disappeared,” Kushina relayed, “but Naruto thinks he has a lead, and he wants help tracking the person responsible.” He had been increasingly evasive about what exactly he knew or at least suspected, and why, but Kushina didn’t mention that. Naruto got like that sometimes.
Still not used to these sorts of things, especially stated so baldly out of nowhere — the Kazekage, really? — Sakumo choked a little, but quickly swallowed his surprise. The Sandaime simply closed his eyes and sighed. International incident didn’t begin to cover it.
“With the Kazekage has gone missing, it’s naturally a very urgent request,” Minato added. “I might be able to expedite the journey there, if I can be assigned to the team.”
Kushina nodded sharply. “And I can file the mission request for him,” she offered.
“There is no need for that,” Sarutobi said, forcing down the urge to massage the bridge of his nose. “I will offer our services to Suna as a peace gesture.”
“Who will you send?” Sakumo asked, as he finally processed what he had heard.
“Sakumo-sempai, perhaps you could…?” Minato suggested. After all, there was no doubt about who possessed the best tracking skills in the village.
Sakumo shook his head. “That would be a terrible idea. They hate me there,” he summed up. “I was on the Suna front during the Second War, and…”
There was no need to continue. That was where Sakumo gained his fame — and notoriety, upon a path of corpses. He didn’t regret what he had done for Konoha’s sake, but war bred hatred in a vicious cycle. Back then, he had been the same, hating his enemies for what had been done to his comrades and paying back with the same in turn.
“Sending me would be more like a declaration of war than a peace gesture,” Sakumo concluded.
“It would not send the correct message, and would be a complication in itself,” Sarutobi agreed. “Unfortunately, most of the others who would be my second choice are out of the village and won’t be able to return quickly enough. Do you have a recommendation, Sakumo?”
Frowning, the man looked out the window across the village. There was more at stake than first appeared — a situation like this, involving a Kage, no less, could easily deteriorate quickly and violently. So far, they had just barely managed to avoid the outbreak of another war, but the balance was delicate at best. If Suna faltered, it wouldn’t take Iwa long to strike. And then...
On the other hand, this was Konoha’s chance to build a strong alliance with Suna. It would put the Suna council, and possibly even their Kage, in Konoha’s debt. They would be able to present a united front against Iwa, and further strengthen their position with Kumo as well.
A chance to bury the ills of the previous war…
“Kakashi,” Sakumo said, startling the others. “I recommend Kakashi.”
“Sakumo, are you sure?” Sarutobi asked, his brow furrowing as he sat forward and studied his old comrade.
“I’m sure. Kakashi has been a chuunin for four years now. He lacks experience, but his skills are top notch. His nose rivals mine, he’s observant and analytical, and he can call on one of our summons to assist him,” Sakumo explained.
The pride was clear in his voice. Minato, as Kakashi’s jounin teacher, nodded in agreement, though he also still appeared surprised by the choice.
“And… This is our chance to bury the grudges of the past. We have to take the first step. What better way to prove that we trust Suna and are serious about this alliance?” Sakumo smiled. “And I trust Minato and Naruto to keep him safe, should something go wrong.”
“...I won’t let anything happen to him,” Minato promised, recovering first.
Sarutobi took several moments longer to consider the suggestion. Finally, he nodded. “Very well,” he said. “Then I will dispatch Minato and Kakashi to Suna in all haste.”
“What? I want to go too! We’ll be a four-man team then!” Kushina protested.
While Sarutobi tried to think of some subtle way to tell her that the Kyuubi jinchuuriki wasn’t going to be allowed off into a foreign village, which could very well turn unstable at any moment, all without letting Sakumo know the situation, Minato quickly spoke up, “I don’t think I could take you that far,” he said apologetically. “Kakashi and myself will already be difficult…”
Kushina eyed him dubiously. Even though she was one of the few who understood the theoretical underpinnings of Hiraishin, she didn’t have the experience to judge how much and how far Minato could teleport.
Theoretically, Hiraishin’s chakra cost depended on the size and weight of what he was teleporting, though there were some specific caveats regarding distance and the placement of the seals — it all depended on how you went about it.
Kushina was right to distrust him. Minato might have still been able to manage another person, but at least this way there was a legitimate reason for her to stay in Konoha.
But she didn’t call him out on it. “He better come home after this,” she said instead. “It’s been months.”
Minato nodded sharply. “I’ll bring him back once we’re done.” Even if it meant a quick ambush.
“I’ll let Naruto know you’re coming,” Kushina said, and both the young jounin took their leave.
Left alone with Sakumo, Sarutobi shot the other man a considering look. “Are you sure about this?” he asked. “I have no doubt Minato and Naruto will protect him to the best of their ability,” and that ability was really quite impressive, “but you don’t have to risk Kakashi on this. We can send someone else.”
aaaaaa
///////The Third World War was put off, but relations are rough, especially when the Kazekage suddenly goes missing. (Minato is eighteen, Kakashi is ten, and Naruto is twenty one.)
Naruto knows that the true cause is Sasori. He talks to Chiyo and takes off, with Minato and Kakashi following. Chiyo suggested that Sasori would have gone to the old Rouran ruins.
Naruto asks Sakumo to make Konoha into a village that never abandons even one of its people.

