SUMMARY | Levi has asthma and after a pretty ugly attack, his doctor suggests that he move to a village up North, in the mountain area with fresh and unpolluted air that would help with his lungs. It was a pain at first but as summer advances, Levi bonds deeply with people from that town, spending a summer that won't leave his mind, nor his heart for that matter, for a long time.
Chapter 1
Levi was furious, fuming, little clouds of smoke rising up from his ears and into the car’s roof, condensing then falling on his shoulders in the form of small water droplets.
“Tell me why do I have to go again?” Levi said, in a passive aggressive tone, like they didn’t just have this conversation three more times before.
“You know what? Fuck you, Levi! You are going to go to your aunt’s and you’re going to enjoy it!” Kuchel roared from the driver’s sit.
“But I had plans!” He thought back to the plans he had made with Farlan and Isabel. They were supposed to finally attend a party. Their first party in their 17 years of life, shockingly enough. Kuchel was very protective of Levi because of his sickness and didn’t allow him to hang out somewhere she couldn’t arrive immediately in case something happened. Parties were, of course, out of the question. The idea of Levi polluting his lungs with cigarettes and other people’s breath and other bodily fluids was completely out of the question, since his body was so fragile. They had come up with the perfect plan: Farlan would talk with his older brother to get them inside one of his fraternity’s party that summer and Levi would go spend the night at Isabel’s because her mother was also a nurse and Kuchel trusted them in case something happened. He would have also taken his inhaler with him and calming pills in case something did happen.
Not to mention the fact that Farlan was finally going to ask him out. Levi had had a crush on him for as long as he could remember and after hearing from Isabel that Farlan liked him back and that it was just a matter of time before he asked him out. Levi was in cloud nine, exhilarate. He was going to have his first boyfriend, and not to mention the love of his life. He was completely sure that Farlan and him were going to get married one day. With their circumstances it was almost impossible not to do so. Levi loved him and the blonde finally realised he love him back, things were going to be perfect. His summer was going to be perfect. Now, that had become impossible. He would be out of town for the rest of the summer, breathing in fucking mountain air because of the doctor’s recommendation.
“I don’t care! You almost died from that asthma attack or do you not remember being rushed into the hospital and stuffed with drugs like the roasted ducks you like so much to eat on Christmas? Now shut the fuck up before you have another attack. Christ child, you are going to be the death of me.” Levi grimaced, he knew better than to push. He turned his gaze towards the window and watched as the city’s grey, crowded buildings diminished and gave way to vibrant green, flowery meadows stretching indefinitely beside them as the highway advanced. His mother was right to some extent. His asthma had been getting worse and the attack from a few days prior had shaken him to the core. He still remembered hurrying up to get to school on time and just as he passed the threshold he collapsed and had the most aggressive cough fit. Cough after cough after cough, with so little time in between to breathe, he eventually fell unconscious.
If he were to describe his experience, he would have analogised it to a nap. A nap where you don’t sleep but rather you’re stuck in a state of semi-consciousness, thoughts speeding through your brain like cars on a highway. At one moment you would wake up and realise you are out of breath, not because you somehow forgot to breathe, that would be impossible, but because you were so concentrated on the things running through your head, fully engrossed in the world you have created for yourself there. You would sit up and pant, pressing your hand to your heart, which would beat frantically in your chest, and lift your shoulders in one big open mouthed breath. You would slowly start to breathe normally again, and everything would be ok. You would continue to go through your day, forgetting the incident, because it had become all too familiar. You’ve done it since birth, why should it be any different now?
However, Levi never got to take that in that massive inhale of breath, installing balance in his body once again, instead passing out,  in front of everyone: teachers, students, staff. He remembered someone panicking and shouting like a maniac in the background, students gathering around him, his friend Isabel cupping his head and trying to pull him upward, and Farlan holding on to him, shouting just like the woman in the background. It was a circus, one where Levi had been the main attraction, that is, before he almost fell into the dark, sharp claws of death. He had felt them, creeping up from behind, wrapping around his neck and mouth, pulling him in deeper and deeper.
For some reason, he had been ready to accept that. He hated himself, he was small and frail, forever grumpy, and always a reason of concern for his dear ones. He just wanted to be normal, he wanted to be able to play catch with the energetic redhead back when they were ten, he wanted play sports, he wanted to be able to run to school without fucking dying, and he wanted to stop being treated like china by his mother. He almost let go, he almost let himself drown into the void abyss of death emerging deeper and deeper with every second that passed by, but then his hands were grabbed by something: another warm pair of olive hands strongly gripping his own and pulling him upwards. He didn’t know who these hands belong to, his mother’s had long and cold fingers, Farlan’s skin was a little more pale, and Isabel was not that strong.
“Come on, Levi, Hang on, if you don’t survive we won’t be able to meet.” What? Meet who? Whose was that voice? It was deep and melodic, almost calming. It comforted Levi, more than he expected and he let himself be pulled upwards, back towards the light.
When he awoke, he was in a hospital bed, IV poles attached to both of his hands. In front of him, his mother was chatting with the doctor quietly. Levi noticed there had been tears running down her cheeks, he hated seeing her cry, it wasn’t fair. It made him want to reap his lungs out, discard them completely. A nauseous feeling overtook him immediately, and he felt himself cry out of frustration and anger. Why couldn’t he just be normal?!
“What should I do with him, doctor? He’s been getting worse and worse.” Kuchel blew her nose and tightened the hands that were already crossed on her chest. The doctor scratched his ear in thinking and looked at him for a second before turning back to his mother.
“Maybe take him to the mountains, where the air is clearer. It won’t heal him, but it will definitely help with the attacks, it will calm them down considerably.” Kuchel dropped her gaze, pondering over the doctor’s suggestion. Her face suddenly brightened up as an idea sprang to her mind. Directing her attention back to the doctor, she smiled and said:
“Well, that’s just perfect! I actually have some faraway family residing up north, thank you doctor!”
And that’s how Levi had ended up on the way to some distant aunt who apparently was not his aunt but actually the grandma of some cousin’s brother, who had been invited to Kuchel’s wedding twenty years ago, and with whom they had never kept in touch since. But his mother was a determined woman and after a couple of phone calls he was ready to go, shipped to some faraway city, scheduled to be stationed in a stranger’s house until the end of summer. Wop de fucking doo.
“Are we there yet?” Levi asked, determined to be a brat about it and drag his mother into the same misery he was in. He felt bad for the trouble he caused her and the worry he made her go through but he wasn’t giving up just yet. After all, hope dies last.
“Seriously? What are you five? Come on Levi, please don’t be upset. I know it’s hard, but know it’s for your own good. So please try to be open about it.” Kuchel turned and gave him a kind smile, one filled with understanding and tenderness. It was hard for Levi to keep this charade up when his mother retaliated with kindness. It wasn’t fair. Now he couldn’t get out all of his frustrations. He scoffed and turned his attention back to the window. He eventually fell asleep. How, he didn’t know but by the time he opened his eyes again they were pulling up the driveway of a secluded cottage, judging by the other golden lights shining in the distance and forming what was supposed to be the actual village. From what he could make out in the murky darkness, the cottage was more like a town house, its walls made of faded reddish bricks. It had four large rectangular windows, one on the left side, one on the right, and the other placed far up close to the triangular roof of the house. At its doorstep, a small yellow light flickered, struggling to keep itself on. Levi sneered but otherwise made no complaint.
The women who was in charge of Levi for the summer, welcomed them in with a warm smile spreading from ear to ear, making her cheeks close her eyes even more than they were already. She was about the same height as Levi, if not shorter, and chubby, dressed with a light pink wrapped dress and a purple-blue cardigan covering her shoulders. She displayed short, curly, grey hair that was carefully combed back out of her viridian green eyes and downturned nose, upon which rested a pair of circular reading glasses. Levi rid himself of his shoes then bowed in front of the woman.
“Thank you for welcoming me into your home. I sincerely hope I will not be a burden to you.” The woman smiled then gave him a hug, one which he did not return as he was too startled by her gesture.
“No need for such formalities,” she chuckled, wrapping the cardigan around herself, “Now tell me young man, what is your name?”
“Levi.” He deadpanned, unsure what to make of the woman. His mother had gone to fetch his luggage from the car, leaving the two of them alone. The lady gestured for him to go take a seat on the couch in the room left of the hallway. It was quite a beautiful living room, looked lived in too. Lots of trinkets were resting on desks, couches, coffee table, and a fire place, which was not lit. Taking a sit on one of the two parallel couches positioned right in front of the fire place, Levi finally noticed the set of fine china placed on the coffee table. The woman sat on the other couch.
“Levi,” she tasted the word, “Such a beautiful name. And jewish also. Did you know it means contradiction?” She laughed. Levi cocked a brow but said nothing, instead he eyed the little blue tea cups in front of him and felt himself already drooling as he imagined what kind of fine tea the woman had stored.
“I take it you like tea?” She smiled, then poured him a cup. “Well, nice to meet you Levi, my name is-“
“Chiasa!” His mother entered the living room, dropping Levi’s bags in the hallway. “Thank you so much for taking him in with such short notice. You are an angel!” Kuchel exclaimed in her fake tone she adopted when she was around new people. Levi rolled his eyes and patted the sit beside him.
