Another long story about my day and a "love life" update....
So I had students pestering me about my love life on Tuesday (this is a regular occurrence despite the fact that I never give them a response) and I purposely posted about it on facebook hoping she (she being work ā€œfriendā€) would see it and be amused by it. Maybe, if I was lucky, she would even ask me about it. Essentially a student told me that she and her friends were shipping me with someone, but they needed to ā€œknow what the situation is first.ā€ Whether ā€œsituationā€ meant if Iā€™m single or if Iā€™m gay remains to be seen, but they were definitely trying to very awkwardly ask both. They were ultimately too scared to ask either, but I did eventually get out of them that they were shipping me with another teacher who is definitely not available but is at least not a man. So thereā€™s that. Apparently they saw us walking out of the staff room together one day and that was enough to convince them we should be in love.Ā
All I posted on facebook was the first part of the conversation where a student said, ā€œWeā€™re shipping you with someone but we need to know your situation first.ā€ I waited two long days and then she liked the post. (I am fully aware that I sound like I am 12 years old. It's fine.) I did not expect her to say anything about it to me, mostly because our paths rarely cross during the school day. From about 12:20 to 12:45 today we had an assembly for students to vote on who dressed in the most green (despite today being the 15th and not the 17th and despite that not requiring an assembly) and then I had 10 minutes with my 6th period students and 5 minutes with homeroom before early dismissal at 1:00. And into my classroom she comes at about 12:50. She wanders in and just kind of stands there for a couple minutes as Iā€™m telling students how they did on a practice test yesterday and complimenting them for good participation at the assembly. Then she just walks out again. And THEN she comes back a couple minutes later as my homeroom students are slowly wandering in and she comes up to me and says, ā€œOh! I remember why I came in here. I saw your post and I had to ask who theyā€™re shipping you with!ā€ I laughed and told her I would tell her the whole story after the students left. So after the bell rang I told her the story and I even told her how the kids were super awkwardly trying to figure out if Iā€™m gay but they were too scared to actually ask. So then she was asking if students know and I was telling her how some students are definitely more observant than others. And she was telling me how the students like to ship her with other adults on campus and how they canā€™t quite seem to figure her out either. But she gave me all the details and while Iā€™m not going to expose all her business, I will say that I would absolutely fall under the category of people she could be attracted to. (Sharing that with me unprompted seems pretty telling if I do say so myself.) So we just chatted for a while and laughed about the kids being ridiculous.
So the point of all this is that itā€™s just getting out of hand now. Like one of us just has to have the courage to make the first move because itā€™s just stupid and so obvious. So that was my Friday.

I was volunteered (Someone claims I volunteered myself. I definitely did not, but I am not complaining.) to stay behind from our field trip today with the students who didnā€™t turn in permission slips. There were 19 students who didnā€™t have permission slips. A grand total of 6 of them showed up today. So for about 4 hours, they played on their chromebooks, played card games and board games, raided my snack stash, earned phone time, and got an extra long morning recess. They were calm, well-behaved, and did very little complaining. It was quite a pleasant day.
But the important part is that my work friend (ā€œfriendā€ *wink*) came by the classroom to check in, even though she was supposed to be working with the 7th graders, because she heard I was going to have 19 students and figured things would be unruly. She ended up staying two hours and we worked through the word searches and connect the dots worksheets I made for my students (they absolutely did not care about about my word searches or connect the dots) and just chatted and ate classroom snacks. We got to talking about the peanut butter cookies I make and she said I need to try adding chocolate chips to them. I ditched my afternoon walk to bake cookies and she was absolutely correct. Iā€™m bringing her some special tomorrow.

Another day of censoring picture books for 8th graders.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I would like to think Iā€™m not in the business of censorship, butā€¦
Iā€™m reading the California Young Reader Medal picture book nominees to my students this week and they get to vote on their favorites. One of the books is called ā€œThe Elephants Come Homeā€ and itā€™s great. But I teach 8th grade and it took me all the way until 4th period before I could finally remember which two pages had the line ā€œThe elephants comeā€ and I was able to skip them casually without the students noticing.
Just in case youā€™re wondering how fun it is to teach middle school.

