au where maedhros doesn’t kill himself and goes with maglor to rivendell and there, by the time of the events in the hobbit, they are drawn out of their seclusiveness by the arrival of thorin’s company; bilbo approaches maglor with such unaffected awe and innocence as to make him genuinely treasure the hobbit’s company and they end up bonding over song and poetry; and maedhros, by observing the dwarves spelunking around, begins to give them hints of places to explore and dwarven lore to be found in the libraries, soon thorin discovers who he is and starts conversation in the direction of his former alliance with azaghal, and the dwarves’ genuine interest in his stories acts as the foundation for a steady friendship which leads to maedhros mingling more and more with rivendell’s society