Orochimaru is disgraced for his support and participation in the research.

Part V: Rose-tinted Dawn
Summary: AU, time travel.

Nice analysis as always.
I didn't make it through the whole thing, but I want to say that it's somehow not surprising that the MHY fanboys think Archer is the coolest thing ever, but I'm also kinda ?? about them saying that the main thing they took away from UBW was love and justice.
That is not my understanding of UBW. Love and justice would be more fitting for Heaven's Feel, while UBW is more about ideals and self, right? It's the route where the love interest has the least presence (it's not even really Rin's route so much as Archer's, while the MC is Shirou), and while justice is Archer's ideal, his actual focus is more on the ideal part and how it is an ideal he took from Kiritsugu and how it is an impossible one, how this wore him down, and how he has come to hate himself but still cannot hate the ideal per se.
It's also kind of funny in general that Nasu didn't seem to have much to say about Genshin's or HSR's story content aside from HSR being, uh, set up for longterm. Dude didn't even mention a single character that he liked, from what I recall.
The interview between Kinoko Nasu (head writer at Type Moon) and David Jiang (producer Honkai: Star Rail) is quite interesting. Though Jiang is not a writer himself and he himself doesn't get involved in story creation, so I do wonder why he was talking with Nasu...
The interview was mostly about what's taken into account when creating FGO and HSR.
Honkai Star Rail's director is a huge Type-Moon fanboy and has always been influenced by the Fate series since he was a teenager - even/especially in Star Rail, while Nasu plays Genshin Impact and is currently playing the Belobog chapter in Star Rail.
And yes. Clara and Svarog are a reference to Illya and Berserker, we been knew.
There was some interesting commentary early on from Jiang that said that the story-writing and gameplay divisions worked separately, which caused issues early on that needed to be resolved. Receiving confirmation about this is interesting, because it would explain a lot of the issues present in Genshin Impact that are mostly absent in HSR - a world that feels totally divorced from the playable characters that live in it, and - up until Fontaine - a lot of playable characters feeling somewhat disconnected from the plot they're meant to be in.
It was also very interesting to see Jiang start talking about marketing, surveys, meeting modern trends, design vs generating revenue etc. versus Nasu talking about his thoughts as an author and the importance of prioritising your ideal creative vision even if you end up needing to take those things into account as well... and how FGO doesn't incorporate modern trends but instead tries to create something that will be meaningful to the players.
It was also extremely funny seeing Nasu talk about how meta wasn't an important factor in FGO (true) - he just wanted people to care about the characters, and Jiang going "oh yeah we do that too!" ...like a liar.
Something Nasu said in response to Jiang talking about how the character designers at HYV take surveys or add character elements that they think 'might attract a new user group' into consideration struck a chord with me though;
Nasu-sensei: This reminds me of an interview I read about "Street Fighter II," where the interviewer asked, "Why did the game include a character like Zangief?" And the response from the interviewee was, "Once you have a character like Zangief for comparison, characters like Ryu with an average physique become even more eye-catching." In other words, a creative work cannot only have popular characters. If we make a fetish black hole, the diversity of the world suffers.. In terms of results, even protagonist-like characters that are somewhat lacking in personality can have their own unique features.
Which speaks to an understanding of a need for variety in design and personality that HYV consistently fails to achieve. HYV has no characters like Blackbeard, Zhang Jue... or even Li Shuwen. It has pretty girls, pretty boys, and younger characters.
Jiang talked proudly about how HSR risks lowering their revenue by daring to include characters like Qingque and Guinafen in the hopes they might attract a new market, but Nasu says 'well, we think about the themes of our stories and what the characters need to be, as well as the kinds of characters we want to write'.
Nasu also plainly outlining the variety of different elements a writer needs to incorporate into a story - including the importance of each character having their own storyline to engage the players, super simple stuff! - is something I dearly hope HYV keeps in mind. HSR has less of an issue with these concepts than Genshin does, but there are several shared weaknesses between the two works.
I can only hope that HYV is taking notes instead of nodding like it already understands the things he's saying - because it does not, and it could stand to listen. I believe that the world Nasu created in Fairy Britain, despite having a lot less to it, is stronger than any single region in either Genshin Impact or Honkai Star Rail because it, the stories told in it and the characters there, are all thematically consistent and inform each other in interesting ways at all points during the chapter.
I think Belobog achieved a base level of cohesion, but Xianzhou Luofu was a shitshow and Penacony... better pick up soon. Haha. (Jiang describing Xianzhou Luofu as "captivating" though. Bro. Bro Xianzhou Luofu was terrible, what are you talking abou-)
I like reading Nasu talk about the writing process and the things he's enthusiastic about. I don't always like or agree with Type-Moon's decisions or products, but Nasu always strikes me as a down to earth guy that's truly passionate about what he creates and the works he consumes. Jiang seems to have had a lot less to say, though that seems to be because he is... as he himself admits, not a writer.
The two companies seem to have been in talks, so I'm curious to see what comes of it.