“Ah, no worries, the pleasure is all mine!” Chiasa waved her hand as if it was the most natural thing to house a complete stranger, then poured Levi more tea when she noticed he finished his cup. “Tell me Kuchel, do you plan on staying the night? Should I prepare the guest room?”
“Oh that would be lovely but unnecessary!” Her mother laughed nervously, rubbing the back of her neck. “I have work first thing tomorrow morning and I’m afraid I must get going.”
“Such a shame.” Tsked the old woman. Levi stood up and walked his mother to the door, a grim expression on his face.
“Don’t go.” He tried to put on his puppy eyes, turning his bottom lip and widening his eyes. Kuchel bit her lip and tilted her head.
“Now Levi, don’t give me that look. This is in your best interest. Plus, the woman is a sweetheart. I have a feeling you two will be getting along just fine. Please be kind to her, she lost her daughter and to be frank she seems kind of lonely. Such a huge house for such a small person.” Levi hummed, then hugged his mother.
“I love you and I will miss you. And yes, I promise I’ll be kind to her.” Kuchel chuckled then pulled back, putting on her boots.
“Maybe I should do this more often, maybe then you’ll hug me more.” She smirked, ignoring the scoff she earned from her son. “Goodbye Levi, take care. I love you.”
“Goodbye, mother.” Levi smiled as she closed the door, but suddenly felt cold without her presence. He was now alone with Chiasa, who was sitting patiently in the couch they left her in. Who knew what this woman was up to? What if she abducted him in the middle of the night, sold him, and forced him to prostitute himself? That’s a dark thought. Levi shook his head, he could protect himself. She was just a raggedy old woman, who would probably surrender after the first punch was thrown. Levi could handle her, he was safe. He turned and entered the living room once again. Chiasa lifted her gaze and smiled at him, extending her hand and inviting him back to his sit.
“This must be all very strange to you, but I’m very happy to have you here, Levi. God knows it’s been too long since anyone but myself stepped foot in this house.”
What the fuck? Had the woman just read his mind?
“Well, you might be a serial killer for all I know.” Levi deadpanned, shocking the woman for a moment before she composed herself again.
“Really? What gave me away?” Chiasa winked. Maybe the woman wasn’t so bad, maybe he was just being paranoid. Still, he didn’t trust her yet. He checked his now empty cup and pouted. He wanted another one but he was too afraid to ask. He threw an inquisitive glance at the woman before him, hoping she’ll understand but she just watched him and tilted her head to the side, chuckling softly.
“If you want something, don’t be afraid to ask. Of course you can have another cup!” Levi quirked his lip upward, in half a smile. The woman sure was receptive.
“Thanks.” He muttered, then leaned over and poured himself another cup. Taking the first sip, he leaned back into the couch, starting slowly but surely to relax. This place was his home for the remainder of the summer, he might as well get comfortable. Three months was an awful lot of time. Chiasa stood up, and held out her hand.
“I should perhaps show you the room.” Levi stood up, refusing her hand then tried to drown his tea, ending up coughing violently, amusing the old woman with his behaviour. She began heading towards the hallway again and up the stairs that were right in front of it. Levi followed close behind, grabbing his bags and making his way silently up the stairs.
His room was on the right side of the house, at the end of the hallway the stair lead-up to. It had one of those big rectangular window Levi saw outside, placed just above the bed, a wood bed frame adjourned with a pristine white mattress on top which laid clean green sheets. Large wood pillars supported the ceiling, decorated with a variety of books and plants on their horizontal sections. It was clear the room had been taken care of. It was a pleasure, quite an immense one at that, to be welcomed to a clean and organised room. He had briefly worried he will have to do the job himself when he got here. Obviously, it wasn’t necessary anymore. A smile creeped upon his face. Chiasa huffed a laugh beside him and gave his upper arm a squeeze.
“Your mom told me you liked a clean place, so I made sure to do just that. Do you like it?”
“Yes! Thank you very much, words cannot express the appreciation I’m feeling.” Levi bowed, but was quickly held upright by the woman who kept waving her hand, insisting it wasn’t necessary. But it kind of was, they had just met and Levi promised Kuchel he’d make a good impression. Chiasa was kind enough to clean his room, it was mandatory he expressed his gratitude.
“It was my daughter’s room,” she smiled sadly, “she was going to be an engineer.”
“I’m sorry for your loss.” Levi offered his own half but genuine smile, then placed a hand on her shoulder. The woman looked at him with wide eyes, then placed a hand over his and shook it slightly. Levi knew what loss was like so he was able to sympathise with Chiasa. Only a few years ago had his father died.
“Well, Levi. I’m going to leave you. But before I go, have you eaten anything today? Would you like for me to fix us some soup?” He shook his head and assured the woman he had eaten before and he was no longer hungry. He lied of course, he was starving but strangely enough he had no appetite for food. Unpacking and maybe sleep would probably get him over this first day. The woman seemed nice enough and as she exited the room, Levi couldn’t help but feel a little lighter, his mother’s departure not so severe and nauseous as he thought it would have been.
He started to unpack his suitcase, taking each bundle fo clothing carefully and placing them in order in the wooden closet just beside the door. He made sure to categorise each of his clothes: pants to pants, shirts to shirts, sport gear to sport gear, and shoes to shoes. After he finished, he carefully placed his suitcase in a standing position by the closet, and taking his toiletries with him, went to shower.
Sitting now in bed, he tried to check his phone. There was no signal whatsoever. Great. He had no way of communication, and if this old lady did end up butchering him then he would have no one to call to. That was just his luck. Count on Levi to get stuck in a cottage with a stranger, stranded away from the world with no means of getting in touch with the outside world. He fretted all night long, tossing and turning, his head swarming with similar eerie, dark thoughts that, as hard as he might  have tried, he could not get rid of. Luckily, as the night started pouring into twilight, he finally relaxed enough to let sleep take him.
-
“Good morning!” Chiasa singsonged as Levi entered the kitchen the next morning. “How was your first night?”
“Could have been better, but the first night in a foreign bed is always the hardest.” Levi sat down at the small square table in the middle of the kitchen, biting back a yawn. “Do you need me to help?”
“Oh no! I was just finished in fact!” Chiasa turned around and placed two omelette plates on the table. They smelled divine, he couldn’t wait to dig into them. He noticed however that there was no cutlery so he sat up and rummaged through the kitchen, finding under the sink the cabinet with the forks and knives. He picked out two knives and two forks and placed one of each for both of them. Levi was prepared to dig into his food, but Chiasa stopped him.
“Do you not pray before you eat?”
Levi looked at her confused. Was he supposed to? Kuchel never made him do it and his friends also didn’t.
“I take it you don’t, but it’s not a problem. We can try if you want. I personally find myself enjoying my food better after I’ve expressed my gratitude to Him.” Chiasa extended her hands, reaching for his. He hesitantly took them. Her hands were very warm and very familiar, he liked holding them, so he squeezed involuntarily, the women chuckled at his childish behaviour then started chanting the prayer.
“Bless our food. Bless us, O God. Bless our food and our drink. Since you redeemed us so dearly and delivered us from evil, as you gave us a share in this food so may you give us a share in eternal life.” She let go of his hands. “There now you can eat, and don’t forget to ask me if you need anything. Water, bread, anything. Don’t be too shy.”
Levi nodded then started eating. Chiasa had been right, he felt much lighter and so much better. The food also seemed to have more flavour too, though he couldn’t figure out if it was just because he was hungry or from Chiasa simply being a good cook.
“Tell me Levi, do you have any plans for today?” The woman asked as she cleaned the table, refusing again any kind of help from him. He made a promise to himself that he would beat her to it next time, it just didn’t felt right for him to just sit there while she did all the work. He wasn’t like that.
“No not really, I was thinking about visiting the village, but if you have another suggestion, I’m happy to oblige.” Levi stood up and went to wash his hands in the sink. Making sure Chiasa was nowhere near the sink, he started washing the dishes, slightly smirking when he heard the disapproving hum from across the room. However he did not relent and was unsurprisingly left alone.
“It’s Sunday and the church has organised a town’s meeting, I think it will be good for you to get to know the folks from around here. Who knows, you might even make some friends.” The old lady offered as he made her way around the table, tucking the chairs underneath. Levi pondered over it, the idea of meeting new people didn’t intrigue him very much but walking around town alone also didn’t sound very appealing. He figured the latter of the two would be more enjoyable, so, reluctantly, he agreed.
-
It was a beautiful day. The sun was beaming brightly, its yellow rays warming them as they made their way through the town. Chiasa’s house was no different than the others he encountered now, big cottages that looked like town houses. Some were made of clay with brown logs on their sides and around their windows, others were similar to Georgian homes but had more of a rural touch to them, their architecture not quite so symmetrical and the pillars not quite so tall. The town was relatively peaceful, cars trekked through it scarcely, the roads instead being more frequented by bikes and hay carts.
Everyone seemed to know everyone, from the youngest children to the oldest of the population. They each knew each other’s names, mixing them with greetings as some of them came to buy groceries, or speeding past, or even playing next to each other. It gave Levi a warm feeling of familiarity. Chiasa seemed to notice but said nothing, instead choosing to tell him about the event they were going to attend.
