Hi! I just found your blog, but how would Vrishaketu react to Abhimanyu? I personal headcanon them as best friends and rivals. Obviously a more friendly rivalry and tuned down version of their father's.

Oh that definitely depends on how someone views the two of them.

For my versions specifically; Vrishaketu has a lot of complicated feelings towards Abhimanyu. A lot of his early time with the Pandavas was conflict over if he was simply a replacement for the boy.

Since (my) Vrishaketu also took up training Abhimanyu’s son — there’s also conflict between them there. While Parkisit loves the *idea* of his dad ; he’s never actually meet him. He died before his birth. So while he views him as his ‘father’, he doesn’t see him as his ‘dad’.

I bring him up because it’s a source of conflict between the two! Abhimanyu , whose so happy to finally meet his son , is also confused why the boy doesn’t seem to actually *care* about him and instead cares more about the son of an enemy (an enemy that helped kill him).

The person (my) Vrishaketu has a rivalry (in parallel with his father’s) with is Babruvahana (who ironically; also killed Vrishaketu but that was temporary and he apologized for that) — so even then the two don’t have a matching dynamic.

How I see them is; a child who grew up too fast but never became an adult becoming jealous of a child who grew up too fact but became an adult for that very reason. Vrishaketu holds a lot of his self image in ‘not being just a replacement for Abhimanyu’. Abhimanyu, the golden child of the Pandavas, seeing it given to someone else (and I’ll add it for emphasis, who is to him the son of an enemy) is crushing!

They’re both interconnected, but the rivalry would be more bitter and harsh than their dads. It would be better to say a parallel of the Kauravas and the Pandava rivalry.

So tldr: the two don’t get along, and it’s unlikely they would!

Right so I opened up a quick reference to what it would have been like in the 1400s in Romania and for Catholics was basically — “if you were a noble and it was in private, people didn’t talk about it”. Also a good deal about Vlad’s brother Radu.

Interestingly there wasn’t a big official guideline for Catholic social values until 1891…so…maybe he’s more open? There’s a general thought through Catholicism lifetime about “not doing sexuality unless it’s for making babies” ; but at the same time largely those rules were for commoners, and clergy (when they bothered).

There’s definitely some repression and otherwise ‘sinful’ thoughts for him in general due to how homosexuality was treated (in regards to a masc master); and female masturbation was … less than talked about it.

Based on what I can gather from Eastern Orthodox (which he would have likely been raised in/what was big there also at the time) they have pretty similar ideas.

Alters in FGO teeter the line of “a separate character” and “the same character but in black” far too often.

This probably has its roots in how Saber Alter was introduced and then treated as just a palette swap, then fleshed out, palette swap, fleshed out - continuing on.

In relation to the main point of the post — I think a lot is because of how FGO seems to have trepidation about portraying Karna and Arjuna in general. They fall back on the same dynamic shallowly because it’s easy to write - brothers who are rivals.

Arjuna Alter is a different flip of this — he has to be written differently to be effective. But they seem to hesitate all the same with him and Karna once they are no longer in the Lostbelt. Even though Arjuna Alter is still missing those pieces, and Karna speaks as though he greatly mistrusts him — they fall back on the same shallow dynamic - brothers who are rivals. But this is an alter, so they change it slightly. They make Karna softer — even though it splits with his previous motivations.

I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s done intentionally - to keep the dynamic going. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s done intentionally - for the sake of the writer not wanting to make either look bad.

But it’s shallow because it doesn’t touch the roots of their dynamic. It doesn’t allow them to grow.

Arjuna Alter and Karna are not the first to be struck like this: and they most definitely won’t be the last.

I'm trying hard to not be too whiny ant certain stuff any the event that annoys me but I will say as a general rule of thumb if you're writing dialogue w arjuna alter and someone like karna about their relationship and you can sub out alter for the original arjuna and not need to edit the dialogue there to reflect that at all then you've missed the plot a bit. Arjuna alter may be a reflection of facets of Arjuna but he's still...different?

Like, he straight up has huge chunks of his life as a human missing from his memory, he doesn't HAVE the same relationships with the people from when he was alive like og arjuna does (including karna) because he can't remember it and even if the end of lb4 had it kick in a bit they do overall write him as being calmer about the rivalry and I feel like that should mean that his relationship with karna (and indeed, even how karna approaches him) should be handled differently. Karna's line for arjuna alter in the myroom indicates he thinks that alter is a possible threat and he's monitoring him in case there's an issue, yet his dialogue to alter in any given event is much more similar to his stance on og arjuna if a bit nicer even (ie 'our mother would have liked us getting along) and it's just..kind of frustrating they don't seem to try to delineate any difference between either arjuna and their relationships with the people they knew?
