thoughts about the word “alphabet” to refer to not-technically-alphabets-at-all, like syllabaries? katakana for example

it annoys me because "alphabet" has a specific technical meaning and there ARE descriptive terms for non-alphabetic writing systems, be they syllabaries, abjads, logosyllabaries, etc. and if people don't know those (which i recognize is unlikely, because i didn't learn them until halfway through undergrad) they can use the general "writing system" or "script."

but also, like, as a specialist, it's hard for me to assess whether the general population understands "alphabet" to be equivalent to "writing system," which kinda changes the game
