ユキ Yuki = Snow ; Mayu explained where the name come from in one of the episodes.

まゆ Mayu = there are so many ways to write her name. It could be 繭, 麻由, 真由, 真優... etc.etc. There are so many. So I won't be able to provide a meaning without seeing the Kanji

兎山悟 (Toyama Satoru)

兎山 (Toyama) = Rabbit + Mountain

悟 Satoru = The name 悟 (Satoru) itself means "to learn the truth"

It is important to note that: the character 悟 is often associated with understanding, comprehension, acknowledgement, or realization of something.

From just reading the meaning, the name feels very "intellectual" or "brainy"! But!! It is a "Heart" word.

The character 悟 is composed of a heart as a Radical. So when we use this word, it's more about understanding, or realization from the heart.

Common vocabulary with the character 悟: 覚悟 Kakugo = preparedness , readiness

大福 (Daifuku)

If we separate 大福 into two words, it's "big" "fortune / happiness",

But Daifuku is actually a popular Japanese confection that is often red bean paste wrapped in mochi. They are soft, fluffy, sweet, and round. So we can definitely see where Daifuku got the name!

Important note about Daifuku

I watched a couple episodes with friends with subtitles and realized Daifuku has been referred as “he”

I probably need to comb from episode 1 to confirm, but I watch Precure without subtitles (since I’m fluent) and I do not recall Satoru actually confirming Daifuku’s gender in Japanese 🤔

It might be correct but I don’t want to assume the eyelash is what determines their binary gender 😂

My short precure wishlist 🙏

I've been watching precure series since I was a young teen. Although I wouldn't say I watched every single episode, and know absolutely everything. I'd say I have watched a decent amount to make a vague wishlist :D

I hope...

There would be a season where they embrace "darkness" as a positive / essential concept.

Something like Go! Princess Precure where Cure Flora said despair is part of life, and if there's no despair, there is no hope. Would be cool to see something like that again! Or even have a precure that is darker / colder colors.

Wonderful Precure Civilian name Translation

Kyuura here, excited to translate all the new information on the website

As usual, I will explain cultural background, context, literal translation and something more than just Google can teach you!

Civilian Name Translation and Explanation

犬飼 (Inukai)

As we have noticed, both Komugi and Iroha shares the same last name!

Inukai in general, can be literally translated to "Dog Keeper"

Inu 犬　simply means "Dog"

Kai 飼　is a character commonly use when you talk about keeping a pet. The word "飼" itself means to feed animals and to nurture life.

So when you put the two characters 犬飼 together. We can see the meaning is more or less "Dog keeper", or even more literal translation, "Dog Feeder / Dog Nurturer"

Extra info: The word 飼 is composed of the word EATING (食) and it's a character with heavy meaning of food and feeding.

Komugi こむぎ

Komugi simply means wheat. It's a very common pet name in Japan!

Iroha いろは

Without the Kanji, it's actually quite hard to tell what Iroha means, BUT! Iroha is actually a common girl name and it means "Colorful leaves" or "Colorful feathers"

You might have heard the words Niji-iro (虹色) or Iroiro (色々)

Iro (色) itself means "Color", but when it's used in the name Iroha, it turns into 彩, which is still pronounced IRO, but it means COLORFUL.

With Cure Friendy's Catchphrase being "A world colored by everyone's smile! Cure Friendy! Let me hear your voice", I am quite certain Iroha's name is about colors.

We will probably never know what the "HA" part means without the kanji. Ha is more commonly "leaves". It could be "feathers". Even "flowers"

The word IROHA does have the meaning "The basics, the fundamentals", and without the kanji, we will never know if the name is trying to play with some puns or what not.

But when the name IROHA is placed on a girl, it 99% means "colorful-(something)"

The name Cure Wonderful makes sense now...

In Japanese , Wonderful is pronounced "Wan-da-furu"

"Wan" is the equivalent for the word "Bark" in English - the sound that dogs make.

This pairs up with Cure Nyammy, because"Nya" is "Meow" in English!

Wonderful Precure may contain nursery themes

kyuura here just doing some speculation. I suspect wonderful precure may contain nursery themes due to how the logo is designed. Here’s why!

Unlike ALL the other precure seasons we had, Wonderful Precure is wholly written in Hiragana (ぷりきゅあ) instead of the usual プリキュア in Katakana

If you are not familiar with the Japanese language. There are two ways in writing Japanese alphabets: Hiragana and Katakana

To put it in a simple analogy with English language…Hiragana is kind of like the basic ABC’s, while Katakana is the ‘capital letters’ (sorry this is the only way I can explain it)

I describe Katakana as “capital letters” because Katakana is usually used in special circumstances such as non-Japanese names, or non-Japanese words.

Words such as Ice-cream (アイスクリーム), bus (バス), orange (オレンジ)… a lot of words that are basically English written in Japanese phonetics. They are all written in Katakana. Names like Mary (マリー), Johann (ヨハン), Candy (キャンディ) etc etc. Basically if the word is not a Japanese word, it’s very likely it will be written in Katakana.

プリキュア (precure) has always, always been written in Katakana for all these 20+ years.

Therefore, the FULL Hiragana title, Wonderful Precure really stands out because “Wonderful Precure”, both words being non-Japanese words, a special title / name, would be more proper if written in Katakana: ワンダフルプリキュア

Hiragana is the ‘baby language’. Hiragana is the first thing children learn in school. In fact, lot of children books are actually strictly written in Hiragana even some words aren’t supposed to be written in Hiragana.

(The pictures above do have some Katakana but the Katakana words are always accompanied by Hiragana as a note on the side just in case children are still learning how to read Katakana. But… you get my point!)

So with Wonderful Precure written in full Hiragana… there might be a nursery theme going on !!

In fact, Wonderful Precure’s logo is all written in Hiragana! (ぷりきゅあ) versus Katakana (the regular プリキュア)

I think this is the first time Precure Logo is wholly written in Hiragana. In children’s books, everything tend to be written in Hiragana. Heck, the game Animal Crossing actually is very heavy on Hiragana!!

Hiragana is like the ABC kindergartener first learn in their language. And when a written material are all written in Hiragana, the reader can generally feel and understand the intended audience is for children.

So actually, I think it’s intended. And Wonderful Precure may actually have a nursery theme to it.

We will see though :)

“The new precure logo looks childish.”

And HiroPre wasn’t???

That season was episodic and lacking in a consistent narrative. It was intentionally that way. It was by design.

Koji Ogawa, the director himself, said he didn’t want HiroPre to have dark themes or villain interactions.

And regardless of how you feel about HiroPre, it was, by all accounts, very, very light-hearted.

So can we at least try to wait until the new season is airing before we pass judgement on its quality? Precure is a kids’ franchise first and foremost - being “childish” has and will never be to its detriment.

In fact, “Wonderful Precure” being “childish” can be to its strength (check Tropical Rouge). Or it might even throw us for a loop with more mature theming (check Smile).
