BTS FANFIC WRITERS OF COLOR YOU NEED TO READ ASAP

Yesterday, I wrote about a post about the whitewashing that can happen in BTS fanfics and why we need POC writers in general - and in the BTS fandom. Today, I have a post with more than 60 BTS fanfic authors of color. Shout out to the Possums, @bangtanbathhouse-main, and my other moots for their help.

The beauty of such a large and diverse BTS fandom is that there are so many talented ARMY authors in our fanfic communities. As I mentioned in my post about how whitewashed BTS fanfics can be, I get especially happy when I come across fellow POC writers. Thanks to my own reading and networks of BTS friends and writers, I’ve compiled a list of BTS fanfic writers of color as a jumping off point to explore more POC authors and content creators.

If you are a writer of color and I did not include you (or didn’t rec a fic of yours), it’s nothing personal. Sometimes, I don’t know if writers identify as POC or I just haven’t come across your fics yet. Feel free to comment with your handles and a fic to check out and I will try to add you or update when I get a chance (and if I don’t, at least it will be in the comments once the comment itself is approved or moderated).

The Whitewashing of BTS Fanfics

I started to write an intro to an article featuring BTS fanfic writers of color and it turned into an article on the whitewashing of BTS fanfics. The post with the list will come later (hopefully tomorrow). ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Here is an excerpt:

For long time readers, it may be no surprise that I both love K-pop band BTS as well as love BTS fanfic. However, as much as I enjoy a great variety of BTS fanfic writers and their stories, I find myself searching for fics written particularly by authors of color and featuring protagonists of color. As an Asian American person, I long to see myself in stories and narratives I consume. I want the media and pop culture I ingest — yes, even fan fiction — to reflect the world in which I live — and that world is full of folks of varying ethnicities, sexualities, nationalities, and abilities.

THE WORLD OF BTS FANFICS IS SO, SO WHITE

You would think that diverse portrayal of people wouldn’t be a problem since the fanfics are about a South Korean band, but alas. That is not the case at all.

These are just the last three fics I wrote. I appreciate the likes, believe me I do, but you have to understand. Likes do nothing for content creators. It’s the reblogs. Because that’s how you find shit on your dashboard. Through reblogs. Not likes. This isn’t twitter or tiktok or instagram. This is a website that’s run by the reblog system.

Reblogging helps content creators put their stuff out there. Why do you think so many people stopped writing fanfic and creating beautiful fanart and edits? It’s because they put in hours of work and don’t get nearly enough notes for their masterpieces. Yes we do this because we enjoy it but like...some validation won’t hurt. A boost of confidence here and there might be all someone needs to finish whatever thing they started and left.

Dumb confession: I was a little Jewish child when I first saw the Phantom Menace- I was around 4/5 years old and had never been told about the concept of a virgin birth. In my childlike understanding there HAD to be a mom and a dad involved to make a baby, no exceptions.

Shmi’s comment about Anakin’s birth was obviously supposed to be a big, massive nod to the Messiah/immaculate conception belief in Christianity. But because I was dumb, and a child, and had never heard of such a thing I just assumed she meant the dad was a deadbeat. And because she phrased it as “there was no father” while looking pointedly at Qui-Gon I NATURALLY assumed that HE was the deadbeat in question! And she was low-key calling him out. The awkward pause after didn’t help.

So for years I’d assumed Qui-Gon had knocked up Shmi, ditched her, and then been awkwardly called out when he showed up and she remembered him. YEARS. I thought him being Anakin’s dad was CANON. 🧐😭

A guy is taking his girlfriend to prom. He waits in the ticket line for a really long time but gets them. He goes to rent a limo. The rental line is really long but he eventually does it. He goes to buy her flowers. The line at the florist is really long but eventually he gets the flowers. At prom, she asks him to go get punch. He goes to the refreshment table and there’s no punchline.
