My own end goal for German was to be able to read Die unendliche Geschichte (The Neverending Story) and Tintenherz (Inkheart) in their original language, without a dictionary. And even if I didn’t recognize every word, to be able to figure out meaning through context alone. 

And I bet it could do it now. (Heck, I bet I could have done it almost two years ago!) The only reason I haven’t ordered my copies of these novels is . . . I feel that when I do, my German journey will be over. 

That’s silly, of course. I could keep going. I could read the rest of Michael Ende’s books and finish the Tintenwelt series. But it would definitely be the end of something. 

This is why my end goal for Russian is a little more ambitious: To be able to read War and Peace in its original language. That will definitely take a lot longer to realize! 

I just finished reading the locked room mystery book Murder in the Crooked House by Soji Shimada, and it made me go find my unread Banana Yoshimoto books to read one as a genre palate cleanser.

I love her work so much, and one of my ultimate goals for learning Japanese is to have her work in Japanese and be able to read it! It's so far away, but it keeps me trying everyday.

Until this year, my only memory of Roswell is watching part of the Pilot in 1999 and deciding to stick with Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which remains the teen drama of my youth. I can’t say I regret the decision, though 1999 was also the year that Buffy started growing less and less interesting to me. 

When I finally gave Roswell a chance just this month, I found it oddly nostalgic. Although I wasn’t watching as an older, wiser fan, I was watching as someone who remembered -- and missed -- the relative innocence of the late 90s. Many times while watching, I thought: “They don’t do that on teen dramas anymore!” Most of the time it was a critical reaction . . . but sometimes it was also wistful longing. 

I powered through the first two seasons of Roswell in about two weeks. Three episodes into the third season, which felt like bad fanfic to me, I decided to skip the rest and watch only the last two episodes. And now that I’m “done,” I’d like to watch the first season again. Maybe in English, this time! 

(It turns out that all the German dubs I’ve watched in the past have been excellent productions. Die Synchronisation von Roswell was aber ja schrecklich! But @scorpiotwentythree is right that there’s a quality to the love story of Liz and Max that can keep one emotionally afloat through a hard time. Bad dubbing notwithstanding.) 

I’ll also hunt down some real fanfic, because I’m sure some of it did a better job wrapping up Liz and Max’s story at the end than that awful season 3. If you have any recommendations, please send them my way! English and German are both welcome! 

Binge watched “Roswell” in the last 3 days (the REAL thing, not the terrible reboot). 

Gosh, I can´t believe it´s been 20+ years! I still remember the evening in 1999 when the pilot episode aired; I had left Mexico for good and had returned home only 36 hours earlier. Watching Roswell and the romance between the main actors kept me emotionally afloat, so to speak, in the following months. 

Seeing the entire show again after two decades makes you realize for the first time how terribly cheesy and often times badly written (as well as badly acted) the episodes were, but nostalgia is just such a bittersweet thing :)

5. Describe/ show pictures of your favorite project. 

Here is a bed cover that I crocheted for my mother. 

I used worsted cotton yarn in gray and red. (Unfortunately, due to the light quality in the photos, you can’t distinguish the dark grey from the light grey, or the dark red from the light red.) 

The four parts represent her four children. The blanket was a Mother’s Day gift. 

13. Do you like to watch TV while you craft? If so, what’s your favorite program?

I knit and often watch TV at the same time. I don’t have a favorite show, but old projects are, for me, always tied up with the series I watched when I was making the projects. 

Last year I knit baby booties for a pregnant friend. Although she only needed one or two pairs, I ended up using the whole ball of yarn until I had almost ten pairs! At the same time, I was watching LOST. I still have a few baby booties at home, and whenever I see them, I feel once more the emotions that I first felt with LOST.

Hier ist eine Bettdecke, die ich für meine Mutter gehäkelt habe. 

Ich habe Baumwollkammgarn in grau und rot -- ihre Lieblingsfarben -- benutzt. (Leider kann man wegen der Lichtqualität der Fotos das Dunkelgrau und das Hellgrau, und auch das Dunkelrot und das Hellrot, nicht so gut auseinanderhalten.) 

Die vier Teile stehen für ihre vier Kinder. Die Bettdecke war nämlich ein Muttertagsgeschenk.

Ich stricke und sehe oft gegenseitig fern. Ich habe keine Lieblingsserie, aber alte Projekte sind für mich immer mit den Sendungen verknüpft, die ich mir angesehen habe, als ich die Projekte gemacht habe. 

Letztes Jahr habe ich Babyhausschuhe für eine schwangere Freundin gestrickt. Obwohl sie hat nur ein oder zwei Paare davon gebraucht, habe ich schließlich das ganze Garnknäuel aufgebraucht, bis ich fast zehn Paare hatte! Gegenseitig habe ich mir LOST angesehen. Ich habe noch ein Paar Babyhausschuhe bei mir, und wann immer ich sie wieder sehe, fühle ich mich nochmal die Emotionen, die ich mich zuerst bei LOST gefühlt habe.

Nevertheless, I’d like to revisit my answer after a year, when my Russian is presumably better and I know the difference between представить and пресдставлять.

A “Holzweg” literally means “wood path” -- a clear way through the trees that only exists because woodcutters or loggers took some other trees away. But it ultimately doesn’t lead anywhere. Isn’t this an interesting idiom from the same language that gives us so many forest-set Märchen?

