like everyone else

for years, i wanted to be exactly that. love seemed like such a beautiful concept, which i wanted to desperately be a part of.

so, i tried.

but my several brushes with romance in the past had always seemed to go awry; usually the communications ended with me backing out last minute, as their affection for me grew.

dating nerves, i tell myself. what other explanation is there?

and so i pushed it to the back of my mind.

a couple years on, i meet a geeky, brown eyed boy. he shares my exact interests and hobbies, so quickly, we hit it off.

maybe it was our shared love for music that had me convinced.

maybe it was the way we would stay up till the early hours texting about just about everything, or the way he’d laugh at my jokes with his infectious smile.

i really thought he was the one.

“maybe aromantic isn’t the term for me after all” i began to consider.

so when he told me he wanted more, i mistook the growing pit of dread in my stomach for butterflies, and agreed.

surely if i liked him as a friend i would like him as a boyfriend too?

alarm bells began to ring as the days went on.

all the compliments he showered me in didn’t feel so good anymore.

when he held my hand as we walked through the city all i wanted to do was break free and run home.

the consecutive nights spent crying my room always ended with the same question:

what’s wrong with me?

i couldn’t understand why my body wasn’t reacting the way i was meant to.

and i could tell he was beginning to realise too.

avoiding him for hours would turn into entire days. the guilt was too much.

i couldn’t carry the secret any longer.

after we had parted ways, my eyes fell back upon “aromantic” again.

but this time, i didn’t turn it away.

i welcomed it with open arms, because it was proof. proof that i am normal.

and i finally had an answer.

I watched the new Star Wars yesterday, and there was this one quote that I couldn't help but associate with the current climate in the LGBTQIA+ discourse: "They win by making you think you are alone.". It feels pertinent with all the forces working to divide and crate conflict within the community.