Roundup of manhwa I've been catching up on and/or rereading recently. These are unfortunately mostly on Asura Scans, so linking or bookmarking them is useless. I really hate that about their site.
The scores are in regard to what I expect of the overall genre, not general quality per se. I'm not expecting deep, profound writing here. The range is A to F, with A being an easy recommend, B having some flaws but also having some really strong points that make it worth reading, C being extremely average, not terrible but not really doing anything well enough to recommend, and D being largely a waste of time. F is for outright offensive. But there won't really be many failing grades on this list because I just drop them and forget lol. Plus minus is based on my personal enjoyment.
Return of the Disaster-Class Hero, ch74 - Rank: B+. I really enjoyed it, but it's just that the different aspects are overall passable to good (art, humor, battles), plus it has some presence given to supporting characters (Hugo, Sungjae) and relationships, which I happen to enjoy. Additionally, the story actually advances, which can't be taken as a given lol... Unfortunately, the manhwa has been on hiatus since Aug 2023 due to the artist's health and later passing. It's unclear whether it will continue, or how it will look or progress if it does.
The Novel's Extra, ch93 - Rank: C. I was initially going to rank it higher, but while the art is nice and the characters are passable, the pacing is a mess. I genuinely couldn't tell you what the direction of the story is even supposed to be, despite how many chapters it's been. Have we even advanced at all here? I sure don't know.
The Protagonist's Younger Sister, ch33 - Rank: B, though this notably has the lowest chapter count here by a wide margin. Cute story and I like the protagonist family. It's just that it has always updated very slowly, and I'm not even sure it's still updating, so the pacing feels dragged out even if it's actually fine as a whole. But like I mentioned separately, the story has only just passed basic setup, so I don't even know for sure where it's going in the long term.
SSS-Class Suicide Hunter, ch113 - Rank: A. If I have to pick a manhwa I consider most overall impressive among those I've read, it would probably be this one. It has a very strong sense of its protagonist and what it wants to say, and it uses very distinctive arcs with strong supporting characters to do it. The murim arc was obviously a standout, but I think the romance genre arc that is wrapping up was impressive in what it dared to do. They really said "yeah, the protag falls in love and gets married, this is part of his growth as a person." I genuinely did not expect that they would go through with it and let him actually stay married. That's a thing they did. In general, this is just a very solid story, and I hope they are able to adapt it in its entirety, though that will probably take years to come.
I’m a Martial Art Villainess but I’m the Strongest!, ch92 - Rank: B. This one has a female lead (and thus a prominent romance) but it also does a lot of fight scenes and training and stuff like that. The fairly unusual (in my experience) combination of elements works well for me, though the actual contents are fairly average, nothing amazing or terrible, just okay enough. I think my biggest take away aside from the genre combination is the ML's big boobas. I seriously want the MC and ML to bang, they deserve it.
Ending Maker, ch56 - Rank: B. Actually, this one hasn't had any progress since I caught up on the TLs a while back, but I wanted to note it. I like how much focus is given to the relationship between the MC and his love interest, and I don't really have any major complaints. However, I hope they're able to flesh out the plot going forward. It's been very "go to a place, get a thing" without really giving any major weight to anything that's happened, and the supporting characters haven't really left an impression either.
