When plans don't go quite as planned!
For our latest trip to New Zealand, we had so many places that we wanted to see that I arranged a daily itinerary to try to squeeze in as much as possible during the time we had. I even noted sunrise and sunset times, considering from the photography perspective where I wanted to be at what time.
Cape Reinga Lighthouse was one of those carefully planned out ones - I'd seen dozens of beautiful photos of it at sunset, and imagined the exact shot I wanted. And well, let's just say, this wasn't it. In my careful, tedious planning, I somehow completely forgot that it isn't possible to control the weather! It drizzled off and on as we drove up to the north point, but I kept my optimism that it might clear and we'd get a great, atmosphere sunset. As you can see, that didn't happen. Thankfully, we did get there just in time to snap a few shots before the bottom fell out, and this shot turned out to be amongst my favorites from the trip anyway!

It's probably about time for me to do a queue up of some more recent photos, but for now I'll just post a link to my latest blog post featuring photos from Fitts Village Beach in Barbados. I currently live within walking distance of this beach and am so lucky to get to visit it almost every day!

Make sure to stop by the Wildlife Reserve on your next visit to the beautiful Caribbean Island of Barbados! It's not like a metropolitan zoo, but it's an immersive an experience with no glass between you and the animals - which includes being face to face with a troop of green monkeys!

I've totally lost track of how many photos I've queued up on here in one night, so I think I'm going to make this my last for now.
If I don't post anything for a while, you can still keep up with my recent photos and travels on my blog: https://lizzydavis.com/, but maybe with a little luck I'll end up popping back in before my queue runs dry and I'll load it back up again.

Mullins Beach, Barbados This was my favorite beach on the island for a long time because there is an elevated sidewalk right next to it that makes for picture perfect photos - although one might argue that this beach is actually crowded with beach chairs and road noise in reality. My dad came to visit recently and said the beach was not at all what he expected based on my photos! Framing and cropping makes a difference! But this beach moved into second place after I discovered a place called Bottom Bay, which has about 20x the number of palm trees. And I loooove palm trees!

This palm tree is one of my favorites on the island of Barbados. If I'm being honest though, it's not the prettiest palm tree and sometimes I feel kind of sorry for it.
It's crooked and lumpy, it doesn't have very many fronds, and as you can see, they aren't very full and they aren't that lush color green like most other palms. But you know what, it's still standing. And it weathers through every storm that passes by here. Also, it's got one hell of a view...
And I think somehow I relate to this palm tree on a personal level. Like this palm, I am not perfect. There's always going to be someone prettier, and there's always going to be some bumps and kinks to work out down my road. But I am always going to try my best to see the good in things, and for better or worse, I'll still be here after every storm passes.
...And every time I walk past this tree, I feel drawn toward it, compelled to take a photo of it to make sure I remember it forever. Because to me, it is beautiful. It is unique, it is strong and it is an inspiration. To me, it deserves to be seen and loved by everyone, just as much as every other beautiful palm tree out there.

One of my personal favorite daytime beach photos but doesn't seem too popular with everyone else. I just like the way the waves rolling on shore kinda follow the same leading lines as the clouds in the sky do. Makes me feel like I'm being warped into a vortex. Always fascinating to see how the photographer's eye is different than a casual viewer.

This is my most popular photo to date and also the coolest sunset I've ever managed to capture. It absolutely downpoured about three minutes after this photo, but totally worth it.
This photo (and more) available as prints on my website here: https://lizzydavis.com/shop/ - thanks for stopping by! <3

Okay, okay - there was actually one good thing about Miami Beach (see my post from yesterday for more info on that). Right up the road I found a blowhole and because the sea was so rough, it made for some fun photography.
And to be fair, I actually went back to Miami Beach more recently and it was a much less rough day. In fact, it was so calm that this whole blowhole thing was not a thing, which was actually kind of disappointing since it was still more interesting than Miami Beach!
If you like my excessive words, I have plenty more of them (and photos) in my travel blog and I would be endlessly appreciative if you even stopped by for just a minute: https://lizzydavis.com/travel-destinations/barbados/ <3

If you read about Barbados online, many people recommend Miami Beach. Well, I went and the only thing I liked about it was the clouds. The water was murky and far more rough than the west coast, there was dried up, fly-covered seaweed all along the shore and it just generally was not as pretty as I expected based on the readings.
So my advice: go to the west coast of Barbados, not the south coast!

Sometimes it's not the sunset itself that's pretty, rather the colors and the cloud formations that come along with it.

I recently learned that this small wooden houses (of which there are many around the island) are called Chattel houses and they are actually pretty unique to Barbados! They were homes sat on temporary foundations that could be easily broken down and moved elsewhere. Some of them (like this one) have been turned into permanent fixtures nowadays. I just really loved the color scheme on this one, but sadly this house sits in disrepair after having it's roof destroyed by Hurricane Elsa a couple months ago.