“The picnic will be taking place in the church’s backyard, right by the lake. When we arrive we are going to salute the priest’s family and then we’ll go see if we can secure ourselves a place right in front of the water. And then, I’ll pour you some of that tea you like so much.” The woman gestured to the thermos’s head that hung out from beneath the blanket on her basket. Levi hummed in approval but didn’t say anything after that. If he stuck by her side then maybe he would get through this without letting his anxiety take over. He could manage it, he was sure of it.
The church was nothing more than a simple chapel. Its walls were made of brick with a few low arches on the front, a black roof, and a small tower from which a weathered bell hung. It was placed on a small hill and as they made their way past it, beneath them a little valley with a sparkling lake stretched. On its side there could be made out little colourful squares, that he reckoned were the blankets of other people. Children played, chasing each other, laughing whenever someone would trip or fall. Some people were laying on the grass reading or engaging in casual conversation, others would be eating. It was a pleasant sight, quite a peaceful one also. Back in the city they didn’t have those, or rather, nobody bothered showing up as they were too engrossed in their fast paced life, too busy to take a breather to relax with other people from their community. Levi had thought them pathetic or simply unimportant, but seeing one unfold before his eyes and in such a nice way, made him question his previous opinions. He didn’t have time to think about it any longer as he was pulled by Chiasa toward’s the priest’s family.
“Hello, father.” She saluted, pushing Levi in front of her. “This is Levi, he has just come in from the city and he will be staying with us this summer.”
Levi bowed unsure of what to do or say. “Hello, sir.”
The priest, who was two times Levi’s height, rose from where he sat crossed legged, and greeted him in return, “Why hello there young man. If you don’t mind, why did you come here?”
“No worries, sir. I came here because of my asthma. Mountain air will do wonders to my body, or so the doctor said.”
“Ah, I see. Well, I hope you will enjoy yourself here.” The priest sat back down next to his wife, who smiled and nodded her head. She was pregnant, and Levi reckoned she didn’t stand up not out of rudeness, but by pure incapacity. She was a petite woman with long strands of golden hair, prettily tied up in a bun at the top of her head. She wore a loose white gown, covering her small frame and sitting gently on the big bump of her womb. She smiled at Levi and waved at him as Chiasa dragged him by the hand to a small place of uncovered grass, perfect for their plans, being right beside the lake. They sat down and began chatting casually. The woman unpacking whatever food she brought along and Levi simply watching the peisage. The water was clear, his eyes being able to see every little pebble that laid on its floor, all the little fish that would swim about, wether alone or in banks. He enjoyed most when the sun would reflect off of the water, making it sparkle like one giant diamond. On the other side of the river there were mountains, big, rocky and snowy giants, bare at the top, white snow like icing on a cake, then slowly, as the rock neared the ground, vegetation would become more and more dense, vibrant dark green, combined with reddish brown, painting the mountain and adding more life and colour to the landscape.
“What do you think of it?” Chiasa said, noticing Levi staring.
“It is…” He wasn’t sure of what word to use. It didn’t leave him breathless, he had seen similar pictures on google, but seeing it in real life really did his impression on him. Naturally he went with: “Different.”
He could tell the woman was taken back by his choice of words. “Ah, I see.”
“Hello there!” A voice boomed beside him, scaring the shit out of him. Levi turned his head and was found face to face with a bright, wide eyed, looking at him in a disturbing way.
“Hi.” He answered, not sure what to make of the situation. The girl smiled, took off her shoes and proceeded to sit down on the blanket very much invading Levi’s personal space. He looked beside him at Chiasa, who looked totally untroubled by the scene unfolding in front of her.
“Hange, what a pleasure. You grew so much since I saw you last summer.” The old woman laughed, before being assaulted by a bear hug from said Hange. “This is Levi, he just came here.”
Like a wolf, closing in on its prey, Hange darted in a millisecond right beside him again, making the raven sneer and shuffle away, trying to put as much distance as possible between himself and the maniac who took the form of an innocent teenage girl. His gesture was in vain, as the second he tried pushing away, the girl came even closer, this time grabbing his hands in a frantic shook. Levi stared wide eyed before retracting his hands fast.
“Levi!!! Such a pleasure to meet ya! I hope you’ve taken a liking to this little town. If you want I can be your own personal tour guide, give you a crash course on the rural life. Oh I know! Maybe we could go biking, or hiking! I know a route through those mountains,” The brunette pointed at the chain of mountains across from them. “It will take us to a clearing very high from which you can see the sunset, or sunrise if you’re more on the adventurous side. Oh! And the wild life here is just exquisite. I ca-“ Levi pressed a hand to her mouth, making her shut up. She stared at him for a moment, blinking two times, before she backed away and fixed her glasses. “I’m sorry I tend to get carried away. It’s just so exciting. I’m so excited we met Levi! Let’s be friends!”
Hange extended her hand, poking him into the stomach accidentally. Levi stared at her incredulously, raising his right brow, before regaining his composure. ‘Let’s be friends?’ What was this? Primary school? He was a bit intimidated by her demeanour, and maybe overwhelmed by the sudden and unexpected meeting. He wanted to turn her down, saying he was better off doing whatever plan he did not have. It would have been easier, refusing and staying unbothered in his comfort zone. But he was stuck here THREE months, and as introverted as he might have been, lasting so much time alone was terrifying.
Hence, he accepts, unknowingly signing himself up for a summer that will not leave his mind, or heart for that matter, for a very long time.
A/N : I listened to Joe's Hisaishi piece One summer's day and thought wow! This would fit a summer love trope movie so well. Unfortunately, I didn't prepare a movie, but I did however write a fic for this alternate universe. Summer love has been on my mind for a while now and while I can't live it, it doesn't mean Levi and Erwin can't. I'm really excited for how this fic turns out. As always, I do not own Attack on titan or any of the characters associated with it, this is just for my own and your entertainment. Thank you for taking the time to read it and I hope you will stick around cuz there will be more where that came from! <333

Levi.”
Erwin and Levi meet again in the modern world.Series
-
Levi will never admit to anyone that he thoroughly enjoyed reading romance novels. Yes, they were a bit too cheesy for his liking and maybe some of the passage were kind of forced, but the way they made his stomach drop and heart flutter was enough to keep him buying one novel after another. His first novel of such kind was: Madame Bovary, a book which he stole when his mother was away at work. At the green age of 12 Levi hid in the house’s library, right behind the couch and began absorbing the words hungrily, gaping and gasping in shock whenever Emma’s affair with Rodolphe or Leon would appear in the book. He didn’t necessarily enjoy the story as it was quite bland compared to the romcoms he and his mother would watch on Sundays, but was instead mesmerised by the rose scented perfume that lingered among the pages, a phenomenon which he didn’t encounter in other books because, as his mother told him later, Madame Bovary had been a vessel for Kuchel to deliver her love letters to the post office back when she was younger.
Coincidently, Levi was now holding the same book, enjoying it with a little more fervour and fascination as he himself, in his twenty-one years of life, had experienced some form or pretence of love at some point with maybe two or three of his lovers. Wetting his finger he turned the page and finished what was left of the chapter he was currently reading. He let the book down and stared out the window of the train he was embarked on in other to return to his childhood home: Marseille, France.
Levi remembered his past life. This life had treated him extremely kindly, almost as if the universe was apologising for the hell it put him through the last one. He was born and raised in the countryside, his childhood being characterised by stealing from vineyards, scraped knees, and dirty faces, a fun and ideal childhood. His mother, although having gone through a divorce when he was small, was now well and alive, indulging herself with a quality lifestyle and relaxing hobbies; his home forever full of jamon, quality wine, fresh sea food, and oil paintings in easels  adjourning his hilltop village house’s balcony crowded with red boungainvillea. He had met Hange and Petra in the same village at the sea on a hot summer’s day, introducing himself brusquely, startling the girls, who lacked even an inch of recognition for him in their eyes. Levi quickly realised that not everyone remembered their past life and as such he should keep quiet. Nonetheless, the three quickly became inseparable, their bond not destroyed but only slightly deterred when him and Hange left for university, leaving Petra back home alone. Levi had left to study architecture at the university of Sorbonne and Hange to England to study Medicine at the Imperial College of London, surprising both herself and her friends when she had only applied at the university on a whim not even half expecting to get accepted, but she was the smartest person he knew and if anyone deserved it then it would undoubtedly be her.
Apart from them, Levi had not encountered anyone else from his past life, and by anyone else he only meant Erwin, his blonde, tall, and handsome commander. It was a disappointment that after so much time he still hadn’t managed to meet him, one which left him with an enormous hole in his stomach that would only get bigger every time he allowed himself to think about his past lover. He eventually lost hope and stopped looking for him all together. He had not told Hange and Petra about him however, instead choosing to keep his existence and unsuccessful search all to himself. After all, it is simply expression that gives reality to things. Never mind the fact that he would sound batshit crazy, but if he would have opened his mouth and openly voice the fact that he had not found him yet, then there would have been chances of not meeting him at all. He was still clinging to a thin thread of hope that Erwin will keep his promise of them reuniting again eventually.
At once, the train pulled in Marseille’s train station with a deafening horn, its locomotive letting out clouds of white vapour that swirled fast up in the azure sky, and announced its passengers that they have reached their destination. Levi stepped on the platform, and dragging his black suitcase behind him, he inhaled the fresh country air as a warm feeling came over him. He had arrived home.