The Duke's Redemption, ch50 - Rank: B-. This one also hasn't updated since I caught up on it a while back, but adding here. Pros: strong focus on the relationship between the MC and the duke, setup for potentially interesting conflict with Serpens not being chosen as the hero per the OG plot. Cons: art is kinda mid, the actual story so far has been largely filler or not very interesting in and of itself. They've built up the foundation of Shion and Serpens as a relationship, but the stuff around that could have been done a lot better.
Doctor's Rebirth, ch150 - Rank: C+, though that's being generous tbh. It is the definition of extremely mid. However, it does make me lol at least somewhat regularly about how gay the entire supporting cast is toward the MC. Truly peak shounen experience. Whether it's his master, his master's assistant (love triangle), the original novel's demonic hero protag, secondary novel villains A through D... they all want him so bad. It's very funny to me personally.
The Extra is Too Strong, ch50 - Rank: D+. I'm adding the plus purely because I spend a lot of time lolling about how buff absolutely everyone is. This includes the one notable female side character and background female characters. That aside, I'm curious what they're going to do with the original novel's protag. He's mentioned several times and with quite a bit of detail about what his deal was, plus he has a non-standard design, so I feel like we will eventually meet him and something is planned for that.
Return of the 8th Class Magician, ch81 (complete) - Rank: C. I know there's other series with a very similar title, so to be clear, this is the one where the MC has long light brown hair (lol) and regresses uses dragon tongue. A complete story that has no particular flaws, but tbh I don't think it has any particular strengths either. The thing I remember most about it is that, around chapter 60 or so, there is a note from the artist that directly says they're about to start deviating from the novel they're adapting. Immediately the main villain is introduced, dragon lore gets updated, and the MC's father is brought up, so you can just tell, yeah, his father is going to be a dragon. And he is. I didn't have any issues with the manhwa-original (presumed) ending, it was done more smoothly than I would have expected, but the whole story just didn't serve anything to make me really excited. Fine read tho, if you've got some time to kill, and the MC is quite pretty.
Trash of the Count’s Family, ch121 - Rank: C. The art is nice, and I liked the initial sections, but the pacing is a mess and nothing meaningful seems to happen. The biggest issue is probably that the MC is just not a type I care for, and the supporting characters don't feel like they're fleshed out enough to stand on their own. The entire story, with over a hundred chapters, has been just endlessly picking up power-ups in preparation for the supposed war, but 120 chapters in and we're still not to the actual war, so... I do think that I'm finally seeing the appeal of the crown prince, so there's that.
The Newbie is Too Strong, ch90 - Rank: C-. This is also a pretty basic series, but the popoi are cute, the MC doesn't annoy me, and I am legitimately interested in the plot mysteries. Also, it does seem to be promising to introduce some recurring side characters in the future, so there is some room to grow.
Overpowered Sword, ch88 - Rank: C. It's a shounen, functionally. I enjoy it in a brain off way, and I will say that I first shipped Leon with Eclid, but now I keep thinking that Karen is good, I ship Karen. However, it has a weakness in that the arcs aren't particularly interesting in themselves. Not enough emphasis on fucked up backstories for the villains and new allies, I guess. Shounen runs on fucked up backstories.
Of All Things, I Became a Crow, ch107 (complete) - Rank: C+. This is a female lead transmigration romance. It's cute! I like it well enough and it's complete. Not really a lot else to say.

