I was wondering, does Aster have a concept of smell or taste? I doubt they would be able to experience olfactory senses without connecting some sort of contraption to the computer that is capable of analyzing those substances, right? Would they even want to experience smell or taste?

yeah i think aster's "physical" senses are mostly just limited to tactile input, since they can interact with the 3d environment. smell and taste doesn't serve much purpose, being processes kept alive by the battery of the computer, it would mostly be just texture instead

some of you may have already noticed, but aster's coat tail (tails as aldebaran) canonically acts like a real tail now... i couldn't resist. it was just defying laws of gravity but having it wag is the cutest shit

for aster, short answer is no

long answer: Aster may be created to perform a very specific kind of role, the truth is that they're pretty lousy actors otherwise. They are created to be able to experience a range of emotion to better relate with their users, but don't actually know how to control it all that well, at least enough to squeeze out tears. As a result, Rigel (and by extension Aldebaran) is far more likely to start crying by accident than on purpose, while Vega is pretty limited in displaying emotion to begin with. Of course there's self-modding of their model, but that's too much hassle.

In fairness I think that means Rigel has a lot of things he could think about that could make him shed tears, but I don't think he'd ever consider that he could cry on command, let alone find much use in it.

Urs never was much of an actor to begin with, so they can't do it either. Honestly I'd say they have something of an opposite skill: holding crying in with a straight face or stopping if the situation calls for it. Though that might be a concerning skill to have...

as for aster the obvious choice was something like "Why CaelOS may be right for you", presented by Rigel in particular. but the more disillusioned they grow with their assigned place in the world the less I can see them being all that pumped to do it.

Rigel and Vega both would be a lot more excited to tell you what the world from their perspective actually looks like! how the processes are also alive, even if in a different way, and how they actually traverse and do stuff on the inside

then they discover being Aldebaran and you may get an Interesting insight on how weak the security of home devices actually is, and how you should Never own appliances that require firmware updates. you don't know what horrors hide in there and you don't want to know. 

urs Could talk about how living with an artificial yet blatantly alive being has changed them and their perspective on personhood, but I can't see him being exactly good or eloquent at talking about something like that.

instead her ted talk would end up being "Sapient AI won't enslave humanity but it Will annihilate our corporate overlords and this is why". alternatively, on a more humorous note, "Why you maybe Shouldn't design your city around a singular color". they're very tired of green...

thanks so much! ngl this was a difficult one to answer but I think this should be fitting enough

So at one point in the story Aster may try to start making a small presence on social media, at least someplace where it's easy to be anonymous and talking to people, possibly a few public forums or something like Reddit.

While they do grow into the groove of it, being personal and talking about themselves or their days, even if they completely leave out being AI/software, is something that is *always* scary.

Mostly because talking too much can possibly get TerraByte on their (and Urs') ass. Even if realistically TB wouldn't find out or care.

Urs however is a regular human with regular human fears. Socializing can be a struggle too but that's not exactly a "simple activity" nor "fear".

They're not too sporty nowadays but playing team games involving a moderately sized ball does invoke some kind of fear, if not discomfort. Being hit with a ball sucks no matter how long it's been once you've been actually hit with one.

This exchange is inspired by the Ukagaka (by @logicpng) talking about Aster flowers and me noticing the similarities between them and common daisies and googling if they're related. The family is Asteraceae btw, and they even share a sub-family and tribe!

I've had this scene rattling around in my brain for like a week now, now its finally out there, I'M FREE. Although tiny Aster is living rent free in my brain anyways, so I might have to draw more lol

I wonder if Rigel would be interested in ASCI or pixel art, since he says he probably couldn't do raster art. Also I was wondering if both of them have any interest in making music! I catch Rigel (Ukagaka) singing sometimes (are those from real existing songs btw?) and I think I've seen a doodle you made of Vega singing.

yeah I can see Rigel and Vega both cooperate on making ASCII stuff! Vega could help out with code to make little animations in a terminal too

Rigel on his own may be fairly proficient with vector art, and it's not like raster is completely out of his grasp either. he certainly Thinks he cannot do it because it requires human hand movements but he forgets that being in a 3d space means nothing stops them from figuring out how to actually Do Input into a painting program

music creation outright isn't something I considered before, but I can see Vega playing around to create drumlines

and yes the lyrics Rigel cites in the ukagaka are real songs! they're all the few songs that actually have lyrics in my playlist for him
