Image 1: the Spy's compass. It's made of lead and doesn't point north. The dragon and anvil symbol is the same as found on Denver's sword
Image 2: the head of Joaquin Murieta. The Sheriff keeps the head locked up in the palace. Joaquin watches him through his dead eyes

The Head of Joaquin Murieta
The Joaquin that Harry Love executed did not commit the crimes he was accused of. He was an unlucky, previously nameless man chosen to put an end to the hysteria and panic amongst Anglo Californians.
Joaquin struck so much fear that they cut off his head after he was already dead. The head was preserved in a jar and paraded around oddity shows across California, until it was one day lost in an earthquake.

Here’s one I haven’t touched since summer but I finally got to finish now that I’m on break.  Based off La Belle Dame Sans Merci by Frank Dicksee.

A serpent burrows into underground caverns.  The tip of its tail makes the noise of a rattle as it twitches in hunger.  The tunnels it traverses were built by another’s hands - not carved by streams, but dug by one making a home.  Closer to the heart, there are impressions of the inhabitants, some pawprints big and many small.  The serpent can feel the thumping in their chests louder and louder, beating all together so they are not an irregular chaos, but a unit like a hydra that only make each other louder.  Glowing yellow eyes meet black beady ones, so dark, so polished like shining stone, eyes deep enough to sink into.  Behind them, six pairs of eyes just the same but smaller, huddled together to peer over the furry back of their mother.  The jackalope bares its teeth and tilts forward its horns.
Linocut to accompany a chapter of my western.

Wanted poster screen print.
Joaquin Murrieta was a California gold rush era Mexican bandit.  At the time, there were multiple bandits going by the name of Joaquin, and authorities essentially created the identity of the singular Joaquin Murrieta, who because he was a made up person with an unknown identity, became a demonization of all Mexican people at the time, because any Mexican man could be Joaquin.  Harry Love, California law enforcement officer, was the one to kill “Joaquin,” beheading him.  Likely the person he killed was a randomly victimized Mexican man.  Maybe a bandit, maybe not, regardless, racially targeted.  The head would travel preserved in a jar to oddity shows across the state, until it was lost in an earthquake.
Joaquin has become a folkloric figure and has been further explored in works of poetry and fiction.  Not long after the historical events, John Rollin Ridge wrote a the novel The Life and Adventures of Joaquin Murieta, which invented a backstory for Joaquin.  In the novel, Joaquin becomes resentful of Anglo culture after acts of violence targeted at his wife and family, and organizes an underground network of bandits who plan to overthrow Anglo society.  The poet Pablo Neruda wrote a cantata and play about Joaquin in which his origin is changed to make him a Chilean immigrant rather than Mexican.  During the gold rush, many Chileans went to California.  Chicano poet/boxer/activist Rodolfo Gonzales wrote the poem Yo Soy Joaquin(I Am Joaquin) about a shared Mexican identity, history, and struggle, connecting to the idea that Joaquin’s hardships are all Mexicans’ hardships, because of the way they were all victimized by his criminalization and unknown identity.