-
On the other side of the globe, free lance writer Erwin Smith was packing his suitcase hurriedly, throwing clothes chaotically in his suitcase. He was terribly late for his flight.
Summer always turned unbearably hot in Miami, the dry heat and the omnipresent smell of sweat managing to deeply irritate Erwin. That had been his initial plan for the summer: change shirt after shirt as he walked the road from his apartment, a small 2 bedroom space that lacked air conditioners and that would turn into a literal oven during the hotter months of the year, and his publisher. Therefore, when Mike and Nanaba invited him to celebrate together their anniversary in Marseille, France, he didn’t hesitate to agree, he actually did with so much desperation that he worried even himself. He had quickly called his publisher making up some shitty excuse to extend his deadline, spattering something about how the sweet mediterranean breeze will to wonders to his inspiration. He lied, and quite horribly so, he had finished the chapter he was due but hadn’t edited it yet, a chore which he assigned himself for when he would return. Quickly closing his suitcase and praying that he didn’t leave everything behind, he ran out the apartment and waved his arm frantically in the direction of a cab that happened to be passing by.
Erwin also happened remembered his past life, something he cursed and treasured at the same time. He treasured the memory of Levi but cursed whenever he would wake up in the middle of the night covered in sweat screaming as he felt the phantom pain from when he lost him arm, something that had somehow followed him into this life also. Just like Levi, Erwin also learned that not everyone remembered their past life. His first such experience had been when he woke up screaming when he was small due to a very unpleasant memory, one filled with titans, blood and the death of his comrades. His father had come to comfort him but dismissed everything as just a nightmare that sprouted from Erwin’s wild imagination. At the age of 16 he started writing everything he remembered before being reincarnated and then at the age of 24 after graduating from university he published a book retelling his story. Society, just like his father, quickly dismissed it under the false and shallow pretension of fiction. Erwin didn’t mind, and at an interview when he was asked what had inspired him to write such a masterpiece, he simple answered: “It’s as if I’ve lived this life before”. In retrospect, a bold statement, but one that had triggered incredulous looks and nervous laughs. It didn’t matter, as long as he was the one that knew the truth.
At the airport, he was met with a very angry Nanaba, that proceeded to punch him in the shoulder as soon as she spotted him coming through the automatic sliding doors, dressed with cargo short pants, white t-shirt and one of those hawaiian shirts, espadrilles not missing from completing his outfit. He apologised and shook Mike’s hand, that came up from Nanaba, trying to calm his petite lover from ending Erwin’s life then and there. His friends, like everyone else he had become acquainted with in this life, did not remember their past lives. They had met in college when he tried to hit on Nanaba and earned himself a punch from Mike, who apologised shortly after and bought him a drink.
“You are well aware we’re going to France, right?” Mike eyed his outfit, and scrunched his nose in something close but not quite to disgust.
“The eccentric writer facade ain’t holding up anymore, you seriously need to change outfits.” Nanaba also joined in.
“I was up writing, thence the messy outfit. I do actually have fancy clothes packed.” Erwin retorted, trying to save himself from their scrutinising gazes.
“Good, because I want to enjoy some of those pretentious wines they’re so famous from at one of those expensive terraces that overlook the sea without wanting to crawl under the table from being seen with a hobo like you. Now come on, plane’s not waiting for anyone.” Nanaba flipped him off, her way of reprimanding him.
“Au revoir America, bien venue France!” Erwin exclaimed, mixing french with english.
“How much did it take to learn those?” Mike asked, amused.
“Only 3 thorough Duolingo lessons, of course.”
-
Levi pushed the door of the little vintage cafe open and was immediately met with the sight of Hange engaging in quite a heated make-out session with Petra. His arrival at home yesterday was met with nothing more than pure joy, as he was bombarded by his mother’s kisses as soon as he walked into the house. They spent a quiet evening on the balcony, enjoying some tea and simply talking the evening away. It felt good to return, he missed the salted air, the chilly breeze, the pink flowers and green bushes, and the exquisite view of the mediterranean sea. Later, when the mosquitoes had started to annoy them, Levi and Kuchel retired back inside the living room, where he was urged by her to play her favourite piece on the piano that had dust on it from never being used anymore. Upon the arrival of the next day, Levi headed to Petra’s cafe, a small vintage shop, which she had opened up quite recently after successfully raising the funds necessary. It was right in the middle of the hill, its glass windows giving a clear view of the stony road and orange coloured walls and roads of the city.
“You guys should get a room, it’s gross.” He said, not one bit of disgust lacing his words. He truly was happy to see his friends again.
“Levi!!!!!” Hange squealed and broke away from Petra, practically jumping over the counter before she threw herself in his arms, hugging him tightly. Petra’s behaviour was hardly any different, surging on the other two and tumbling all three of them down to the floor. They stayed like that for a few minutes until the first customer of the day arrived with an awkward cough to get their attention. For the rest of the day, they chatted quietly, each with a cup of special Petra coffee in their hands, reminiscing about old childhood memories and the things they did while they were apart. Hange had successfully landed an internship at a renowned research company back in London and Petra bought her first place, somewhere they would surely go after she closed the cafe.
“So how’s it going for you Levi? You seeing anyone?” Hange interrupted a peaceful silence then took another sip of her coffee, eyeing him curiously.
“Well, no not really. I guess I’m still waiting for the right person.” Levi replied, his mind drifting off involuntarily to Erwin.
“That’s a pity, tell him Petra!”
“I guess so.” The strawberry blonde sighed, scrubbing the counter. She looked troubled, stressed if Levi knew any better.
“Everything all right?” He asked, hoping she would tell him what was bothering her.
“Theoretically yes, the cafe’s been growing in popularity and the number of costumers has increased exponentially and it has become harder and harder for me to keep up. It’s afternoon and I’m already exhausted.”
“Hire someone to help you.” He offered.
“I would have, I even put up a sign a while ago asking for help, but it’s summer and you know how it is. Everyone would rather bathe than work.” Petra leaned on the counter, huffing exhausted.
“You know, Hange and I could help you if you’d like, until the summer’s end and till you find someone.” Levi scooted over closer to Petra and placed a hand on her shoulder.
“Sure! There is nothing we’d rather do, Pet.” Hange joined in, assuring her girlfriend.
“You guys, thank you.” Petra smiled brightly, exhaling in relief.
-
Their first day in Marseille had been spent at the beach until they were all fried. Well, Erwin had managed to get a nice tan, save for the red slight burns on his shoulders, those didn’t count. Nanaba had made sure to use sunscreen, but with her pale skin tone, she had turned into a lobster by mid afternoon. Deciding that it was enough sun for today, the three settled on exploring the city, in particular the ports, where smell of fresh caught fish would imbue their noses, the hill village, the sights recommended on the internet, like the colourful Noailles Market, Musée des Civilisatons de l’Europe et de la Méditerranée, and following a maniacal Nanaba that sprinted through every shop in La Panier.
As six o’clock came by, hunger made its presence known in their stomachs, they started searching for a restaurant. With an immense amount of luck and without too much time spent looking, the three had found themselves in Restaurant Peron, escorted to a four persons table right next to the clear glass that provided them with an extraordinary view of the sea, admiring the calm relentless waves and snow white moon that reflected itself on the clear water. When the waiter came, Erwin ordered, putting on his best french accent.
“Un Ricard, s’il vous plait.” He managed to make a fool out of himself, sounding exactly like an ignorant American. Un Ricard was an alcoholic beverage made with aniseed and spice that turns an enticing shade of yellow once water is added, a local must try. Nanaba ordered herself an Aperol sprits and Mike a whiskey on the rocks. The waiter bowed and went to get their drinks. While they waited the three engaged in casual conversation, their voices accompanied by the low murmur of the sea and other people’s conversation.
“I believe this has been quite a successful weekend, don’t you think, honey?” Nanaba asked Mike, leaning her face on her hands.
“Indeed. Happy 5th Anniversary, Nanaba!” Mike kissed her cheek tenderly. Erwin watched the display with nothing more than pure envy. It wasn’t fair that they had found each other despite not knowing their past life, it was utterly infuriating and it made Erwin seethe with anger and frustration, both emotions directed more at himself because he had not found him yet, Levi, his lover, his everything.
“Excuse me, monsieur. I brought the drinks.” The waiter interrupted them, making Erwin forever grateful as he was not sure how much more he could bare. He bowed and retrated, leaving them to enjoy their drinks. The Ricard Pastis Erwin had ordered had a creamy texture and yellow colour, bringing the glass to his lips, he tasted it, immediately scrunching up his nose from how strong it was. It wasn’t that he wasn’t used to it, god knows his college years hard served for so much, so many nights spent drowning vodka and absinth bottles, he just hadn’t expected it to be so strong, he thought it would be like Nanaba’s Aperol, slightly bitter and sweet. Mike was sipping slowly on his whiskey and asked:
“Any plans for tomorrow?”
“How about we stick to just visiting the town, my skin can’t take any more sun.” Nanaba proposed, hinting to her burnt shoulders that were covered with a very nice white blouse. Mike and Erwin both agreed.
