Without further ado: Loki's most selfless, kindhearted & merciful moments

This post was originally only going to be about Loki's most selfless moments, but I've decided to take this another direction. Through the mcu fandom & part of the Loki fandom, Loki is known to be rough, selfish, petty, short tempered, arrogant, cruel, reckless, uncaring, etc for whatever reason, so I've decided to make this master post breaking it all down.

(Disclaimer: gifs not mine) (big thanks to @nikkoliferous who helped me with some ideas for this post)

Standing up to his abuser and torturer to protect his brother and his people, knowing he likely wouldn't survive.

Loki had the Tesseract, he very well could have fled as soon as he saw Thanos' ship & survived while leaving his brother at the mercy of Thanos.

I'd also like to point out how Thanos went for Thor instead of going straight for Loki to obtain the Tesseract. Thanos had Loki for a good 6+ months, he'd know Loki reasonably well (with the mind control & torture and all), or more importantly how to break him. Thanos went for Loki's brother because he knew Loki wouldn't let him die at the cost of keeping the Tesseract, instead of causing Loki pain which he could have just as easily done to obtain it instead.

Sacrificing his life for Thor & Thor's love: Loki was only tasked with helping in taking down Malekith, not only did he go far beyond that, he risked his own life to save the lives of his brother & his brother's love (a life in which Loki said "was a heartbeat" in speaking of Jane's mortality). Loki had a prime opportunity to escape Thor & not be imprisoned once again once the fight was over but he stayed. I'd also like to point out just how gentle Loki is with Jane, making sure not to cause her any harm when landing on top of her while using his body to shield her from harm ⬇️

⬆️ & the fact that he didn't even have to think about doing so, this shows that Loki is used to being gentle, considerate & careful as not to cause anyone harm in a dangerous situation.

Sparing Odin's life: Loki very well could have killed Odin when taking over the throne at the end of The Dark World, instead he wipes his memory & leaves him in a retirement home where he'd be cared for. Odin hasn't shown Loki any mercy, but Loki shows it to him regardless.

Going back to Asgard to save his brother, his brother's friends & his people after being left writhing in pain, at the mercy of the Grandmaster who would have most likely killed him if he had been found.

Risking a fiery death to release Surtur, with no guarantee he'd make it out in time. He goes along with Thor's plan without question if he'd even survive.

Loki had a prime opportunity to kill Steve (he could have blasted Steve's head in Germany when he had Steve pinned down by the scepter to his head, the close proximity would have been an instant death. Instead he asks Steve to "kneel"), Tony (regardless of throwing Tony out of the window. Loki could have just as easily snapped Tony's neck & guaranteed his death), Thor (he deadass stabs Thor with the tiniest dagger in history *& doesn't even push it very far in* idk if a larger dagger would have actually killed Thor (likely not) but he still chose one that's the size of ant man), ETC, but chose not to all the while being under mind control & torture. He had prime opportunities to end the lives of many Avengers or severely injure them which would have been relatively easy for him but didn't. Loki escaped S.H.I.E.L.D' ship with his scepter, he could have gotten rid of the rest of them by browning it up (given just how powerful one blast from his scepter is, it would have been pretty easy to do so). Let's remember Loki knew the majority of the Avengers wouldn't even have hesitated to kill him if given the chance before his takedown.

As Odin: Sparing Lady Sif & The Warriors 3 after becoming king (as Odin). They've threatened Loki, betrayed him & committed treason against him while he was king in Thor1. The first thing they did when they saw him again after believing him dead & after being locked up for over a year in prison, was threaten to kill him. He had many reasons to charge them (especially as Odin because they committed treason to help Thor while he was committing treason *which the real Odin reacted to by telling his men to "stop Thor at any means neccessary"* & have them imprisoned, but he doesn't, he let's them live completely free without any form of punishment.

Going to Jotunhiem with Thor, Sif & The Warriors 3. Loki knew that Thor was likely going to start a battle, one of which had little hopes of winning, he went either way & faught alongside his brother & his brother's friends. Loki warned Thor that they were outnumbered & tried to stop his brother before he could do something foolish. He very well could have left his brother & his brother's friends to fight alone (or simply not have gone at all) but stayed to help.

(I'm aware that Loki is the one who let the frost giants into Asgard but he is not responsible for how his brother decided to handle that situation // This also very well proved that Thor was not ready for the throne. Loki could have simply let Thor become king & run Asgard into war. Loki didn't do it so he could become king because how would he have possibly known that Odin would all of the sudden go into Odinsleep? That's easy, he didn't! His plan was to keep Odin as king not become king himself. His plan also wasn't for Thor to be banished)

If Loki had not told the guard to tell Odin, they wouldn't have survived. If Loki had ever truly desired the throne at any cost, he could have simply let Thor go alone to Jotunhiem without letting anybody know.

Visiting Thor when he was imprisoned despite Thor not visiting him even once when he was imprisoned for over a year (not even when Frigga dead) until he needed Loki's help. Loki went to see his brother right away & even offered him the opportunity to rule along side him when Loki could have easily obtained this goal all by himself & ruled alone.

Loki also could have stayed on Sakaar as it's ruler (afer overthrowing the Grandmaster) & left his brother to face their sister alone.

Do all these actions sound like someone who's rough, selfish, petty, short tempered, arrogant, cruel, reckless, uncaring, etc?

I am not saying that all of Loki's actions and choices are right, I'm showing all the ways in which he could have done things differently to benefit solely himself.

As for Loki being short tempered: It took Loki over 1000 years of family abuse, neglect, drama, overshadowing, lies, etc & an identity crisis to finally break him. If that's not even-tempered, I don't know what is!
