lgbtq autistic culture is technically being abro/aceflux but not liking that the label denotes change so you use an umbrella term (grayace) to identify yourself

This randomly got reblogged so I'm reblogging again to say we did reach the donation goal like a while ago
[Major Warning for Animal Death so if this affects you badly skip to the TL;DR of this post]
A lot of you that have followed this blog for a while might know about our cat, Oliver, whether from me posting pictures of him or just mentioning him in posts. A few months ago Ollie just refused to eat or drink and just wasn’t acting his normal self. We took him to the vet, he had lost half his body weight(he was 13 pounds originally) in a very short time. The vet did a blood test, check some other things, and gave him some special food with extra nutrients, and we went home.
He started eating again, stopped a second time, lost more weight and back to the vet we went. The vet recommended prescribing him an appetite stimulant, we agreed to try it and it seemed to be working, he was back to his usual self and was eating was more vocal. Ollie had seemed to be getting better.
On Sunday, May 12th 2019 while I was at work I got a text from my fiance saying something was wrong with Ollie. We both rushed over to his aunt’s house and found Ollie completely unresponsive, but still breathing. We immediately took him to the emergency vet where we were told his condition was critical and honestly most of what she said was a blur but essentially there was very little chance of him making it out of there. It was an extremely hard choice to make but we agreed that it would be best to “help him pass” as the vet said.
TL;DR
My fiance hasn’t been alright since we lost Ollie. Oliver was born under his bed on his birthday and got him through a lot and was there for him when he was alone for years and he feels so guilty and hurt. After talking with some close friends we decided to get him a Cuddle Clone of Oliver. It’s 249USD for all animals and an additional 129USD for 2 Week Rush Delivery, which is 378 USD in total. I will be pitching in what I can from my paychecks and picking up more hours for this as well. I know this is a long post that will clog your dash but please, please if you can’t donate share this post around. Thank you.

Semiverbal Communication
I think we don’t talk about semiverbal communication enough in the autistic community. We all know nonverbal is not speaking in words or speaking only a VERY small amount of words with significant struggle and pain. Semiverbal, though, has a much broader definition, and we underestimate the value of using this word to describe the way we talk with our mouth parts.
Just because we can still sound out vowels and consonants in such a way to form a word does not mean we are communicating properly and effectively. So many times I’ve had people tell me I can speak “just fine” because they can hear what I am saying and then there ends up a misunderstanding of some sort because they did not understand that I was not speaking just “fine”.
Semiverbal could mean…
Speaking and expressing thoughts through scripts like movie quotes, commercial jingles, bits of songs, and things you hear in your everyday life.
Speaking a full sentence but replacing words with certain sounds or bodily motions so that there are pauses in the sentence where you interject the replacement.
Speaking words out of order consistently so that the correct meaning can still be interpreted, but only after taking a moment to think about it and correcting the order.
Shortening full sentences or phrases to a more shortened form such as “I love you” to “Love” or “I want water please.” to “Water”.
Talking coherently in some areas of speech and then other parts it turning out garbled or incorrect.
Sentences in your head not matching up with the words that come out of your mouth so that people misinterpret what you mean (this is a big issue for me personally, and I often have to get people to say back to me what I say so I can catch any mistakes because I don’t realize that they happen when the words come out of my mouth).
Starting out saying something and then forgetting a word so you have to start the sentence over  and rework it to fit in a similar word so your sentence still makes sense. Saying something but one word was missing so you have to say it again with the word inserted.
Thinking the right word in your head, but only wrong words coming out of your mouth.
Making up words to mean things even if you know the correct word for what you mean because the made-up word sounds more right to you (this doesn’t count mash-up words, just words that are completely made up).
I really believe if people understood the multiple ways someone can be semiverbal we may be able to avoid a lot more misunderstandings and frustrations when autistics speak and recognize even if we can talk, we are still struggling to communicate.
I think we should use the word semiverbal more because it doesn’t just mean can speak, but only a little bit, it encompasses a lot of types of difficulties autistics have when speaking.
Ok to Reblog!

I've seen you make posts about accurate captions for youtube videos, and i've been considering making some myself for some videos and i had a question. If you're making captions for deaf/HoH people, should you include silences between words like (...) or if the person stammers like 'ac-actually', or should you just transcribe what they meant to say?
It's easier to read subtitles without stuttering than subtitles with. Ultimately captions are supposed to convey the whole point of what a person is saying while being easy for someone to follow, especially since captions have to be timed with what the speaker is saying(give or take a second). Would you want to read "well y-ya-you know this isn't- this isn't act- well maybe" when someone is very quickly rambling about something with no pauses
TL;DR - with some things you shouldn't caption verbatim but get as close as possible

This Will be tagged so don't worry but can you believe that my god damn college has now done more for me than the government has?
I just got an email saying I qualified for emergency funding which is great considering that unemployment has suspended my payment since the beginning of this month

Alright since we're having a Portal Renaissance (not that I ever really stopped loving portal it's anniversary was recently and a ton of it is on my dash again) what's everyone's headcanons about the characters mine are:
GLaDOS? Lesbian
Chell is selectively mute and only ever speaks to swear at something
GLaDOS doesn't actually have a room full of companion cubes she makes each one as needed and just says that to be mean
She also learns about rickrolling
Wheatley has probably fallen off of the management before and just "blacked out in panic"(closed his eye)
Literally no one knows where the Animal King Turret comes from. Not even GLaDOS. She saw Animal King once and in that moment "elected to ignore it and continue ignoring it indefinitely"

how do i go about getting an official diagnosis of asd? i've been thinking i'm autistic for a few years but i was told it's really hard to get a diagnosis when you're older than like 5 and you're afab and queer as hell. i'm just worried about it and wanted to ask someone who was diagnosed older. thank you!!
I honestly went in not looking for a diagnosis specifically but finding someone that fit what I needed. Definitely definitely start by narrowing down your search to lgbtq+ friendly psychiatrists because more often than not they can refer you to other people that aren't awful(this might not always be the case). I was really really lucky with finding my psychiatrist because not only did he fit that criteria but he also was the only psychiatrist in my area that accepted my insurance.
Start out by having your goals set up when you have your first official session, a diagnosis is really formal print on paper (that unfortunately a lot of places force you to have for accommodation) and you definitely also need to know what you want to have come out of going to a professional to cope with the worlds bullshit stressors.
If your psych isn't what you need to move forward? Try and get a referral to go elsewhere if you can. The most important thing is to find what works for you. Don't sacrifice progress if you don't need to.
Lastly don't expect it to be a one session boom you're officially diagnosed thing. It took me quite a bit of sitting down and talking things out with my psych (and there WILL be sessions that get heavy) to get diagnosed but it wasn't a completely dull thing either. Hell, part of what lead to me getting diagnosed was my psych "tricking"(i say trick because it was a smart move but I'm mad abt it) into talking about my first special interest which lead to...me rambling about my special interest.
This stuff definitely isn't the be all end all of advice and is simply how I went abt things but I hope it helps somewhat?

I was going to buy a dr pepper bcs we were on a five hour road trip and as I was grabbing it my mom went "caffeine this late is gonna keep you up" and I was like "no dr pepper makes me sleepy" and without missing a beat she was like "so either you have adhd or you're autistic"
Well guess who was right about that
It's wild to think that I only really made the push that lead to my asd diagnosis because my mom sniped me from orbit at a gas station