-
Levi fumbled with the speakers’ wire trying to get them to connect with his phone. It was his first shift today together with Petra, Hange will come later tonight to take his place, something completely unnecessary as he would stay anyway. It was his turn to choose the playlist and he resorted to a simple jazz playlist that would blend in nicely in the background acting as white noise. Once that was settled, he wrapped around himself the black apron with the shop’s logo on it and went up to the counter, patiently waiting for the first costumer.
-
Their second day in Marseille was spent indulging in even more sightseeing. Nanaba woke them up at the crack of dawn, excited and completely oblivious to Mike’s and Erwin’s sower moods, dragging them with her to their first destination: Basilique Notre-Dame de la Garde. Located in a breathtaking hilltop, this spectacular church is the most important landmark in Marseilles. The site was used in ancient times as an observation point, and during the Middle Ages, was the location of a pilgrimage chapel. Erwin enjoyed the renaissance architecture, admiring the big hemispherical dome with a big golden cross on top of it, the golden statuette of what he reckoned was Virgin Mary, the symmetrical high arches, and smaller, little angel statues. It was truly a sight to behold. Their next destination was also a historical landmark: Abbaye Saint-Victor, a house of worship once belonged to an abbey founded in the 5th century. The abbey's basilica is one of the oldest buildings in Marseilles that is still intact, with foundations dating back to Early Christian and Carolingian times. With its crenellated walls and towers, the foreboding exterior has the feel of a medieval fortress. Inside, the basilica reveals a simple and somber design, which gives it a special aura. The crypt houses sarcophagi of the 4th and 5th centuries, as well as the 11th-century tombstone of Abbot Isarnus. It fascinated Erwin immensely, so much so that he filled his gallery with the amount of selfies and normal pictures he took.
He lied when he said he would find his inspiration here, but he was not so sure that it was true. The city’s architecture and overall way of being, from the local’s lifestyle, to its history and vibe, Erwin was sure to use all of this while working on his new book. Wether he would add a spin off in the book, or make references and parallels to everything he saw here.
It was now mid-afternoon and Erwin was exhausted, the sun constantly warming his head had not done a great job of comforting him in the slightest. They were now in Le Panier again, Nanaba having decided that she did not see all of it the day before and that it was absolutely mandatory they go again. Not wanting to be a burden, although he would have much rather gone to his room, Erwin agreed and set on following closely the two before him who were very much engrossed in their own little world. The old town, like any other part of Marseille they had visited, was also magnificent, with its romanesque architecture, houses that were colourful and joined together, and paved streets. It also housed a lot of shade, making him able to cool down and gather up whatever strength he had left.
The thirst he had tried to ignore for the better part of the day had become unbearable, his throat dry like a desert. As such, Erwin made it his mission to find some place from where he could purchase a water bottle. They passed by jewellery stores and artisan themed shops, displaying their handmade products, like dresses with weird designs from cottons, crystals, wooden scultpures, etc. Finally, in a corner, they had found a small cafe: Haricots vapeur de Petra. Quite a long name for a cafe but who was he to judge. He asked Nanaba and Mike if they wanted to join him but they quickly refused, instead choosing to go ahead. Erwin announced them that they will be seeing each other at the hotel before dinner. That way he could spare a few hours relaxing at the small tables placed outside the cafe, enjoying whatever drinks they were serving. He pushed the front door open and was immediately assaulted by the scent of fresh brewed coffee. The cafe was very nice, inside was quite chilly as there was the air conditioner blowing. Its walls were made of brick, from them hanging several plants, portraits, and drawings of people having coffee and the like. It had small circular tables with purple plush chairs that contrasted perfect to the black counter that housed pastries of all kinds: croissants (of course), pains au chocolate, cinnamon rolls, and macarons of all kinds of colours. It was just like an ordinary American cafe.
“Puis-je vous aider ?” That voice, the familiar voice. It rang through his head and brought back memories of the man he had tried to find for so long. He lifted his gaze and was met with the sight of no one other than Levi freaking Ackerman, cleaning a cup, completely oblivious to him.
“Levi."
-
“Levi.”
That voice. It couldn’t be could it? Levi refused to look up, he was imagining things, it was because of the song, the song he played the man a life time ago. We’ll meet again was playing through the cafe’s speakers, it was only natural he would be thinking back to when he visited Erwin’s grave one last time. With his hands now shaking he continued to clean the glass even more frantically, wiping away inexistent water, droplets he imagined were still there.
“Levi, is that you?” Once would be considered a coincidence, but twice? Finally, the raven haired boy looked up, only to have his breath stuck in his throat. Right in front of him was Erwin freaking Smith, the man he loves even to this day, the time spent together and the promises still so fresh in his mind. Erwin had kept his promise, he found Levi.
“Erwin.” Levi croaked, overwhelmed by emotions. He ran around the counter, stopping for a moment in front of his lover to look at him again. Erwin was exactly the same, except for an almost unnoticeable tan, his hair was now sitting comfortably on his forehead, instead of being styled back with gel. Levi jumped into his arms, wrapping his legs around the other's waist so tight, afraid to let go as he might disappear, proving only to be a figment of his imagination. He buried his face into Erwin's neck, inhaling the scent of cologne, sweat, and sunscreen. His lover snaked his hands around his waist and held him tightly, in the same desperate manner. Pulling away, Levi looked into his eyes again, relieved to see the same warm sapphire blue orbs staring right back at him. They were whole again, together again. Unable to hide his excitement anymore, the raven brought their lips together in a kiss, one in which they poured all of their emotions, the longing, love, and relief they had for one another were all present.
“Tu m’as trouvé!” Levi pulled back, out of breath.
“English please.” Erwin chuckled, running a hand through his hair, tucking a loose strand of hair behind his year before putting him down. Levi looked at him in confusion. If Erwin didn’t know french then that meant…
“We should perhaps talk. Wait here for a moment please.” He told him, pulling his hand away from where it was intertwined with the other’s. Taking a step back, he began untying his apron, then turned on his feet to head to the back where Petra was, baking pastries probably.
“Petra, can you cover for me? Something came up. Hange should be here soon, I hope you don’t mind.” At the sound of his voice, Petra turned around just as she was leaning down to grab the tray with freshly baked pastries from the oven. She searched his face, noticing the look of bewilderment, and made to grab his arm in comfort. Levi pulled away.
“I’ll tell you later, but please let me go!” Levi all but begged, making Petra shake her head with wide eyes as she still didn’t understand what was going on.
“Call me if anything happens.” She demanded. Levi thanked her then bolted out back to the front of the cafe where Erwin was waiting awkwardly in the door, never actually having left the spot. As soon as the blonde spotted him, he offered the other the usual warm smile.
“Why don’t you speak french, Erwin.” Levi asked him and gestured for the other to follow him out the cafe. Once outside they started walking on the direction of Levi’s house, unbeknownst yet to Erwin.
“I’m actually a tourist.” Erwin murmured, understanding finally the graveness of their situation.
“Where are you from then?” Levi croaked, his disappointment taking the best of him.
“USA, came here on vacation with some friends.”
“Américain.” Levi spat, his frustration finally showing. “How are we going to make it work Erwin?”
“I don’t know Levi, I believe that’s a problem for another time. I’m here for another week, let’s enjoy ourselves shall we?” Erwin took his hand and kissed it in an assuring manner, smiling again.
“Okay.”
And enjoy themselves they did. Making sure that Kuchel was out, Levi brought Erwin to his house, taking him through every room while he talked about his childhood, his vocabulary limited because his english wasn’t very good. Fortunately, Erwin was patient and didn’t push him, instead helped him by filling in the gaps with google translate or by using his own words when he understood the direction the story was headed in. At some point, they stumbled upon the piano and the blonde urged him to play it, Levi complying not only by second nature, thinking involuntarily to their time on their battlefield, but also by desire, pouring his heart and soul into each and every key he pressed, eliciting sounds that would later formed the master piece named Canon in D major. Erwin listened intently, absorbing every sound Levi produced, his gaze focused solely and completely on him. His lover playing the piano was one of the most beautiful things he had ever seen. The onyx black hair hung loosely in the air as Levi played, his brows furrowing in concentration, and shoulders tensing when he lifted each hand over the keyboard.
As the song came to an end, unable to hold himself back anymore, Erwin scooped Levi up in his arms and brought him to the couch, the other straddling his waist. It was all too much, the smell of Levi, the feel of Levi, the smooth alabaster skin, silky hair, minty breath, and citrus smelling musk. Levi, Levi, Levi. Erwin brought their lips together in a heated kiss, introducing his tongue shortly after, probing the entrance then entering fully. For a while, that was all they did. They kissed like teenagers, running their hands through each other’s bodies, remapping and rediscovering them. Slowly, Levi became more demanding and started to undo Erwin’s shirt, pulling it down his shoulders and caressed his hand over his chest, playing with the curly strands of blond hair that lined it, although scarce. He then kissed his neck and clavicle. All the while, Erwin had been undressing Levi, his fingers now at his entrance, working slowly but steadily their way in. In his arms, the raven writhed, low moans filling the room.
