Ismat ad-Din Khatun was a daughter of Emir (Arabic for Prince) Mu’in ad-Din Unur of Damascus, and the wife of Emir Nur ad-Din Zangi of Aleppo. When her father died in 1149, her husband seized control of the lands, and she was a consort until her husband’s death in 1174. In 1174 when Nur ad-Din died, Ismat ruled as Emira (Arabic for princess) in her own right of Aleppo and Damascus. King Almaric I of Jerusalem then seized Banais and Ismat bribed him to lift the siege. He refused until Ismat increased the payment and release of 20 Christian soldiers. William of Tyre claimed that Ismat had "courage beyond that of most women". Saladin in the meantime had conquered Egypt and named himself Sultan. He legitimized his claim by proposing marriage to Ismat- which she accepted immediately. The two unified Syria, and Saladin was able to gain support in Syria. She ruled as Sultana consort of both Egypt and Syria and continued to have an influence in the politics at the time. Saladin and Ismat were said to have been constantly writing letters everyday to one another, till her death in 1186. Her death was kept from him for three months for court officials were afraid to report it to him sooner. She had no children with either Nur ad-Din Zangi or Saladin- however her legacy lives on through the madrasas she built and a mausoleum for her father she commissioned. She was laid to rest in Jamaa’ al-Jadid mosque in Damascus.

Drew King Baldwin IV, aka "The Leper King". Don't you just love compelling historical figures who made it despite all the odds stacked against them? I do, I've had a crush on him for a month.

When you stand before God, you cannot say, “But I was told by others to do thus”, or that, “Virtue was not convenient at the time”. This will not suffice. Remember that.
