hate exercising and realizing i've let go of a lot of anxiety and anger because i've overturned my fight-or-flight response.

hate eating right and eating enough and eating 3 times a day and realizing i'm less anxious and i have more energy

hate journaling in my stupid notebook with my stupid bic ballpoint and realizing that i've actually started healing about something once i'm able to externalize it

hate forgiving myself hate complimenting myself more often hate treating myself with kindness hate taking a gratitude inventory hate having patience hate talking to myself gently

hate turning my little face up to the sun and taking deep breaths and looking at nature and grounding myself and realizing that i feel less burdened and more hopeful, more actually-here, that i am able to see the good sides of myself more clearly, that i am able to see not only how far i have to grow - but also how much growth i have already done & how much of my life i truly fill with light and laughter and love

Shelly took a deep breath and contemplated a response for her husband. She considered unleashing all of her pent up frustration in a tirade that could shake the Earth’s core. The weekend had flown by and snatched freedom from her grasp only to replace it with a mountain of laundry and scattered Legos in the living room. Instead of shouting back at him, Shelly rolled her eyes and pulled another t-shirt from her son’s pile to fold.

“Baby, how the hell do I get him to sit down?” John rushed into the laundry room out of breath, searching for answers from his wife.

“John, I don’t know. You’re a Marine. Figure it out.”

“They don’t teach us how to wrangle a six-year-old with superspeed?”

Shelly shook her head. “Is it superspeed, or you just being too old to catch up these days?”

“Haha, very funny, Shell,” John deadpanned. “Come see for yourself.”

I read Between a long while ago and it’s one of my favorites. Liminal spaces already have that mystical , otherworldly feeling but you heightened it by Yahya’s own anxiety being on the run and the “strange” cashier.

Don’t know if you’ve been asked these before but….

What was your inspiration for the story?

How did you come up with the checkout attendant?

Any plans to revisit this in the future (Yayha makes a return trip)?

Greetings! ‘Between’ is something I’m super proud of and people don’t ask about it much, so I am very happy to get your questions.

My personal posts get lost in here sometimes, but at that time I was doing heavy research into Southern Gothic (I put most of that stuff on @friedredclay just to keep it as organized as I can) and some of those posts led me into liminal space and I fell down that rabbit hole. It’s a very visual, but also an emotionally heightened type of thing and I wanted challenge myself by trying to write it.

I’m also from a rural area and used to travel through rural areas a lot for my job so the sight of a gas station/Dollar General isolated on the highway is so common. Familiar. As country as it is, there’s no better food than a gas station hot bar.

To be completely honest, I don’t know where I pulled Charlie from. I love her though. She kind of sits on this line between innocent and ominous which is what you would expect from a woman working grave shift alone at a gas station in the middle of nowhere. She’s not scared of anything or anyone. And it was important that she was just welcoming enough but didn’t make Yahya feel too comfortable.

I had started working on a different liminal space idea, but as far as ‘Between’ I believe it’s one and done. That gas station is not a place you find intentionally, if it exists at all. But I think something about Charlie follows Yahya regardless.

Hmm, what do I read? Im about to sound super boring. My preferred genre of choice is fantasy and love to branch into sci-fi fantasy. So I am drawn to books like that. I recently found 2 I think I want to give a try and hopefully I can commit to that. 😬

Chris strikes me as someone who prides themselves in articulating how he feels, so the idea of him getting frustrated with his S/O not being as communicatively inclined seems legit to me. Not to mention, the writing is amazing!

Please don’t say you love me by @fairytelling: Every single one of @fairytelling’s Chris Evans pieces are LITERAL PERFECTION, and I highly recommend all of them, but I revisit this one the most because I’m a sucker for a dramatic breakup (only in my entertainment, though lol). It’s like reading a literal movie, and has definitely helped to to inform the way I write. Love, love, love it! 💕

Trying for No. 5 by @hlkwrites (NSFW): My reasons for loving this one is simple: If Chris Evans were my husband, I could see myself being seduce by him into having 5 children EASY lol! A perfect balance of sweet and steamy!

“I Don’t Think You’re Ready” by @blackwomanwriter: I love that @blackwomanwriter didn’t shy away from real concerns that I think would come up if a black woman were dating one of these über famous white men. This piece is honest, vulnerable, and raw in a way that I wasn’t expecting but honored to have read.

Kiss Me by @miyuhpapayuh: Objectively the most beautiful, poetic piece of smut I’ve ever read. Avoiding the redundancy often found in the genre, I am brought right into the story and held there until the erotic end. Nothing short of pure promiscuous perfection.