Done with the stretching, Erwin positioned himself at the other’s entrance, entering him slowly as to not hurt him. Once he was fully seated, he waited for Levi’s signal to move, a slow nod in the pit of his neck shortly after. Their rhythm was slow at first, an occasion to feel each other out, but as their moans got louder in volume, the pace, inevitably increased, turning the love making session into something more rushed and more carnal. They had all week ahead of them, they had plenty of time for slow and passionate love later. After a few more minutes each of them reached their climax, Levi first by tensing all of the sudden, his mouth open in a silent scream, then Erwin shortly after with a low groan. The smaller of the two slumped his forehead against the other’s chest and tried to recover, his panting waning.
“I love you.” Erwin brought his lover’s head up and looked him straight in the eye. Levi replied with a lop-sided me too before retaking his position in the crook of his neck, where he shortly passed out, the physical and emotional effort from the day finally taking their toll on his petite frame.
For the rest of the week, Levi showed Erwin the rest of Marseille, taking him sailing with Petra and Hange, snorkelling in the turquoise water, dining in other less famous restaurants that harboured a magnificent view nonetheless, and hiking. Levi also got to meet Nanaba and Mike, a meeting that was awkward at first but then turned casual as the chemistry they had in their past life never had quite gone away. It was now their last day, and they both chose to organise a brunch on a boat Erwin offered to rent. It had started out great, the interactions between the rest of the group going smoothly, but as night inched closer, Levi grew significantly more and more upset. The reason, revealed to him that night when they were alone, tucked in bed together, was none other than Erwin’s departure. It was time to say goodbye, their short week of heaven brought to an end by force of circumstance, a tragic end to an equally beautiful story. A soulmate who was not meant to be, at least not in this lifetime. They could try a long distance relationship, but that was inconvenient for both of them, they would soon fall apart, each having to take care of their lives. Levi had to work towards a degree and Erwin towards finishing a new book.
“Don’t go.” Levi suddenly croaked, turning towards him and taking his hands, kissing each of their knuckles. “I don’t want you leaving me again.”
Erwin turned his head away in thought. He was a writer, he could basically work from anywhere. In Paris he was sure to find a good publisher, working while also living with Levi in his apartment. If he put in a little effort he might manage it. But what about Nanaba and Mike? Would they understand? Would they still maintain their bond? Is he willing to give everything up for Levi? Erwin furrowed his brows, concentrating and thinking even more. Of course, he would go to the end of the earth for Levi, would rip his heart out of his chest and give it to him. Therefore, he voiced the only obvious answer for his lover’s request:
“I’ll stay.”
-
At the airport the next day Erwin hugged Levi and kissed him on the cheek, bidding his goodbye to his lover. After accepting to stay, they both decided that it would be best for Erwin to return to the states to get his affairs into order and when he would be finished he would return back to France and start his new life with Levi. So, with a waving hand, Erwin fell into step with Nanaba and Mike, who were waiting in line to board the plane. Levi smiled his way and said:
“Au revoir, Erwin Smith.”

From the statement above one would have assumed that Sina was the perfect school and that the rules that were imposed were just for their children's safety, but as Levi joins the school at the beginning of his senior year, he uncovers a secret so putrid and morbid that will leave him scared for life. That is...if he manages to make it out alive.
Chapter song: Devil’s trill sonata
August 23rd 1996, London
Deformed, lazy, pungent smelling circles rose above her head, as Kuchel exhaled the smoke the cigarette she was currently holding between her long, bony, alabaster fingers provided her with. She did not smoke that often, only when she was under a rather stressful situation. Today, her son would be departing from home in order to attend a boarding school across country. It wasn’t that she did not trust him or have enough faith in him, but since his brother announced Levi’s immediate enrolment, a feeling of distress had started to grow in the pit of her stomach, becoming larger and larger everyday, until it finally managed to take upon her entire being. Thence, the obnoxious amount of cigarette butts lying around carelessly and forgotten on the balcony of her victorian terraced house. Taking one last drag out of the device, which would inevitably bring upon her death someday, she dropped it to the tiled floor and not sparing a second glance its way, stomped it until the electric orange that lined its edge turned a dark ashy brown. Further covering up herself with her long brown coat and shivering slightly from the chill morning, Kuchel made her way back inside the house where the sound of piano keys being pressed consistently in formation of a slow and disturbing song grew louder and louder as she approached her son’s room.
The door was opened and inside a large piano could be spotted by the large and covered with white and blue curtains window. Sited at the instrument was Levi, pressing the keys with precision, his brows furrowed in concentration.
“Devil’s trill sonata?” Kuchel asked, sitting down on the small sofa in front of a coffee table where an unfinished game of chess laid, its pieces shining with the bright light seeping in from the windows. If she didn’t know any better she might’ve said that this was a new chess set, but with her son’s obsession with keeping everything clean and organised, something rarely got in poor condition.
“Indeed, mother. Took me a while to learn it. Care to share your opinion?” Levi replied not taking his eyes off the keyboard.
“It’s exquisite, like every sound your hands ever produced on that piano.” She answered, leaning further into the soft cushions of the couch. As if to prove her wrong, Levi pressed the wrong key and unbalanced the whole song, losing his concentration and ultimately his rhythm. Sighing in frustration, he got up and joined his mother on the couch.
“And just when I think I’ve got it, I mess it up.” Levi fretted, then glanced at the unfinished game of chess. “Humour me mother and grant me the honour of one last game of chess before we depart.”
“Certainly,” she replied then helped her son rearrange the pieces on the board. She chose white so she could dictate the conduct of the game: a simple scholar’s mate from her son as they were already late to the station. ‘E4 e5, Qh7 Nc6, Bc4 Nf6, Qxf7’ , Levi checkmated her, stood up and sought her hand, also bring her to her feet shortly after.
“I think it would have been better if we postponed the game, winning in such a desolate manner almost has me furious. However, I am well aware that we are already late to the station. Please lead the way mother.” Kuchel smiled at her boy, of course it would infuriate him, this game was nothing like the hour long matches they used to share, her being the first that introduced the game to Levi.
“Levi dear, you never did tell me why you quit competition, you would have become a master by now.” Kuchel said from the driver’s seat, looking shortly in Levi’s way. She personally offered to drive her son to the station as she wanted to spent every last moment with him before he was gone. She was sure to miss him dearly, and he would miss her too, though he won’t show it because he would be too embarrassed to do so.
“I’m quite confident you know, but I will tell you one final time: Isabell enjoyed the game and it feels wrong competing, something that she never got to experience as the rug was pulled from beneath her feet before she even had a chance.” Levi turned away and looked out the window, slightly fidgeting with his hands. “What do you think the school will be like? You attended a boarding school yourself, so please tell me.”
“That was a long time sweetie, a lot has changed since then, but I will tell you this: the bond you will form with your soon to be friends will last a life time.” Kuchel replied, not taking her eyes off the road. After a few more turns they arrived at the train station. It was finally time to say goodbye. Levi regarded her with one of his warmest smiles and wrapped her in a tight hug. “I will see you soon, mother. Take care.” And just like that he was gone, his small form disappearing behind the high arched red pillars of the station, the small black suitcase with the last of his belongings trailing behind him. His other luggage had been sent before hand. Kuchel wiped a tear from her cheek and got back in the car, heading in the direction of the closest high class bar.
-
To say the train was packed would be an understatement, every wagon was agglomerated by students just like him chatting animatedly about their summers, their high pitched voices ringing through the train, worsening his already present headache. He decided to try another wagon, so pushing past the intermediate hall’s door, he entered the isle of one with cabins. Every single one of them was packed with the same loud and obnoxious students, except the one from the very end. A cabin whose occupant was a girl with messy brown hair, tied up carelessly into a ponytail, square glasses sitting gently on the tip of her slightly down turned nose. She was mindlessly eating from a bag of chips as she pondered over whatever it was that she was looking at through the compartment’s window. Levi slid the door open and cleared his throat to get the girl’s attention. The girl shook her head, startled a bit by his presence then cocked an eyebrow his way, urging him to say something.
“Do you mind?”
“Mind what?” The brunette replied, her voice melodic and with just the right amount of deepness to it.
“Me sitting here.” Levi replied awkwardly, faking indifference and adopting a bored looking expression. He was never good with people and interactions like this distressed him immensely.
“Not at all, please take a sit.” The girl smiled and gestured for the sit in front of him.
“Thanks.” Levi hoisted his luggage up and dumped it on the support space above their heads, before proceeding to sit across from her. For a few minutes none of them spoke a word, instead switching their gaze between the landscape present beyond the window and themselves when they thought the other wasn’t looking.
“Hange.” The girl suddenly muttered.
“Excuse me?” Levi switched his gaze towards her, tilting his head to the side bewildered.
“Name’s Hange.” The girl, Hange, rapidly spoke, seemingly experiencing the same overwhelming emotions that came with meeting new people as him.
“Nice meeting you Hange, my name is Levi.” He extended her hand out to her and after a moment’s hesitation the brunette shook his hand.
"You headin’ to Sina?”
“Indeed, I am. I assume you do too?” He said, his eyes fixing her uniform: a white and freshly starched button up with a navy blue skirt, tailored to sit just above the knee, and a purple tie.
“Yeah.” Hange replied awkwardly then started fidgeting with her hands a bit more.
“The students screaming like they own the place do too?” He tried to ask, to further stir the conversation.
“Yeah, they are. My friends were also supposed to be here but one of them will be coming tomorrow and the rest are already at the academy.”
