Hi Tracy, what was the Ainessa project about?
Um...medieval furries? Other people are now doing that subject matter far more justice I ever managed, though. Check out Mouse Guard and Beyond the Western Deep

Hello!
First of all I wanted to say that your art is super gorgeous and I am super into your setting because ahm DUH cats + crimes are meant together
So I have several questions for you if you don't mind!
Out of all the platforms, how come you are still on tumblr? I am new here and as far as I can see usually major creators don't really use it anymore (and good gosh you are major for me <3)
Have you ever felt jealous of other creators? Do you think your work does not get attention it deserves? BECAUSE I CERTAINLY DO. I bet my friends are sick of me trying to promote your work :D
Have you ever had any fears regarding your art? Or in general?
Hey, thanks! 1. Hmm…good question. It's been, what? At least ten years since Tumblr was really in its zany, tumultuous, hormonal heyday. Then came the Great Annihilation and the Female-Presenting-Nipple Fallout. The ashes have settled and what remains is a, uh, mildly eccentric, post-apocalyptic ghost town? Like Mad Max, except everyone is wearing pastels, sipping tea and chuckling cryptically to themselves about something amusing while fussing with their herb garden. Or thereabouts. Maybe the chaos agents lost interest and everyone else who dwelled here grew up into rather chill adults. I don't know. Either way, I'm kind of liking its vibe lately? I use other social media too. As someone trying to earn a living as a freelance artist, I sort of have to. I'm on Twitter. I'm on Instagram. I'm on YouTube. I have the comic up on Webtoon. I've even got a TikTok for animated stuff. I feel way more at ease here, though. There's less pressure to perform, and to do it aggressively and relentlessly so as to appease a nebulous, uncaring demigod of an algorithm. And when you're doing that amidst a morass of other people, when everything you labor over is reduced to "content", it gets to feeling like you're just flailing futilely around in a stormy ocean. Tumblr doesn't feel like that. No one is vying for massive success on tumblr. From a functionality standpoint, for me, this is still the best place to post a bunch of large images all at once without having to fully reformat everything. And I can answer questions in whatever exceedingly verbose way my heart desires without hitting a character limit…
----------------------------------------------------------
2. Ah, well, thanks very much. I really appreciate the of word-of-mouth championship! Promotion coming from an authentic place is absolutely the most gratifying kind (as long as your friends aren't too annoyed with it). It's difficult to objectively measure something like deservedness, though. Sometimes I feel guilty for the amazing good fortune I've had to be able to pursue some of my dreams. Sometimes it's an emotional, physical and financial struggle that has me questioning my life choices and frustrated that the universe doesn't spend any effort trying to balance sweat and tears against reward. Simultaneously, I know many artists who haven't had any of the opportunities I have in spite of - in my estimation - deserving it as much or more than I do. In a more perfect world, things would just be better for creators on the whole. And, well, for most people in general. And yes, I have experienced envy with a bitter edge, mostly when I was a younger, immature artist. I think envy is a pretty natural human reaction - it can be an overall positive motivator to see what other artists have been able to achieve and to desire some of the same level of skill or success. It can also easily turn into resentment that unleashes a whole array of destructive thought patterns and behavior. As I've grown older, I've found fewer and fewer reasons to really feel envious of anyone, though. You come to realize success is a matter of perception, a fleeting feeling, a pyrrhic victory, a largely illusory thing, and that other artists are your allies more than they are your competition. You come to value the things that are the actual substance of your life - like treasured time doing your thing (and maybe even doing it with other artists you enjoy) - more than you value the phantom triumphs and validations you imagine others possess.
----------------------------------------------------------
3. Oh yes. Fear is all around. Where to even begin? Fear of disappointing people, fear of ultimately wasting the time of the other artists I'm working with, fear of doing some harm, fear of accidentally offending someone, fear of disproportionate reprisals for accidentally offending someone, fear of losing everything in some contract arrangement gone bad, fear of injury that stops me from being able to continue working, fear of falling short of what I wanted to do, fear of income sources going under, fear of present political situations escalating and upending everyone's lives so profoundly that art isn't even an option any longer….and many more! They're always stacked and looming. All I know is that, while it's good to let rational fears make you careful and aware and prepared, you can't let them stop you.