And here is the actual sunken build. It's very simple, but at least the chaining and sinking worked.
For my future reference, the anchor block was at 25.0 height for the chaining and the set with it was at 14.0 for the sinking.

Looking at the records, I haven't finished Arena of Champions since December. The new cards were too depressing.
This patch brings Neuvillette and also all the stuff screwing over action cards, which is also not very fun, but I managed to get a clear using Kokomi and cubes. Ability to freeze, revive endlessly and do a bunch of AOE damage with cryo cube managed to squeeze through just barely.
I got it from a Youtube video :)
Funny moments include:
one guy who rage quit by making his timer run out repeatedly, but joke's on him, I'm doing this in windowed mode, so I can just do something else while waiting
getting two of my characters swirl frozen twice against that one YT Xiao deck
Forgetting about Kirara's burst, getting a cube killed, losing
The deck:

New spiral abyss... I ended up getting a really clean 3 stars on the last chamber, so I decided to do the other two as well.
The most annoying parts:
Hyperbloom team kept getting killed by the husk knight squad. (Conversely, freeze takes care of them so well, absolutely amazing.)
The operative pair in the first chamber are resistant to freeze, so they actually unfreeze in the middle of Ayaka's burst and get sent flying in opposite directions. They also constant dash around. Grouping them is a goddamn nightmare.
Which is why I ultimately resorted to Venti and C6 Faruzan, since her skill procs also keep them CC'd in the short down time between Venti bursts.
In retrospect, I could have probably used the Navia team on the second half all the way through, since her damage is no joke, and this would have freed Xingqiu for the first half, especially in chamber one. I actually have very few hydro options, so this might have been really useful. Ah well, for next cycle, I suppose.

And one last time. The only difference is that I've switched out Kirara for DMC, since I switched Lumine from Anemo to Dendro. Kuki's healing and Xingqiu's damage and interrupt resist are enough for defensive utility here.
Next Abyss reset will have new enemies, including the local legends. It'll be a mess for sure, so I'll just go back to 6 starring.

The evil is defeated. After a year, I have achieved vengeance against the Wenut.
As always, elemental reactions are too complicated for me, so I ended up using mono geo on one side and mono pyro on the other. Bless Yoimiya, obvs Bennett+Xiangling did a lot, but Yoimiya also carried.
Anyway, 4.5 Abyss looks ultra disgusting, so I'm gonna go back to 6 starring floor 12.

Re-read "The Protagonist's Younger Sister" up to the current TLs (ch33).
I wish it updated faster because I am so curious about where it's going. There's got to be some spanner in the works, since everything so far has been largely setup of the siblings' family situation.
Just noting for myself a few characters who have been mentioned but not seen so far:
Kim Hyuk, mentioned twice and had a chibi. iirc he's someone who vanished and then returned, like the eldest brother, and awakened as a hunter.
Han Hyeonwoo, the Battle Alchemist. He's the boss of Four Seasons, the guild that Bobae works for.
He was shown with another guy at one point, who had long pale hair, who I think might have been their guild's strongest hunter? Not very clear.
The Sword God / Blade Master has been mentioned a few times.
Also, eldest brother is Lee Lee Gwihan, second brother is Lee Haegi, and third brother is Lee Hanseng (Farsein de Chekiving). The sister is Lee Bobae, though her brothers also call her "Maknae" (youngest). They don't call each other by name all that much, so it's pretty easy to lose track.