Me: ā€œDonā€™t forget grades are about to close for the end of the trimester, so this is your last chance to turn anything in.ā€
8th grader in the back of the room: ā€œOh crap.ā€
Me: ā€œOh crap is probably the right response.ā€

Took myself out for dinner and I was trying to put in a tip on the card machine for the very nice person who took my order but I was too stupid to use the machine and then I had to explain to her that I was in fact just stupid and not an asshole who would leave a $0.03 tip. So itā€™s been a great dinner so far.

Let me tell you about my day...
It's barely 2PM, but it has been an adventure. It started when I woke up 12 HOURS AGO at 2AM. Because I have all week off work, I decided it was worth it to set my alarm for 2:45AM to tune into the Eras Tour in Sydney and watch the surprise songs because I just know they're going to be amazing this weekend. But I woke up early and then couldn't fall back asleep. I checked where she was at in the setlist and adjusted my alarm accordingly to get a bit more sleep, but I was wide awake. Surprise songs ended at 3:50, so what time do you think I finally fell back asleep? If you said 5:45AM, you would be right. I don't know why I thought I would be able to go right back to sleep as if I've never met me before. It was absolutely a mistake, but I will be doing it all weekend and I do not care.
So as a result of this, I stayed in bed longer than I planned this morning and skipped my walk. I had plans to go to the local zoo this morning, but I was going to put it off until tomorrow since I was so tired. (As if I won't be even more tired tomorrow.) I also thought about going for my walk anyways and getting to the zoo later. However, I decided I would go first thing for when they opened like I had planned. For some reason I decided that I needed to look nice for my trip to the zoo. I wore my cutest outfit and put on some makeup and spent way too long trying to get my hair looking decent. I thought, "Why am I looking so cute for the zoo? I'm not going to see anyone know. Like I'm going to run into my work crush by the flamingos?!"
Tangent: My school district has some sort of like day camp type program this week since we're out of school. It's intended for younger students and some people (primarily like classroom aides, playground monitors, etc.) work during this time for extra pay. I don't know anything about this program and forgot it even existed, but evidently it does. Do you see where this is going? End tangent.
So I get to the zoo this morning just a few minutes after they open, looking extra cute. I'm waiting in line for a couple minutes at the entrance and I look in toward the first exhibit and WHO DO I SEE?! I thought, "Certainly not. There is absolutely no chance. Clearly I'm sleep deprived." But then I saw another employee from my district and a small group of young kids and I realized it must be her!
I could not even believe it. What are the odds?! So I kind of watched their group and they're taking the same path I do, but moving slow because they have a guide with them. I give them enough time to get ahead of me and then continue on. I'm wandering around a bit and see that they're now up on this skywalk attraction. (Bridges up in the trees. Very cool and the whole reason for going to the zoo.) As I casually glance up there, I see someone else from work waving to me. And then I see another person from work at the skywalk entrance and I said hi to him and asked what they were all doing there and that's when I realized it was the day camp thing. So I follow the group up the skywalk from a considerable distance and as I get close, I see they're stopped because their guide is explaining things to the kids. I will have no choice but to catch up to them. And then I hear someone call my name. (Let me tell you. It made me feel some type of way to hear her call me by my first name since she obviously only uses my last name at work.) So I catch up to her and the group and I said something like, "Did you guys plan a party and forget to invite me?" And we both kind of laughed and then I continued on my way. That was the entire interaction, but it made the whole trip worth it. And now we have something to talk about when I see her at work and I will absolutely be mentioning that I go to the zoo all the time and see where things go from there.

Our district superintendentā€™s office is about 40 feet from my classroom, but the only time she ever comes in is the last day before a break. We have all of next week off. How productive does she expect us to be today?!

Did I purposely post something funny and work related thinking that there was a chance she might like it? Yes I did.
But did it work? Yes. Yes it did.
Sometimes I forget I'm a full grown adult and that it's not like 2011 and when I get a Facebook friend request from someone I may or may not be interested in and who I've always thought could possibly be interested in me and I see the request is sent at like 7:30 on a Sunday night and I wonder are you thinking about me at 7:30 on a Sunday night or am I over thinking this and what is the appropriate amount of time in the year 2024 to play it cool and pretend I didn't see a Facebook friend request before accepting it (I think it's probably irrelevant because who uses Facebook anymore) because I've lost my entire mind but I've just anxiously accepted it because Taylor and Travis are out here making me believe in true love again.