hi tracy! hope you are doing well. may i ask how you first got started taking in cats and caring for them?
Tumblr media
For me - and for probably a lot of people who end up doing animal rescue of some sort - it goes a little something like this:
Injured/sick/lost/neglected animal shows up and you try to help.
You end up having to explain your behavior to neighbors, lest they draw other conclusions - like, why you are creeping around the back alley with a flashlight at 1am, who you are you talking to in high pitched voice underneath that porch, and why, logistically, you need to place a tuna trap behind their garden shed.
Neighbors come to know you as 'the animal person'
Now when they encounter an injured/sick/stray/neglected animal, they either bring it to you, or bring you to it. (Or, in some unfortunate cases, they start dumping their unwanted animals on you knowing you'll feel obliged do something about it.)
You start becoming a regular at the local shelters and vet offices, getting microchip scans on animals, scheduling low-cost spay/neuter appointments, putting your name on a list for TNR cat caretakers, fostering critters, trying to help fundraise for all of the overwhelming amounts of help that is needed…
And, with that, you have made connections with the local rescue community. What is that saying about the mafia? Once you're in, you're in.
You can, of course, take aim and throw yourself into the fray too, if that's why you're asking. If it is and you want to become involved, bless you in the absolutely sincerest sense of the phrase. Rescues need all the help they can get and more. Chances are there's a municipal shelter or a local non-profit near you who could use volunteers to come to the shelter facilities to help clean and to socialize with animals who are otherwise spending a lot of time in cages. You can also sign up to foster if you're equipped to do that. Often rescues are in need of people with reliable vehicles who can transport animals back and forth to vet appointments too. Donating items or your time to help with fundraisers is also helpful.
---------------------------------------------
There's a lot of sadness and heartbreak involved in all of this, but very deeply rewarding things happen too.
My long-time tripod foster, Dwight (pictured above), has just gone off to his forever home (with Newt, in fact!). He's a former feral who came to me with a terrible injury. It was a challenge getting him to settle in and trust me, but he has since revealed himself to be a big, purry snuggle baby.
Amidst the wreckage of the Great Tire Fire that has been the years 2020-2022, time with Dwight was, honestly, a much needed bright spot. It's cliche, but there is an aspect of animal rescue that tends to be a form of self-salvation too.

May I ask, what is Lackadaisy about?
Roughly, it's about a bunch of alley cats and jazz cats trying to operate a speakeasy in Prohibition Era America...and doing a terrible job of it.
Tumblr media
You can read it on the Lackadaisy web site (see the Archive to start from the beginning). Or on Webtoon in mobile format.

Hello Dear Author!
I would like to start by sincerely thanking you for Your wonderful content. I've been actively following Your art on social media for the past few months and Your work is essentially helping me to carry on with my life at the moment (literally). Your wonderful content has greatly influenced my life (particularly my clothing preferences, the music I listen to and has basically changed my attitude towards some things for the better). Your efforts are incredibly inspiring and supportive. Thank You so much!
I'm currently writing fanfiction based on my alternate universe (in which I've moved the action of Your comic to 1920s London - Lackadaisy itself is in Soho :)
My question to You is: - How do You feel about fanfiction and alternate universes that fans write based on Your project?
I especially wanted to thank You for the Savoys - they are one of my favourite characters in Your universe. They're just so adorable!
(Apologies for wasting Your time!)
I wish You health and success in Your work Dear Author!
If you don't mind I'll leave these guys here (this is one just of the illustrations for my alternate universe)
Tumblr media
Oh, wow, wonderful, dramatic piece of artwork here! Thank you for sharing it! Your fanfic concept sounds pretty marvelous too. I'm touched to hear Lackadaisy has been a help to you. Things are rough out there. The past few years have been a relentless kick in the teeth in a lot of ways. Creative projects and fiction do provide some refuge (I've definitely been there...without wanting to come back), and they can be useful tools for processing things you may be dealing with. Please do take care of your mental and physical wellbeing more directly too, though, especially if life has been feeling a bit like an ongoing struggle lately.
------------------------------------
About fan fiction - a complicated topic, but I'll try to be succinct: -- I think it's a great way for people to hone their writing skills. Or even to just indulge in topics of interest so as to do something we should all do more often - enjoy life.
-- Regarding Lackadaisy specifically, you mostly won't see me engaging with fanfiction. It's not because I object to it, but it is a potential minefield for dispute and even legal troubles. I tend to feel it's best for me not to opine openly and specifically on any given piece of work.
-- That said, in a general sense, I'm usually beaming inside to find that anyone has enough interest in Lackadaisy to write their own fiction about the characters or alternate versions of the world they live in. As long as it's is not being exploited for some commercial purpose, and as long as the context isn't veering into odious territories (like, you know, ..c ..p), you can consider work to most likely have my tacit approval.
Have fun with it! (Also, Savoy love noted! Haha - thank you!)

Finally, Has any of your beloved characters ever gone to a bar, drank lots of alcohol, & got super funny drunk? I mean, like, they got so drunk, that they feel like their having the time of their lives & can do anything, regardless of how stupid it might be (Which defines the meaning of the term "Alcohol-Induced Idiocy").
Most of my characters either work at bars/speakeasies, or busy themselves trying to supply a bar with its alcohol. So, yes, some number of them have been absolutely zozzled before.
Here's an example featuring Mordecai
And another one about the band
Then there are the characters who don't need alcohol to feel like they can do anything regardless of how stupid it might be....
