it's always so fascinating and heartbreaking when a character in a story is simultaneously idolized and abused. a chosen prophet destined for martyrdom. a child prodigy forced to grow up too fast. a powerful warrior raised as nothing but a weapon. there's just something so uniquely messed up about singing someone's praises whilst destroying them.

here is a link to the completed story! all three parts are published and the whole saga is complete!
GIVE AND TAKE, PART ONE: FEAR-DRIVEN || WIP INTRO
Tumblr media
“How long has it been since you smoked?” I ask quietly, and she manages a small smile.  There are dark circles under her eyes.  “Three weeks, four days, and twenty-two hours.”
“Oh.”
GENRE: dystopia, but otherwise realistic fiction
THEMES: romance, relationships, lgbt, polyamory, oppression, fighting, discovery, lost and found
STATUS: in progress, being published at royal road
LENGTH: 25 chapters
WARNINGS: swearing, smoking, suicide, sex
INSPIRATION: the chemical garden trilogy by lauren distefano (fever / wither / sever); also pretty much every other dystopia i’ve ever read
CHARACTERS:
ABER – eighteen years old, newly married, and now suddenly at “home” in a house on the beach with his wife, his wife’s mother, and his wife’s two other husbands.  it all revolves around his wife, doesn’t it.
NUA – ava’s third husband, and seemingly her least favorite.  always has his nose in a book and his ears open, unsure of if he’s safe tucked away here, or just dangling from a rope about to snap.
KEOL – ava’s favorite husband, though not her first; and despite her attention, his place in this house isn’t safe.  hates his wife’s cigarettes and her mother, and aber, up until aber needs his help to find his twin sister.
AVA – unfortunately, aber’s new wife.  nua and keol’s wife, too.  addicted to cigarettes, keol, and annoying her mother.  why would she smoke like that in the first place, if her lungs are sick?
BAYAN – servant or slave?  doesn’t matter.  he’s got ava on his side, and that’s how you survive in this house.
LILLY – ava’s mother, and the real villain.  we knew that from the start, though.
ABIGALA – aber’s twin sister, lost in the wind thanks to lilly.  just like aber, but also…not.
and finally,
SHIV – ava’s orange cat.
find the introduction and preface here.  read now!  however, more updates will be coming on a new website – i’m moving to post my WIP chapters on royalroad.com, while continuing normal blogging here on tumblr.  💫
thank you for reading and for your interest!

FANCAST SERIES: GIVE AND TAKE
↳ kwak dong-yeon as keol legatte
keol legatte is twenty-four years old, and his wife ava’s favorite husband out of the three.  he is described as tall and strong, with soft skin and spiky black hair that both he and ava likes to run their hands through.  ava often paints his fingernails, and his favorite color for her to do is black, but with all his other clothes he enjoys soft sweaters and comfort over style.  he always has a black rope tied around his waist as a “belt”; it’s the first gift ava ever gave him.
in the three years that he has been with ava she has never been anything but rude to him, and he loves her for it, but he wouldn’t dare tell her or anyone else that.  with aber’s arrival he suddenly feels his place at ava’s right hand threatened, and all he wants is for her to reassure him that nothing will change.  but neither of them know how to express themselves, and so it just comes out as snark and sarcasm.  he wants to care, but knows he can’t, because if he gives his mother-in-law any leverage, she’d pounce.  the only time he feels completely safe is when he lies with ava at night, his head on her chest, listening to her damaged lungs.  he’d do anything to keep the familiar beat of her heart going forever.
fear-driven: give and take series part one
+ fancast series for give and take: ava / aber / keol / nua / bayan / penny / abigala / lilly / sloan / sigrid / nova / haywood / alis /

as a progressive catholic i try not to write "jesus figures" because 1) there is no one who can live up to my mans himself and 2) the idea of a self-sacrifice world-savior-martyr-figure is so easily misinterpretated into some conservative wetdream that completely strips the world of collective action and responsibility and leads to a sort of one-man-of-history thing that i don't want to incorporate into my writing, y'know, i'd rather explore collectivism and the loads of people behind the scenes analogous to the thousands and millions of forgotten heroes for justice in real life.
but also...the themes, the motifs. unavoidable sometimes. and recently ive been thinking, based on some posts and analyses i've read recently, about reluctant heroes. and about how heroes sometimes have no choice. and how sometimes even someone who loves the hero (for example their Mother) might have to force them into their role (they have no wine) even though the hero is not yet ready (my hour has not yet come) and the person who loves them knows it will be painful in the end (seven swords will pierce your heart) but knows it is for the greater good (for the son of man has come to save which has been lost) and that it, ultimately, is not their choice nor the hero's choice at all (let not my will but his be done). and god, no pun intended, whether or not the bible is "true", it sure is one compelling narrative.

cool thank you so much !!!!
Writeblr Interaction Survey: Responses
So in early July, I had posted a survey to determine when people read stories, excerpts, and so on on Tumblr, what catches their eye when they're looking for things to read, how they interact with what they read, and so on. The main idea was to gather information to make it easier for writers/the general writeblr community to a) find an audience, b) access that audience, and c) understand how that audience operates. All of this because discussions about interactions and whether or not people are reading is a fairly common and perennial discussion.
The survey closed on August 7, and it's taken me quite a bit of time to compile and annotate the results, but at long last, we're here.
And my commentary is over thirty pages long, so I'm going to spare folks the headache by linking you to the Google Doc. :') That's the first link. The second link is the spreadsheet of raw results, unedited (save for me wrapping text and hiding most of the demographic questions), in case you'd like to take a look and draw your own conclusions.
Please note that comments are turned on for the Doc to allow you to have conversations about the results there. They are not turned on for the Spreadsheet because there's a lot to take in as it is, but you're welcome to bring up information you find on the Spreadsheet in comments on the Doc. You are also more than welcome to talk about the results in reblogs or replies, and my askbox is open for anything you'd like to send anonymously or would simply prefer an ask. (I'd prefer not to be DMed, so everything related to this survey can be kept public.)
Finally, thank you to everyone who responded to this survey, either anonymously or not! All of your responses shed an incredible amount of light on how folks navigate writeblr. Some of this information confirms a suspicion or few we had about the community; a lot more was surprising. Not to mention the amount of insightful comments, especially in that last question. In other words, thank you so much for your thoughts, and for basically making this survey one of the most fascinating projects I've had the pleasure of tinkering with.
And also, thank you to all of you who read through pretty much all of this. I hope some of this helps you navigate writeblr or put your work out there or even, most importantly, find like-minded folks who just want to talk about writing. And if not, still, thank you for reading all the same. <3
(One last side note: Please excuse the multiple self-reblogs; we're sending this out to those who wanted to be tagged for the survey results in just a sec!)