Regarding the Konoha 12, Kishimoto tried to circle back to them during the 4th arc.
Choji had some spotlight when Asuma got brought back with Edo Tensei, and the entire group was highlighted as "coming into their own" when the... statue was rampaging I think? They also tended to have a lot of short cutaways to them during the duration of the arc, like showing their lotus eater dreams, or stuff like Ino's and Shikamaru's dads getting killed, or just showing them in the middle of big changes to the whole battlefield.
People really latched on to them in Chuunin Exams and the Sasuke retrieval arc, and Kishimoto did continue to use them as a kind of "bystander" characters to fill out scenes or portray what it going on outside the Naruto-Sasuke stuff. Plus, some of them had a lot of focus for various reasons (Shikamaru, Hinata), and kind of served to elevate the entire group.
I showed a friend your reponse to my big ask and they said you forgot to add that in Naruto there was the Konoha 12 that everyone loved. Like them or hate them they were the main characters who each got their own moment (I disagree a little but the point still stands). They had their own fights and little arcs. In Boruto there's none of that. Even the kids of Shikamaru and the others are just not relevant in Boruto at all. All that matters is Boruto and Kiwaki and they're detrimental to the manga.
Hmm... I kind of get where they're coming from, but excluding Team 7, most of the Konoha 12 have been largely irrelevant background characters for quite a long time.
Characters like Kiba and Choji haven't had a day in the spotlight since as early as the Sasuke Retrieval Arc, and I believe Shino's last major point of relevance was.... god, Orochimaru's invasion of Konoha back in the Chuunin Exams, when he fought Kankuro?
A lot of the content that we got for the Konoha 12 were filler arcs, and most of that was in the latter half of part 1's anime. Some of the K12 didn't get arcs at all, actually. IIRC, the real standouts were Neji, Rock Lee, Shikamaru and to a lesser extent Ino and Hinata.
And that was before Naruto's cast size exploded in part 2.
I get why the K12 are deprioritised in Boruto - again, theoretically you're going to want to focus on the new generation, not the parents... but it's sounding like there isn't even an attempt at using them the way early Naruto did (Chuunin Exams, Konoha Crush, Sasuke Retrieval), which is very disappointing.
I do have to wonder if it's annoying to have to use them given how similar they are to their parents, though. If you have a Nara, an Akamichi and Inojin with the exact same powers as Shikamaru, Choji and Sai, semi-similar personalities and they all have to be relatively well-adjusted kids with happy lives because they're the kids of Naruto characters so they had comfortable childhoods with loving parents... That's way less interesting than 'dude i made up that I can do whatever i want with'.
Like, it would drive me insane to have those restrictions put on me, I'd want to make up OCs as soon as I could too. Again, it doesn't sound like it was handled well at all, but I can see why that might have happened.
See? This is why we should've just adopted a bunch of orphans after the war. They could have whatever powers you wanted and all kinds of different tragic backstorie-

