2018 was a the beginning of a personal & professional journey that felt more important than anything I’ve ever done. That year huge things happened in my life that I didn’t choose. That forced me to look closely at everything I was choosing. I started really thinking about how little time I have to live & being fully aware that I only have one short lifetime, & one career. After some reflection and a lot of humility I realized that I was actually choosing all the things that were happening in my life & I was accountable for my choices & their consequences. I was choosing how I was spending my one short life. I decided to make some big changes quickly. One of those changes came from a convo with my now dear friend Phoebe Hunt who I was then just meeting asking me “oh do you play an instrument?” She was in my studio for a Tony Trischka session I was engineering. I realized not only was my life out of balance, but so was my career. I needed to get back to myself. I decided to find a record I could give all of myself to, & one that wanted & needed all of what I do. While playing a gig in Brooklyn with Mary-Elaine Jenkins I met Ruby Rae. I fell in love with her music instantly. We met in my studio soon after & discovered a shared love for so many things. I knew right away that she was the collaborator I’d been looking for & that we had to make a record together. She let me into her world & gave me the gift of allowing me to pour all of myself into these songs. I produced, sang harmony, co-wrote a few of the songs, & played all the instruments other than Ruby’s guitars & vocals. She was so generous & let herself be so vulnerable. I’ll forever be grateful to her for that. It gave me a chance to be the fullest version of myself & to give something absolutely everything I had, & it gave Ruby and these songs the spotlight they deserved. At the end of the day though this record is great because Ruby is great & the songs are great. She is one of the most incredible humans & artists I’ve ever known. I just tried to do my part to lift her up. This is a true story told from the heart. We gave it everything we had. Hope you love it as much as we do.
