I do think that something got lost when youth development people stopped talking so much about things like youth liberation or youth rights or adultism and started talking more about social emotional learning or soft skills or mental health or all the other things we talk about now. And part of what's dumb about it is that I remember listening to a big presentation from big funders in 2015 that "SEL" was the new, non-partisan, non-controversial term that we could use to create positive feelings in parents from across the political spectrum...and boy did that plan work out!!!

But also, I think we genuinely lost a kind of moral authority! Kids do benefit intellectually and emotionally from reading "difficult" books but kids also have a fundamental human right to their own private reading experience! Kids have the right and the freedom to use whatever pronouns they want or dress however they want or try on various kinds of identity (gender but also subculture! also being able to tell your friends that you're a cat/elf or named Ebony Dark'ness without anybody calling your fucking parents over it) and it's not some favor we're doing them because they might kill themselves if we don't. Kids have a human right to transition care and abortions and contraceptives because they have the right to bodily autonomy. Kids have a right, regardless of whether they have "supportive adults to talk with" to pick their own reading materials or explore their own ideas or learn about things that they want to learn about without some busybody adult in their business.

maybe instead of trying to cure autism we make parents of autistic kids learn how to work with different sets of behaviors. just a thought