“So soon? Wow, I barely came today because it was required and because of the orientation day tomorrow.” Levi was being unusually vocal. Maybe he was just trying to soothe the other girl’s nerves, but he also felt that he could trust her, weirdly enough. At his affirmation, Hange’s face lighted up, and all traces of embarrassment seemed to have fled from her face as she now began talking earnestly. Orientation day was an opportunity for the students to mingle with other houses, or factions as she like to call them, and meet their professors, explore the school, and if they weren’t already be sorted into a house. Hange also made sure to enumerate all the teachers present, emphasising on someone with the name of Frieda Reiss, the math teacher and Nile Dok, the history teacher that apparently made very good jokes and his lessons were always pleasant for the students, being one of the few moments of relaxation throughout their day.
“What house are you in Levi?”
“That I certainly don’t know, I suppose I am to be sorted.”
“Yeah, well the housing system is pretty fucked up if you ask me. They organise us based on our personality type.”
“Is that a bad thing? It doesn’t seem to be, I would be quite content with being placed in a house with personalities similar to mine, makes the whole socialising thing so much easier.”
“Sure, but you wouldn’t be stepping outside your comfort zone,” retorted Hange. “Not to mention the discrimination against those who are considered “less special” are made.”
“I believe that if we were all to be the same, the world would surely become quite insipid.”
“If everyone shared your opinion, the school would be a much more better place.”
“Please explain the housing system to me, Hange.” Her gaze settling once again on him from where it was directed out the window, she began explaining. The housing system was based on the personality types of people and the roles which they played in society, making it easier for the staff to each of their individual needs. There were four houses. The first was Boethiah house, where architects, logicians, commanders, and debaters would reside. Its signature colour was purple, symbolising the high intellect its students possessed. The second house was Antheia, where advocates, mediators, protagonists, and campaigners found their place. Represented by the colour green, the house was known for its social and communicative students. The third was Martell house, which gave place to the logisticians, defenders, executives, and consuls, the indigo blue colour signifying their nurturing and loyal nature. The last of the houses was Lannister, housing the virtuosus, adventurers, entrepreneurs, and entertainers. The people in this house were fun and full of humour, the colour yellow revealing their outgoing nature. The houses were named by the four founders of the school, respectively Phoibe Boethiah, Panacea Martell, Caelum Antheia, Kestrel Lannister.
“Hange I’m sorry to interrupt you but this whole thing seems very Harry Potter to me, and don’t let me get started on the names, they sound right out of a fantasy novel.” Levi snorted, amused by his new school.
“Yeah, but the school was founded in 1000 AD, imagine the names they had then.” Hange replied, huffing out a laugh.
“I assume you’re from Boethiah?” He said, jerking his chin in the direction of her purple tie.
“Yeah, we are the smallest house as our personalities are so rare. I wonder what house they’ll place you in. Did you take the test?”
“Yeah, when I took my entrance exam a few months ago, something about a psychological evaluation.” And with that their conversation ended, instead each of them turning their attention to their forever changing surroundings, vibrant green meadows and flowery fields slowly turning into dull, grey moors as the sun above then started to set, orange, red, yellow, and orange blending with the dark blue the night brought along.

At the academy, in the encrimsoned light of the headmaster’s office, Erwin Smith stood proudly  with his hands behind his back watching from the giant circular window over the school’s gates in anticipation of the students’ arrival for the new trimester.
“You did quite a good job last year, Erwin. I expect the same this year.” Arcturus Smith, Erwin’s father and also the headmaster, spoke from his dark oak desk in the middle of the room, breaking the silence that had settled over the office. The blonde turned his attention to his father and bowed his head in appreciation and assurance. Arcturus bent slightly over the desk, his chin now resting in the palm of his hands.
“Please come take a seat. Let me introduce you to this year’s targets.”
“I was actually questioning myself when you were going to introduce them to me.” Erwin said, as he made to take a sit across his father. The man pushed two files in his direction, both of them stamped with red ink that spelled “CLASSIFIED”. Carefully, he picked up the first one and opened it. The picture of a redheaded girl with short hair stood in front of him.
“Nifa Thompson,” he read out loud. He eyed his father expectingly.
“She’s a sophomore and you have until September 21st, think you can handle it?” Arcturus cocked his eyebrow. “The girl isn’t very sociable and I’m sure some undeserved attention from the school’s head boy and number one bachelor will send her flying over the moon.” Erwin sighed and shook his head, then after a moment’s reconsideration looked up at his father and approved. The next file was about a new boy by the name of Levi Ackerman, he had short raven hair styled in an undercut, piercing blue-silver eyes, and a bored, impassive expression. He doubted he would be an easy target but he was up for a challenge. Looking up at his father, Erwin smirked.
“This one is perfect father. Blood type O and INTJ Personality type. He’s a gem. His mother is an alcoholic, his uncle is nowhere to be found, and he has no other close relatives. No one's going to miss him when he's gone. ” Now he laughed. Arcturus eyes shone with satisfaction.
“Just perfect for this winter’s sacrifice. And guess what? It’s also going to be a full moon, just like you always wanted. Maybe this year I’ll let you do the honourifics. That is, if everything goes as planned.” Then the headmaster leaned down in his chair and adopting again his usual cold demeanour, he said, “You are dismissed, son. Please go and welcome our students. I wish you a good year, full of achievements and perfect scores.
Erwin bowed and left the office.

As Levi walked through the massive iron gates of the school, he immediately gawked. Sina was like nothing he had seen. To put it simply: the school was spectacular. Touched by gothic architecture, the building displayed pointed arches lighted by golden yellow lamps from below, flying buttresses, and embellished colonnades. One feature that particularly stood out to Levi were the large lion statuettes that stood firmly place on each side of the enormous front staircase that started from the yard in which they were currently walking in, and that had a beautiful lotus pooled white marble fountain, and ended right beneath two high arched oak doors. At the gate they were met with a teacher, a women in her thirties that had piercing blue-purple eyes and ebony black hair that fell flawlessly on her navy blue Tudor coat, who escorted them inside the school.
The entry gave way to a long and wide hallway with vaulted ceiling and intermittently placed pillars. A few feet from each other hung golden chandeliers lightning their way as they headed in the direction the teacher was leading them in. High up in the ceiling there was stained glass through which the moon’s light slipped in, almost unnoticeably.
In the dining room there were four long tables each placed parallel to each other, the ceiling was painted with frescoes, beautiful biblical images. The professors’ dinning table was in an adjacent room, being separated by one of those pointed arches Levi had seen outside. Similar to the hallway, the dinning room also had stained glass, one particular piece stood out to Levi as it was the image of Jesus himself painted on red and blue glass, slightly highlighted by the moon’s light, whose outline could be made through the blue glass that composed Jesus’s robe. Truly spectacular. Even though he was just as rich as everyone attending here, he had never seen such a school. His last school was also private, but instead had modern architecture with the sparing of a few buildings such as the chapel or assembly hall.
“Please leave your luggage by the entrance and go take a seat at the table assigned to your house specifically. Those of you who have not been assigned a house yet please go and stand by the teachers’ table as the headmaster and the other staff will join us shortly and place you where they think fits you best. I’m Frieda Reiss and I will be your math teacher this trimester.”
Shortly after, the staff made their way to their table and as everyone was seated and quieted down, Arcturus, the headmaster delivered his annual welcoming speech and turned to the fresh meat waiting patiently and awkwardly into a corner.
“Ah I suppose I am to assign each of you your house, very well then come on here don’t be shy.” The group made their way once more in the middle of the dinning room. All of the eyes were on them, the other students waiting just as nervously as them to see who they would be welcoming in their house next. The headmaster rummaged through his black Tudor coat and pulled out a piece of yellow, coffee stained paper and started reading aloud:
“Emma Williams goes to Lannister.” A blonde petite freshman girl made her way to the table on the far off right of the room and proceeded to sit down at the table with the other students, who were cheering and clapping exasperatingly, excited for their new member.
“Jane Walker to Martell,” again, a freckled redheaded girl made her way to one of the middle tables on the left, also welcomed by the cheering of the other members and quietly sat down with a smile on her face, clearly satisfied with the choice.
“Hmm, Levi Ackermann, an interesting name for someone British. Your assignment has been a hard one as the test refused to reveal anything concrete, but after a long dispute among all members of the faculty, we decided to assign you to Boethiah as an architect!” Arcturus beamed, extending his hands and widening his eyes as he bore Levi with his predatory gaze. The boy smiled then made his way to the table in the far off left end of the dinning room. His eyes searched involuntary for Hange, who was seated at the middle already on her feet and waving him over ecstatically.
“Oh my god Levi! I can’t believe you’re an architect!! I never would have guessed! Come have a sit don’t just stand there.” Levi took a sit beside her as the brunette shuffled to the side to make him space. Everyone was looking at him, throwing glances and misplaced whispers to their colleagues. Levi only smiled in their direction and looked around the table, his eyes stopping on a fiery strawberry blonde girl in front of him that was burning holes in him with her gaze. They stared at each other, none making a step towards the other. Hange was talking about something in the background but he didn’t turn to pay attention, refusing to break eye contact with the girl. Eventually, with a puff the girl relinquished and extended her hand over the table,
“Petra,” she said. Levi took her hand and with a smirk told her his name. And just like that Levi made two friends at the Academy already, chatting animatedly with them over dinner. At some point, someone placed a hand over his shoulder. Somewhat startled, the raven flinched then turn to look for the hand’s owner, a blonde and well built boy with a cold stare was fixing him with his sapphire eyes, a lop sided grin present on his face.