tbh I don't think the issues with Boruto necessarily stem from any negative opinions toward Naruto on the part of the creators. tbh I don't think there's that much thought and passion going into it to begin with lol
My understanding of some of these points:
The kicker is that Kishimoto, from what I've heard has not been that active in Boruto. His editor pretty much runs the show is what I have heard a lot.
The Boruto manga was not made by Kishimoto to begin with, I think this was known from the start? I believe its creator was one of Kishimoto's old assistants. In fact, there was a bit of a splash when, several years into it, Kishimoto stepped in and supposedly took over.
From wiki: It initially began monthly serialization under the title Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, with Kodachi as writer and Kishimoto as editorial supervisor in Shueisha's shōnen manga magazine Weekly Shōnen Jump in May 2016, and was transferred to Shueisha's monthly magazine V Jump in July 2019. In November 2020, Kodachi stepped down, with Kishimoto taking over as writer.
it goes out of its way to shit on the Naruto series (taking away Naruto and Sasuke's power-ups at the first chance which basically reverted them to beginning of Naruto, Naruto and Sasuke).
Given that Naruto and Sasuke are basically god-level by the end of the OG series, this was always going to have to happen in some form. I don't think this can be used as indication of anything in particular, aside from the writer not being terribly imaginative.
They just really don't like Naruto as a series because: [...] They hate ninjas because everything is now aliens and machinery in Boruto. Also, a lot of retconning Naruto stuff to be oh aliens are the reason this exists.
Kishimoto did that to OG Naruto, honestly. Once he escalated to aliens with Kaguya, there wasn't really any walking back, and Boruto is generally following the trend from there. Additionally, Kishimoto also started leaning toward the tech thing himself as well, with stuff like zoom conference calls in late-stage 4th war arc, and then Naruto epilogue having laptops, etc.
Orochimaru is just there and no one remembers he's not to be trusted.
Kishimoto did this one too. Orochimaru got weirdly whitewashed way back halfway into the 4th war, when he suddenly returned from the dead as Sasuke's weirdly dependable plot device ally, and Kishimoto just never bothered dealing with him after that, so he just... made it out of the war with no consequences at all.
The general trend really does seem to be that Kishimoto started all these issues, and Boruto is just a rather bland natural outgrowth of the direction the last parts of Naruto took. I would even say that the characters going in the direction we get was set up by Kishimoto as well.
That doesn't make it enjoyable, and Boruto is not in any shape or form good at what it's trying to do, but the writing was on the wall even before it started, imo.
"Here's 40 episodes of Kakashi and Itachi in ANBU" or something, I don't know. I'd watch 10 episodes of Sasori's descent into absolute madness.
The anime fillers did this. There's also an entire Itachi novel that is... hm, not good. This kind of thing was basically handled in smaller spinoffs, so the real cashcow did need to be a more open-ended new generation thing that could be milked indefinitely.
So if you want a real answer for went wrong in Boruto let me explain.
Boruto is pretty much written by people who really don't like Naruto as a series because it goes out of its way to shit on the Naruto series (taking away Naruto and Sasuke's power-ups at the first chance which basically reverted them to beginning of Naruto, Naruto and Sasuke). The editor for Boruto is apparently a simp for Sadara. They just really don't like Naruto as a series because:
He's apparently just a missing dad but you probably knew this already.
Absolutely no respect for Naruto characters whatsoever.
They hate ninjas because everything is now aliens and machinery in Boruto. Also, a lot of retconning Naruto stuff to be oh aliens are the reason this exists.
Orochimaru is just there and no one remembers he's not to be trusted.
There's apparently a dimension where one of the villains just has multiple ten-tails clones in there and its weird.
So yeah... I don't even want to know what the fuck happened. The kicker is that Kishimoto, from what I've heard has not been that active in Boruto. His editor pretty much runs the show is what I have heard a lot.
The most I've seen of Boruto was the movie, where Naruto being an absent parent was solved because Boruto just didn't realise how cool his dad was... I think. I just kinda left that movie gobsmacked. Don't you see how cool your dad is Boruto. And also 'jutsu in a can' is illegal in the Chuunin exams for some reason? Literally why, they're a tool you can use...
Thanks for the response, I appreciate the insight. I can see how some of these problems might have come around, like trying to balance Naruto and Sasuke's absolutely absurd power levels against literally any kind of threat, or coming up with an enemy for Konoha to fight that wouldn't leave a black mark on Naruto's reign as Hokage... and the inherent issue of 'no one is watching this for the new characters, they want to see the old ones, but this isn't about them' you'll inevitably get with a next-gen sequel.
No one watched Boruto the movie for Boruto. No one.
But like... why make a next-gen sequel for Naruto of all series? I get why from a 'we want money' sense, but I feel they could've just animated the light novels or fillers into eternity and people would've been happier with those.
"Here's 40 episodes of Kakashi and Itachi in ANBU" or something, I don't know. I'd watch 10 episodes of Sasori's descent into absolute madness.
Maybe the reason they went "ALIENS" is because of Kishimoto's failed sci-fi manga? But it's weird he's hands off given I thought he took over the manga from someone else...
Btw, to add onto what the anon that sent the I gave up on Boruto ask, its a bigger problem than it being the typical female characters don't matter still in Boruto. Its that no one matters in Boruto except Boruto and Kiwaki. Everyone else just gets shit on. Like imagine the old Naruto is x fanfics but actually made real. That's Boruto. He's got everything and he's the bestest and specialest boy.
:/ That sucks. Why bother forcing so many pairings to produce kids if you don't even wanna use 'em. Sasuke didn't deserve this. But also, how are you simultaneously a simp for Sarada and don't really use her? Just shove her in stupid outfits and call it a day...?
I still don't know anything about Kawaki!? He's a moon boy too, right? It feels so weird to neglect the rest of Boruto's team, though. What's the point.
Boruto does really feel like an edgy OC. He's got Byakugan+1 AND Sasuke is his teacher... honestly, Sasuke as a mentor to Naruto's kid is cute in theory, except for the part where he's also a deadbeat dad to a whole other child (his own).
I couldn't help reading TBV thinking "...why didn't they just do this kind of plot with Naruto himself or something". Though I guess they kind of? Did? With Road To Ninja? The opposite direction?
Btw, unless I'm mistaken I don't think Naruto actually forgave Orochimaru. I think he just forgot because Kishimoto forgot about a lot of what happened in part 1 of Naruto except Sasuke imo.
Incredible.

