Could you elaborate on what you mean by Gordon getting mischaracterized? Not for any real reason I just haven't heard the take before but kind of agree and am interested :o)

Took me a bit to get to this my b! It was originally a dig at myself bc i usually characterize him however i like w my headcanons but for an actual example:

When i refer to gordon being mischaracterized i think it goes rlly hand in hand when he is paired with benrey, i think some ppl forget he is a grown ass man w dick n balls/ref and woobiefy him for the sake of mid yaoi /j

Asides from that i havent seen it Personally but word goes that he is portrayed by some as this angry and even described abusive guy mostly for how he responds to being at his wits end in the series 😭they flanderize his very rational reactions to his environment as him being aggressive all the time

I’ve mentioned the concept of “The Player” and “The Game” and the “Layers of Fiction” within HLVRAI in various posts, especially those dealing with Gordon as a character and how he differs from Wayne, and I’ve finally caved in to my autism’s demands to create a visual aid to help illustrate exactly what I mean by the concept. 

So basically, there are 3 main layers of fiction within the story of HLVRAI. First and foremost is the topmost: the actual real world. Like, the one we live in. At this level those involved are the cast (Wayne, Holly, Gir, Baaulp, Scorpey, etc) and where the events take place is within a Half Life VR mod for the game Gary’s Mod. It’s an improv comedy video being preformed by actors. 

The next most obvious layer is the bottom one: the game world. This is the world in which the characters (Gordon, Coomer, Bubby,Tommy,Benry,etc) exist and in which the events of the series take place. The setting is within the laboratory complex Black Mesa. 

This is all fairly self explanatory. The real intrigue comes from the fact that the game world is…well…a game. It is, within the fiction, taking place within a special copy of the game Half Life. Knowing this, that therefore necessitates the existence of a second layer of fiction: the “real” world. Little to nothing is stated about this layer within the series itself, it’s only implied or vaguely referenced. Within this layer exists the presumed “Player”. This is the person who is playing the modified game of Half Life. This is not Gordon nor is it Wayne but rather a third character all their own. It can be said, then, that Wayne actually plays two different characters at the same time: Gordon and The Player. 

The world of The Player is to which Coomer is trying to escape. The Player is who Coomer addresses in his parting speech. He’s not talking to Wayne because that would just be Holly talking to Wayne since they’re on the same layer. It’s not to Gordon because Gordon, while seemingly somewhat aware of the unreality of his situation, does not fully understand that he’s in a video game and has even expressed extreme discomfort upon being confronted with the idea in the commentary stream youtube videos and is therefore clearly not just The Player.

There’s some complicated kayfabe going on and it’s honestly fascinating.

ok first off bubby looks great. he looks fantastic, thrilled to see him again. but also the whole trailer having half life 2 quality graphics and then benrey's shittyass model showing up halfway through is so fucking funny. of course he's the only one who still has a low poly model. i wouldn't have it any other way
