one of the most important things, perhaps the most important thing I have learned in my life is that nice people can fuck each other up in monstrous ways. people can be bone deep kind and loving and self reflective and still lash out under pressure. people can be earnestly neighbourly and charitable and hospitable and generous and still find themselves in situations where they become selfish. people can be well meaning and easygoing and gregarious and hold deep seated opinions that turn them into vicious little bullies under the right conditions. nobody is just one thing, and nobody stays one way. every person is a kaleidoscope and they will surprise you. you will surprise yourself. it's not a warning and it's not a judgement and it's not an excuse, and it's certainly not a reason to stop trying or to stop trusting. it is just a fact.

I just think using the Notre Dame fire of all things as some kind of symbolism for the collapse of humanity is……….silly. Sorry! Like this isn’t doomsday. one or two human people made a mistake, left something where they shouldn’t or weren’t being supervised correctly. Anyone could do that. Anyone could make a technical mistake, even with disproportionately devastating consequences. If you wanna talk about recent fires that are indicative of the collapse of society, let’s talk about the grenfell fire in London last year that killed hundreds of people living in low income housing. There was so much institutional oversight involved, so much blatant disregard and disrespect for real human beings solely bc they’re poor….THAT was harrowing. That uncovered the horrific state of our world. This is fucked up but it’ll really, REALLY, be alright. There’s always a rich enough person willing to rebuild a monument. This will be taken care of ten times over .

something that really bothers me when people discuss natural selection is when people ask questions along the lines of, “why aren’t all turtles extinct if they’re so slow and dumb” and “if neanderthals are superior to gorillas, then why are neanderthals extinct?”.
Like these are such misled questions that you’d have to answer completely different, unasked questions to actually help the person understand, but it also belies a really unfortunate fact about the history of evolutionary science and how natural selection was once, and for a really long time, studied as if evolution is a battle between superiors and inferiors. and this framework was developed for the purpose of economic and sociopolitical gain, and to justify bigotry toward marginalized peoples, and this framework still permeates how people teach and learn about natural selection. it worries me a lot!
