One of my absolute favorite dialogues you can have with Astarion is after your Durge discovers that they're Bhaalspawn. (which is saying something bc he's got a lot of great dialogues tbh). He's been supportive of you up until now. Hells, he's even kind of into how much of a little freak you are if you're romancing him. But this? This is A Lot for him. His facial expressions are controlled. He chooses his words very carefully, not expressing a strong opinion of you resisting or submitting to your father's will.

You can tell he is already running the mental math in his head about how risky being with you is going to be going forward. He is very much just as freaked out about this as any of the "good aligned" companions. No harm in hedging his bets, though.

BUT if you choose the option to admit that you are scared, and you don't know how to fight back against someone as powerful as Bhaal, his whole demeanor shifts.

"You know, I didn't realize you and I were so alike. I- I felt paralyzed to do anything about Cazador for so many decades. I gave up on myself. I gave up on any hope of escape after a few lashes. Bhaal controls you in much the same way. I don't know how you can beat him, but I do know this; you must try. The half-life of a mind-addled slave is worse than death- don't become his. I wouldn't live another century as one for all the moonstones in Evereska."

Genuinely one of the most honest and introspective and vulnerable responses from him in the whole game. And the soft pleading desperate way he says, 'don't become his'??? I am feral. I am gnawing at the bars of my enclosure.

This is Croia (kree-ah) (they/them)!!

They are terribly shy and soft-spoken to the point where they frequently get overwhelmed in social situations and become nonverbal and have to switch to signing/writing to communicate. At first, Gale is really the only one who can translate for them when they get like that, so the first few weeks with team tadpole are pretty difficult for them.

They are actually kind of low-key terrified of Karlach when they first meet her because she is Very Loud. But she pretty much immediately steps into a sort of guard dog roll for them in social situations, speaking up when they are struggling and standing behind them looking imposing when other people try to push them around, so they warm up (ha ha) to her pretty quickly.

She makes them feel safe, and they are (understandably) a very good listener, so they are more than willing to sit and listen to her happily chatter away about anything that she is currently excited about. Their social anxiety made it hard for them to really make many friends, so they can sympathize with her feelings of loneliness and isolation. They also specialize in fire spells, so they are accustomed to dealing with getting burns and such, and they are actually less daunted by the fact that their girlfriend is capable of melting skin than most people might expect.

Being with Karlach helps them come out of their shell a lot more, especially because they know that they potentially only have a limited time to be together, so they really try to step beyond they usual comfort zones and tell her things about how they are feeling. They are very sweet and smooshy together.

For anyone keeping track of this saga, It seems like one of the last patches has changed it so that you can't get Karlach's first romance scene until the Tiefling party. I'm just glad I was able to get it at all, but GEEZ. Why did they do this, she barely gets any specialized camp chats in act one as it is.

I made a squishy wizard for Karlach, who has literally tried to jump EVERY OC I have made thus far for this game, and...nothing?? I have high approval, I flirted with her at every opportunity and I turned down everyone else (Shadowheart is down BAD despite me not even having her in my party half the time). I know I can probably get it to trigger when I get to the tiefling party, but it's so ridiculous that it's triggered before that all the times I wasn't even trying.

...I am so scared I did something wrong and I'll have to go back and start over ;___;
