I decided to just take a screenshot of both of these and to answer the ask on the top. Thank you, that's very sweet.
But to answer your question about your lava lamp. When a lamp does this, it's a bit complicated. It could just be old and gave out. But let's not give up hope yet!
So the lava lamp is old and hasn't been turned on in a while. So the wax could just be a little stiff, and it would need a bit longer than usual to warm up and start working. So what I would suggest is buy a new light bulb, turn on the lamp in a warm room. Emphasis on the warm room part. If the room is cool or if a fan is hitting it, and/or if it's next to a window, the lamp could be losing too much heat to the room. So make sure it's in a nice warm room. With a new light bulb in it. And I would also suggest leaving it on for a bit longer since the wax is hard. It's going to take it longer than normal for it to melt and start working.
And since I don't know what size your lava lamp is. Here's a graph showing what wattage of light bulb goes with what size of lamp.

But also usually (not always). There should be a sticker on the inside of the lava lamp base where the light bulb is telling you what wattage light bulb the lamp needs.
Oh! I almost forgot if after you replaced the light bulb and the wax isn't fully melting. You could go up a few wattages. Because if you do that, the light bulb is going to get hotter, so it should help melt the wax more.
That is what I would suggest for right now. Feel free to give it a shot and let me know what happens. I hope this helps and good luck! 💚

I dropped my husband's lava lamp and it didn't break, but the bottle cap style lid is loose now. Can it still be used do you think? Or does it need to be recapped first?
If it's just loose but hasn't been bent up to the point where you can see into the lava lamp technically. It should be fine, but I would get it recapped as soon as possible. Just in case another accident happens and it gets knocked over or dropped. And the lid fully pops off, and the lava lamp juice gets everywhere.
And if it is bent up to the point where you can see into the lava lamp, I would just wrap a bit of tenfoil around it before you turn it on. So, it can keep the heat inside for the lava lamp to properly flow. But that's only if the cap is messed up to the point where you can kind of see inside of it. Which buy your description doesn't seem like that's the case. But I just thought to mention that just in case. Hope this helps! 🩷