“Erwin Smith, I came here to give you an official greeting to our school,” pulling Levi to his feet, he forcefully shook his hand and with a forced grin continued, “I am the head boy here and I am in charge of the students, if you have any concern or question about anything by all means come to me and I will do my best to support you and grant the answers you seek. Welcome to Sina Academy of Excellence and Inquiry, Levi Ackerman.” And with that Erwin dropped his hand and after placing a hand on his shoulder, walked away retaking his seat at the head of their obscenely long table, disappearing out of his sight as he took a sit back down. A rather interesting start to what he reckoned would be an equally interesting year.

SUMMARY | Sina Academy of Excellence and Inquiry is the best boarding school in all of England, producing over time leaders of Nations and outstanding personalities in society as well as being the perfect environment for your child to flourish in, spending his time with specially trained staff to support his need and wonderful, well behaved peers like him. We only have two rules: don't go in the woods and do not try to go through locked doors.
Chapter song: God rest ye merry gentleman - Pentatonix (slowed & reverb)
December 21st, 1995 Yule Festival
If you asked Erwin Smith what his plans were for the celebration of Yule, as he always remained on campus over the holidays, he would have told you that he were to be found cozying up on the lilac couch by the fire, basking in the heat emanated by the hearth, and enjoying one of those contemporary novels meant for mass consumption and reading the evening away in the dorms of the Boethiah house. Later, if he felt up to it, he would trek happily across the dark vaulted corridors of the academy to the bathing rooms and relax into one of the immense thermae alone, sans the forever present havoc caused by the agglomeration of teenage boys during early school mornings. What he would not have answered was: his girlfriend was to be killed tonight by no one other than him. Sweet Marie will meet her end tonight, scarlet and thick blood gushing out of her freshly sliced neck.
Flicking his wrist, slightly pulling back his navy blue Tudor coat, Erwin checked the time. It was 22:59. If he were to meet Marie in the next minute, then he wouldn’t have to worry about getting to the crypts on time, but he could always improvise - the campus being almost abandoned at this time of night with no students lurking around - and kill Marie right in their meeting spot, in front of all the security cameras and the dining hall’s high arched and trellised windows slowly breaking each of her limbs, while the poor creature tries to crawl herself out of the situation, blood curling screams sounding into the night, while finally being abruptly cut off by Erwin twisting her neck. But no, he had to be careful, his father would take care of the security cameras but if there would have been prying ears and eyes in the dining hall, then he wouldn’t have gotten away so easily. It was a dark, dull, and soundless night with clouds hanging so oppressively low in the sky, they produced thick white fog that snaked its way between the alleyways and immense gothic buildings. One street lamp was the only thing that lighted the small plaza in front of the four adjacent dorm rooms, its golden light resting on Erwin’s figure, revealing the soft blonde hair, determined and ruthless sapphire eyes, strong jawline, and tall, well built body. He was dressed casually, wearing his most comfortable clothes: jeans and a plain white t-shirt. He was supposed to be spending the evening with Marie up in his dorm room, enjoying some cheesy and petty romcom broadcasted on the TV, and more formal wear would disrupt the cozy atmosphere that would supposedly settle between them, that and blood would be a bitch to get out of them.
Huffing in frustration, Erwin checked the time again: 23:05. If Marie didn’t show up then it would have all been for nothing. However, just as he was making up his mind to go after her, the girl exited her dorm room and with a wide grin, spreading from cheek to cheek on her sweet face, ran into Erwin’s arms. He snorted and greeted her.
“Hello sweet lover, I was beginning to worry you wouldn’t show up tonight.”
“I’m terribly sorry, dear Erwin, but I might have had a change of mind regarding the outfit I was to wear tonight.” Marie chuckled as she let him go, settling back down on her feet. In the golden light, the girl was beautiful, her long blonde hair sitting comfortably on her dainty shoulders, her eyes shining almost green as blue mixed with yellow from the light, her cheekbones were high, just like his, and her lips rosy red. Erwin almost regretted having to kill her, but it was for the sake of everyone around him. It was his duty as head boy, as a son, and as a student to steal this girl’s life. He leaned down and pressed a kiss to her plush like lips and with a smile, grabbed her hand and began leading her into the direction of his dorm. His dorm was a just across the plaza in front of her own building. So with long hurried steps across the grass, they reached the entrance. All of the buildings were linked together in a square.
“Where’s the rush Erwin? Are you really so excited by our casual night in?” Chuckled Marie and hurried her pace to match his.
“Certainly,” answered Erwin, not even paying attention to her.
“The hallways are unusually quiet, so is the campus. Don’t you think it’s strange dear, that not even the staff seem to be present?” Continued Marie.
“Well, it’s almost Christmas, it suppose it would be kind of sad if they were to be hanging around campus instead of enjoying their time with their families. After all, they’re humans, just like me and you.” Erwin tried to answer her question, growing more annoyed by the second.
Finally they reached his room, and like the gentleman he was opened the door for his girlfriend, letting her in. It was the first time that Marie entered his room, so with a bit of excitement the girl started wandering through it, stopping to admire the little trinkets he had placed randomly around his room, like the telescope that was facing his window, or various maps that laid, carefully rolled and tied with black string. Erwin lingered behind the door and scanned his room looking for his weapon: a wooden baseball bat, scratched, chipped and stained red, that happen to be positioned right in the left corner of the room, closest to the door. He went and picked it up, gently trailing his fingertips over the rough surface. Giving it a few experimental swings, he called out to Marie as he was slowly approaching her.
“Like what you see, Marie?”
“Indeed, you have a lot of interesting things lying around here, but I can’t help but wonder if you would be so kind as to turn on the light.” She chuckled and slightly bent down to examine the telescope.
“It’s not necessary for what’s to come.” Erwin replied, and with a smile approached the girl in hurried steps, building momentum.
“Erwin?” Marie slowly tried to turn around as she was startled by his reply. “What’s that supposed to me-“ She tried asking, but before she could finish her sentence, the bat collided with her skull, breaking it to a million pieces. With a loud thud, the cadaver collapsed to the floor. Erwin sighed, it required so much work to kill somebody: drawing the victim in, killing it, carrying the body, and getting rid of it. He would have to talk with his father about getting a payment or some kind of reward out of it.
Rubbing away some of his sweat from his forehead, Erwin bent down and grabbed the body, throwing it over his shoulder, wincing slightly as the weight collapsed onto him. Satisfied, Erwin made his way out of the dorm room and into the darkness of the hallway, his whistling the only thing perturbing the eerie silence that settled over the school as if in mourning of their newly lost peer.
-
Twilight enveloped the academy. Combinations of blue, lavender, and light pink reflected off the Chapel’s pointed arches, ribbed vaults, and sipping in through the stained glass windows that adjourned each side of the building as Erwin made his way out and down the vibrant green lawn,  his footsteps levelling the grass where he stepped and the lifeless cadaver still slumped over his shoulder. It had served his purpose and it was now time to get rid of it. Quickening his pace, he headed to the woods right behind the Chapel. This was his least favourite part of his job. The forest was dense and light could barely pass through the crowns and branches of the trees. Nevertheless, the trees were lanky, twisted in unnatural ways with branches sharp like knives. The bark was a dark brown, with a coarse texture, which could scratch and cut if the individual touching it was not being careful. However, what unnerved Erwin gravely was not only the eerie darkness that seemed to swallow the forest but also the absence of fauna in it. Sighing deeply, he proceeded to walk into the forest.
Erwin could have sworn the greenwood was like a warm hole. Every time he went through it, time seemed to stop, the existence of anything beside the forest seemed to be erased, leaving him wandering through the gloomy sea of trees, desperate for an escape. After what seemed like an eternity, Erwin started to notice the outline of hundreds of newly dug out graves, each with a big pile of freshly turnt earth, especially made so that bodies like this could be dumped in easily and covered just as easily. The sight helped him ease his nerves a little bit. Unconsciously, he quickened his pace. This was the first sign that he was close to the graveyard. He soon found himself at the edge of the forest once more.
Not wasting anymore time, Erwin walked to the edge of the cemetery, at the farthest of graves he hoisted the corpse up and tossed it lackadaisically into its final resting place. With a frustrated sigh, he picked up the spade and started to dump the soil over it. The corpse looked nothing like Marie anymore, her clothes, once spotless and emanating the sweetest of scents, were now covered in blood, and her skin, once a beautiful olive yellow was now waxy white, every drop of blood squeezed out of her right through the wide open wound on her neck. The soil got stuck in her hair, painting the blonde brown, in her eyes, filling the glassy stare with bits of gravel and dirt, slowly covering and erasing every evidence of her existence. With one final flick of spade, Erwin managed to cover up the body completely. Breathing heavily from the exertion, and dumping one crimson red rose on the grave, he opened his mouth and voiced his last words to her.
“Merry Christmas and Happy Yule, may you rest in peace, Marie.”
