"I look after about 700 olive trees around the valley. But I and others with groves have lost about 70% of them in the past five years. Some were taken by settlers; others have just been made impossible to cultivate.

These are our groves on our ancestral land, but we have to get permits from the Israeli authorities to nurture them and pick. Believe it or not, during last autumn’s olive harvesting, in some of my groves I was given permission to pick for only two days when it needed two weeks.

The day we started – 1 November – the settlers began their attacks. The next day I went to look to find that they had uprooted trees – some hundreds of years old. Others were cut down to their trunks with the olive branches taken."

idk i think it says a lot that the ppl living through a genocide are posting, taking videos, scrambling to safehouses to find an internet connection to join international broadcasts, giving interviews while grieving, and half of the progressives/liberals in the west have maxxed out at "it's so complicated it's so sad im going to take a mental health vow of silence"

i am truly never interested in emotionally blackmailing anyone to post (i am determined to make sure people KNOW all they have to do is post and that it's important and needed). i also recognize some people may face personal and financial backlash, and others are more concerned with in-person action and organizing than an online campaign. i am not interested in guilting anyone so if this doesn't apply to you then this doesn't apply to you

but it doesn't seem normal that this isn't one or two people i've noticed, this feels like an empirical trend of progressives. its many many people who are posting about hobbies and cute pet videos like the world hasn't stopped for the rest of us, like their feelings are somehow too complex to be expressed on mere social media, who are no longer engaging with any of it after a few token words of "ugh everything is so awful." rn people are not only countering a media blackout from gaza and trying to assist the journalists fighting to report from the worst and most dangerous circumstances journalists have EVER reported from but also having to fight the war of narratives that israel has declared upon "human animals" and "children of darkness" and it just feels. very deeply telling

i believe israeli politicians and media personalities mean it when they say gaza should be flattened, destroyed and ethnically cleansed. i believe they mean it when they say there is no reason to distinguish between hamas militants and civilians. i believe this is their real position and i believe that their statements apply to hospitals in gaza

just saw a video compilation of makeup tiktokers showing their makeup with the lights they use for videos on and then just with normal room lights to show "how my makeup really looks in person" and they were all like "see it's normal to have bumps and texture in your skin social media is lying to you >:( no one has smooth skin and beauty gurus fake their smooth skin with lights and/or post editing to sell you foundation" babygirl i hate to say this but you literally just showed me the special lights you use in your videos to make your makeup appear flawless and your skin smooth exactly who do you think are the evil social media people making everyone so self-conscious about their skin texture. how can you have so little self awareness that you complain about a problem while showing how you directly contribute to creating it

as some of you may know, i got my surgery!!!! i’m absolutely over the moon and cannot thank this community enough for banding together when i was in need, seriously! 💛💛💛💛

for my recovery both my parents have taken time away from their jobs, and soon we will be having incoming hospital bills. i’m asking my community (hopefully for the last time) for your assistance with this process for a smooth transition back to ‘normalcy’.

okay look. i get a few asks every now and again about age gaps in relationships and i know that there are exceptions to every rule but.

i know three girls my age, twenty four, who are stuck in relationships that they shouldn’t be in because an older guy groomed them when they were young teens.

one was thirteen when a seventeen year old boy started flirting with her. she was flattered. she started lying to her parents and sneaking around with him. she fell in love with him. he says he loves her back, and maybe he thinks he does, but he doesn’t act like it. he quit his job without telling her when she was pregnant with their second child, almost singlehandedly raising their first, because he just felt like it. no regard for the family. and she laughed about it when she told me, like it was the funniest thing, like he hadn’t endangered all of them on a whim. because he’s done so much little shit over the years that she’s accustomed to it. he always gets his way and she cleans up his mess because she loves him.

another girl works a full time job and then comes home to cook and clean because her unemployed boyfriend refuses to. she was fourteen and he was eighteen when they started dating and she is still convinced he’s going to change. he quit smoking when she threatened to leave but literally weeks later, as soon as he’d cowed her back into submission, he took it up again, and then tried to paint her as a villain for ‘trying to take away his joy’.

all three girls become completely different people when their partners are around. quieter, smaller.

when it’s just us they laugh as they tell me about the men losing their tempers over something small, like knocking over chairs is a rational response to her asking if she can go away with her friends for a weekend.

they’ve been with these men since they were so young they cannot imagine their lives without them. their entire identities are forged around these uneven relationships.

and that’s the key - they’re uneven. i don’t doubt that two fifteen year olds can get together and stay together happily, because they both had the opportunity to grow up within the relationship, at the same pace. if it’s a fifteen year old and a nineteen year old, though, one has already done so much more growing than the other. they’re at completely different stages of development, they’re psychologically unable to have an equal balance of power in the relationship.

basically, please don’t be flattered by older people showing an interest in you. instead, consider why they don’t want to date someone their own age, who is far more likely to stand up to them when they get controlling. all relationships should have equal shares, but age gaps between early and late teens, or teens and adults, don’t allow that. please don’t take a chance on you being the exception to the rule.

the cognitive dissonance displayed in some posts about palestine by white americans etc is absolutely fucking astounding. i really really need you to understand that the horrific genocidal process of land expropriation we are witnessing in sheikh jarrah is how all of israel was settled, how every settler colony was established, and that that violence and theft are ongoing not just in occupied palestine but where you live. in the united states and canada and australia and new zealand and new caledonia and french polynesia and the french antilles and and and. and that if you don’t understand settlerism, the ideology behind it and the mechanisms through which it is enacted; if you do not see the material connection between standing rock and gaza, you cannot be effective allies to palestinians because you do not actually understand what is happening in palestine. that the dispossession and murders have an end goal, and it is the establishment of a colonial state that looks like yours. of a country where natives don’t exist, or exist in such minuscule numbers that large scale resistance becomes impossible. the end goal is annihilation. what appears like “senseless” brutality does have a purpose, and it is a purpose that is fundamentally incompatible with the existence of palestinians. and when you see pictures and videos from jerusalem, you need to remember that the land you are standing on was and continues to be settled through the same processes. not so that you can feel useless guilt, not to derail from the urgency of the situation in palestine; but specifically so that you can contextualize the genocide of palestinians and where it fits in the colonial timeline. so that you can understand talks of two state solutions and nuance and “both sides” the same way you understand manifest destiny and unceded land and one-sided treaties. and so that you can finally develop an internationalist political approach to indigenous struggle and liberation and imperialism, and start fighting the correct enemies where you live in the belly of the beast, because that is what you have to offer and what will help colonized people everywhere.