Second go at this enemy line up for the bi-monthly refresh. I ended up having to do the last chamber with the Wenut team because I accidentally completed it at like 6:58 on my hyperbloom run and didn't want to redo everything leading up to it.
Since the blessing this time is for plunge, I used Xiao on the first half. It was... an experience. Obviously the damage is fine, but it's so hard to tell what's going on. I think I only kind of started understanding how to group enemies by the time I finished this run. Also, the camera pan on Jean's burst is actually really annoying when you just want to switch to her, burst, and swap out immediately.

Finished one of these deep sinking floating pavilion type builds. It's hard to get good screenshots tho.
It was created through grid chaining, which worked easier than I had expected, though I think I made things needlessly fussy by making the anchor foundation part of the build itself. When I added things around it, that made selecting it a bit annoying.
However, I'm pretty satisfied.

Had the urge to catch up on "Return of the Disaster-Class Hero" (dang, these manhwa titles are really...). Asura scans is up to chapter 74.
Since I didn't remember the details and also because I was composing fanfics in my head, I actually started from the beginning again. I think the story made more sense this time around, maybe because I was paying more attention. Nothing like fanfic thoughts to make you process the story better lol
This might be obvious, but the reason I had a stronger impression of this one than most is because of the shipping potential. Giving the overpowered MC a close (male) friend who is around the entire time and has a big focus in some events helps makes things more interesting to me, hehe. Hugo also happens to be my second favorite type, blond with flame theme. Jokes aside, he gets treated more roughly than I would prefer, but he was also given far more dignity and priority in the Blood Fog business than I had dared hope, so it balances out.
Regarding the plot, they move at a fairly good clip. By ch74, some major plot threads have been resolved, a main villain (whether final boss or not) has started to move, and they even directly acknowledge that Lee Geon is somehow an actual god, not just a super powerful human. The only really big mystery that's still basically untouched is the nature of the "unknown civilization" that spawns the calamities.
The Lee Geon god plot point is a bit... hm. It is presented in a consistent way, to the point that you're going to be aware of it way before the characters acknowledge it, so I can't say it's poorly handled, but it also creates some issues with the power scaling and it also just feels like a bit too much "he is the coolest ever" shilling that I necessary care for. I don't hate it, but I don't love it either.
Aside from that, it was interesting finally seeing Hayley, since I vaguely recall reading something about her from novel spoilers ages ago. I can definitely see how she'd be very popular, but I don't really care for her role so far. She's also just introduced too late for me to really get attached.
Overall, it's a shame there's like, a dozen fanfics only and none are a standout epic AU type. I feel like I have walked off the beaten path, and I don't know how to live like this.

I have now tried two more gachas out of curiosity.
First, Reverse 1999. There wasn't anything specifically wrong with it, but I felt like the concept was too... hm, "abstract" for my personal tastes, with all the time in reverse, normal people losing memories, etc business. Gave me back flashbacks to Third Birthday and some poorly used timetravel twists. Additionally, the dialogue felt hard to follow at times (I suspect but only on a hunch that the translation was a bit suspect), which is mostly whatever in simple stories but is potentially a huge issue for a story that's already hard to understand.
So I ruthlessly uninstalled it. Not a quality judgement, but it just doesn't seem worth effort of progressing when it's likely just not my thing.
Second, Love and Deepspace. I saw a fanart and then another mention of it, so I decided to try too. Now this one has two issues. First, I don't really care for its visuals. I don't like the pseudo-realistic 3D and never have, plus the models just have way too many small movements. Why are you so jittery? Are you jello? Stop wiggling. Potentially more annoying is that this is partially voice game, and you cannot turn off the voice acting. Worse, you cannot advance any dialogue until the voice acting is done. So you can't go through the story faster than the set speed of what are basically cutscenes where you need to the tap the screen once every five minutes or so. This also happens in the voice calls, which is like... who asked... Not helping all this is the huge bloat of menus and subsystems that get dumped on you pretty much immediately after the 20 minutes or so of solid cutscene to start.
I haven't uninstalled it yet, but unless I am feeling way more charitable the next time I get around to it, that's probably also where it's going.
This are honestly pretty uncharitable takes, since I definitely put way more patience into FGO and Genshin, but eh. Eeeeeeh.