The Mothertongue Challenge should be a lot easier than the first challenge to write an original sentence! (As much as I wanted to keep up with that one, I was really out of my league.)

Here is my translation of “Весной природа оживает”:

Sa tagsibol nabubuhay uli ang kalikasan.

(Would you believe i had to look up the Tagalog word for “весна”? The Philippines has only two seasons, one of them roughly corresponding to a temperate summer -- so it was surprising to learn that we have a translation for something we don’t have at all.)

Word of the Day: оживать (day 1)

оживать /ɐʐɨˈvatʲ/ verb, imperfective – to return to life, to revive; to perk up, to come alive

Весной природа оживает. 

Do not confuse with оживлять - to bring back to life, to imbue physical or emotional energy.

I once read that you should describe yourself not with adjectives, but with verbs. Because you are what you do. That’s why the four words with which I describe myself are all verbs:

I pray. I learn. I knit. I write.

Cherry: Do you drink tea or coffee?

I drink both -- but prefer tea. I like black tea the best and drink it most of the time with milk. But I also like trying herbal teas and fruit teas. In my city there is a restaurant that serves 800 different kinds of tea. I would like to try all 800 one day!

The aroma of coffee pleases me, especially in the morning, but its taste is normally disappointing. Only twice in my life have I drunk coffee that tasted as good as it smelled.

A German Listening Exercise for Easter

This video would be a good challenge for B2- to C1-level learners -- not just because of the vocabulary, the speaker’s pace, and his French accent, but also because of the occasional gust of wind that interferes with the recording. I read somewhere that the easiest listening you will ever do is in the classroom, while the hardest is outdoors, in a crowd, when the speaker is using a megaphone. This video is about halfway between those two extremes. 

When watching it the second time, I compiled two vocabulary lists: A “happy” one and a “sad” one. (As always, I followed my “Take It Off” rule and trimmed a list of 34 terms down to a fit 29.) But I hope both of them make you happy you did this exercise!

Severus Snape is fluent in SEVERAL languages. He is self-taught. Sometimes when he gets angry, he slips into those languages.

Some of the languages he speaks are: Russian, Latin, German, French, Portuguese, and Spanish.

9. Describe your best friend! 

When you first meet her, she most likely seems uninteresting -- but only because she’s shy at the beginning. Only with people she trusts is she her true self. And then you find out how unique she really is. 

She is an entrepreneur whose business of creating personalized labels started as a hobby. And she’s really good at monetizing her interests because she can make beautiful things. This year she wants to make handmade soaps, in order to give them as gifts on birthdays and at Christmas -- and next year, also to sell them. 

Aside from this, she learned Spanish and can watch telenovelas from Mexico. Now she prefers to watch K-dramas from Korea, because of which she is also learning Korean, without taking a class. And when the quarantine began, she decided to plant a hydroponic garden. Four plants are now growing on her windowsill. 

And above all -- though I mention it here last -- she is a good, loyal friend. 

66. What is your idea of a perfect date? 

A first date or a date with someone I already know well? For a first date, we could simply meet in a café and talk. In case that’s too boring, there’s a twist! I’d order his drink and cake for him . . . and he mine for me! This is how we’d learn not only how compatible we are, but also whether we can stand each other’s taste! 

And for a date with someone I know well, I’d love to go to a museum. We’d pretend to be art dealers who want to buy one painting from each gallery. Then we’d try to guess which painting the other one chose. I’m sure that even if we know each other well, we’d still be surprised by the choices of the other!

9. Beschreibe deinen besten Freund! 

Wenn man sie kennenlernt, scheint sie wahrscheinlich ein bisschen uninteressant – aber nur weil sie anfangs schüchtern ist. Nur mit Menschen, den sie vertraut, verhält sie sich wie ihr wahres Selbst. Und dann entdeckt man, dass sie wirklich einzigartig ist. 

Sie ist eine Unternehmerin, deren Unternehmen für die Anfertigung von personalizierten Etiketten als ein Hobby begonnen hat. Und sie ist sehr gut daran, ihre Interesse zu monetisieren, weil sie schöne Dinge erschaffen kann. Dieses Jahr will sie handgemachte Seifen machen, um diese als Geschenke an Geburtstagen und am Weihnachten zu geben – und nächstes Jahr auch als Produkte zu verkaufen. 

Außerdem hat sie Spanisch gelernt und kann Telenovelas aus Mexico sehen. Jetzt schaut sie lieber K-Dramas aus Korea, wegen denen lernt sie auch Koreanisch, ohne einen Kurs teilzunehmen. Falls das zu langweilig wäre, gibt es ein Twist! Ich würde sein Getränk und seinen Kuchen für ihn bestellen … und er würde auch meine für mich. Dadurch lernen wir nicht nur, ob wir zueinander passen, sondern auch, ob wir das Geschmack des anderen leiden können! 

Und für ein Date mit jemandem, den ich gut kenne, würde ich sehr gerne ins Museum gehen. Wir können so tun, als ob wir Gemäldehändler, die von jeder Galerie ein Gemälde kaufen will. Und dann würden wir versuchen zu raten, für welches Gemälde der andere sich entschloßen hat. Ich bin sicher, dass auch wenn wir einander gut kennen, könnten wir immer noch von den Entscheidungen des anderen überrascht werden!
