“It was good for a while, being empty. I didn’t hurt anymore. But as time went on, it was like I could hear myself from far away, begging for permission to come back.”

Taylor Hawkin’s last gig
youtube
For people who grew up with the Foo Fighters, this band wasn’t just quality music. Foo Fighters are an emblem of resiliency. They are proof that good and light prevail no matter how dark the night the proceeds them. Their songs are unabashedly tender, sentimental, and compassionate in a genre that validated hardened masculinity. We all know Dave Grohl changed music by the route he took post-Nirvana, but he didn’t do that alone. Even though Taylor Hawkins wasn’t the original drummer, he is indisputably the drummer of the Foo Fighters. Forget skill and talent, Taylor embodied the spirit of this band like only Dave had before him.
Taylor’s last performance being victorious and joyous is only fitting. He is the strongest, most lively part of this gig. He drives every song forward with powerful rhythm and earnestness. In a decade, there will be an unwashed kid with long hair who learned to play drums from their favorite drummer, Taylor Hawkins. Just like with John Bonham, the musical legacy Taylor Hawkins will live on, and become more numerous.
Dave’s closing speech is made all the more poignant:
“So, look, I don’t want to — I don’t say goodbye. I don’t like to say goodbye, because I know that we’ll always come back. So, if you come back we’ll come back. Will you come back?”
Audience: “Yes!”
“If you’ll come back, we’ll come back. So then I don’t have to say goodbye.”
And I wonder
When I sing along with you
If everything could ever be this real forever
If anything could ever be this good again
-Everlong, the last song Taylor Hawkins ever preformed

I thought losing a best friend would make me feel lonely and hurt, but the empty hours without conversation were a surprise gift that I didn't know I wanted. I've become greedy for it, for those hours of being alone every day.
Sometimes I worry that that, too, makes me a bad person.

truly the end goal is not "my close friends aren't annoyed by me and it's all in my head, they're my friends and they love me", it's "sometimes I do annoy my close friends, just as the people I love most will also annoy me sometimes, because this is normal, and we will continue to stay friends, and they're not going to want to immediately cut me out of their life if I do something annoying once in a while"

Advice your mother should’ve given you.
Stick by your word and stand firm with your boundaries. Don’t allow people to poke, probe, and push your limits, boundaries, and no zones after you told them not to. Don’t be fooled, all people need is one warning to get the memo that something is off limits, but no one will respect a person who is all talk and no action. Put action behind your words, no one will take your words seriously if you don’t, empty threats get you nowhere. People only continue trying you when they know/think they can get away with it. Say it with me, first times a warning, second times a done deal. Don’t disrespect yourself by going against your boundaries and personal code.

“I love being horribly straightforward. I love sending reckless text messages (because how reckless can a form of digitized communication be?) and telling people I love them and telling people they are absolutely magical humans and I cannot believe they really exist. I love saying, Kiss me harder, and You’re a good person, and, You brighten my day. I live my life as straight-forward as possible. Because one day, I might get hit by a bus. Maybe it’s weird. Maybe it’s scary. Maybe it seems downright impossible to just be—to just let people know you want them, need them, feel like, in this very moment, you will die if you do not see them, hold them, touch them in some way whether its your feet on their thighs on the couch or your tongue in their mouth or your heart in their hands. But there is nothing more beautiful than being desperate. And there is nothing more risky than pretending not to care. We are young and we are human and we are beautiful and we are not as in control as we think we are. We never know who needs us back. We never know the magic that can arise between ourselves and other humans. We never know when the bus is coming.”
