On a metaphorical and thematic level I understand why there was the Buffy needing a job storyline. Getting a shitty fast food/customer service job is something young adults would relate to. Btvs always used metaphors for the perils of growing up. That being said, in universe there are two other adults living in her house rent free, Giles helps once (despite getting two paychecks at this point), and maybe someone should have called up Hank Summers about child support.
