Such a small detail that didn't even need to be included if this were a lesser anime. A quiet scene, a moment of gratitude without words from a woman who didn't think she still wanted to live and the woman who saved her.

Something I really like about Frieren is it feels like they really put thought into how a near-immortal might actually act. She sleeps in and takes it easy because time doesn't matter to her. She's in no rush for anything. She obsessively pursues something for months that caught her attention on a whim. She seems exhausted by the fast pace her companions want to take. She's jaded by natural phenomena because she has a million more in her future. She's not concerned by something like being thrown in prison. She takes everything in stride. She has silly little hobbies that keep her going - I guess you must when you've got that much time on your hands.
Her behavior confused me at first, but I think it makes sense in context (interestingly, I think Fern had a similar journey from not getting it, to understanding the way Frieren thinks). And it makes it that much more meaningful when she puts aside things that she would normally do in favor of enjoying her time with her companions and trying to be present for their lives, short though those lives may be.

every flashback moment between frieren and himmel
frieren: himmel why are we doing this
himmel: why else? because i am strong and sexy and smart and my cock is tremendous
frieren: i'm leaving
himmel: BUT ALSO... because life is fleeting... and every moment we spend together is a precious treasure...
frieren: [stares wistfully]
frieren, present day: he was the best human being ever, and there is not a moment that i don't miss him

It's honestly so fucked up that there is a Himmel statue in every single town that Frieren visits, that kind of love is so heartbreaking and pure and comforting. He wanted to comfort her and be remembered and take care of her even in death. And it hurts so much that they have to separated by death, but it's also, it doesn't matter that he's dead, his feelings for her surpassed his lifetime. Whenever you see a Himmel statue, it's like he's right there anyway, so there is no opportunity to grieve him because he's right there and he cares so much.

Sometimes family is you (a 1000+ year old elf), your dead boyfriend, a drunk priest, said drunk priest's adopted daughter who wakes you up and dresses you every morning, a dwarven warrior, said dwarven warrior's apprentice who believes he's a coward despite all evidence to the contrary, and a completely different priest (this one loves milfs) who you haven't seen for 70 chapters because he's searching for his boyfriend.
