Pairing: Ethan Ramsey x f!MC

Premise: Ethan shows a different side of himself as he continues to grow closer to Serena and Alan notices.

Author’s Note: This has been queued up as I promised this part would be released this month and for once, it's fluffy ☁🤗 A portion of this was taken from OH Bk 1 Chp 1 - can you guess which scene? 😉 I hope you enjoy and thank you for reading 💖

As the days go by and they come up with a plan on how to tackle this project, Serena is no more forthcoming. She remains as quiet as possible, only speaking up when she’s sure of an answer, not wanting to get chastised by Ethan.

It’s even run over to their morning chats — she’s distant and standoffish. 

Ethan is entirely confused as to where this is coming from, but he doesn’t like it one bit. 

The project requires multiple iterations of the same process and they’re nearing the end of the first cycle. In order to check their progress, they need to extract flower petals from vegetable shortening, add an equal amount of rubbing alcohol, and combine over low heat. 

As Ethan goes to discard the extracted flower petals, Serena prepares the rubbing alcohol and adds it to the vegetable shortening in the pot. 

She begins to mix the two, only to realize she added too much alcohol, diluting the shortening beyond use, rendering their first iteration futile. Days of work, gone. 

And now they’re behind. 

Serena begins to internally panic. There’s no recovering from this — the shortening and alcohol have been combined and cannot be unmixed. 

Ethan is going to be pissed. I messed up such a simple step.

She immediately tries to make herself seem smaller, hunching over the burner and mentally preparing herself to get the dressing down of her life. 

“How’s it going?”

The fact that Serena slightly jumps as Ethan comes up behind her doesn’t go unnoticed by him. When she turns to face him, her eyes are blown wide, body still shielding the pot. 

“Is everything okay?” 

Serena stares at him blankly for a few beats, before stammering. “Please don’t be mad. I added too much alcohol and now the mixture is unusable. I’m so sorry, I don’t know what got into me. It was so simple, but I couldn’t even do it right. I’m sorry, Ethan, please don’t be mad.” 

He can see the regret and guilt written all over her face. But those aren’t the emotions that concern him.

Fear. 

The most prevalent emotion displayed on her face is fear. 

As he takes a tentative step towards her and the mixture she’s still stirring, she takes a half-step back. And that’s when it dawns on Ethan that she’s scared of him. 

His heart wrenches. 

It all makes sense now; Ethan is well aware of the reputation he has built at school. While he couldn’t care less what others may think of him, it does matter to him that Serena is frightened of how he might react to a silly class-related mistake.

He’d never treat her the way he treats their other classmates. 

Ethan reaches out, steadying Serena’s trembling hand in his. When she doesn’t flinch, he takes that as a good sign, but he’s unsure if it’s just because she’s still too scared to register anything else. Either way, he interprets it as a signal to continue.

“Hey… you can do this.

“We have extras. I’ll go grab one and you can discard this one.” 

Serena swallows and nods, going to do as suggested. 

As they come back together, Serena begins to re-measure the amount of alcohol, still trembling. 

Ethan gently places his hand on her forearm. With the warmth of his skin on hers, Serena zeros in, pushing everything out of her mind except for Ethan’s voice and his touch. 

“There you go. Nice and easy.” 

Serena makes a perfect measurement, adding it to the pot. Ethan nods in approval before beginning to slowly stir the mixture. 

After the items have been combined and have cooled slightly, Ethan pours it into a jar. They work in tandem, sealing and labeling it accurately, and placing it in a dark area to process. 

They both turn to look at the clock on the wall. There’s still time to spare before class ends. 

Ethan nudges Serena with his shoulder and whispers, “See? No worries.” 

Serena looks down at the ground before looking back up at him, smiling. 

Ethan returns her smile, happy that her smile reaches her eyes. That she no longer looks at him with trepidation.

As they smile at each other, Serena’s eyes twinkle. 

This is the Ethan I know.

They find a rhythm working on their project in the weeks that follow, reverting back to their playful banter and grow even closer. They even spend time at Ethan’s, supervised by Alan, using his kitchen to continue their project. 

Alan watches them from afar, mostly leaving them to their own devices as he wouldn’t even know where to begin to help them with all of the science. 

But what he does notice is how happy his son has been lately and it doesn’t go over his head how Serena can get Ethan to genuinely smile and laugh. 

Ever since Louise left, Ethan shut down, no longer the untroubled, happy-go-lucky kid he used to be. He became cynical, grumpy, and untrusting. This, coupled with the fact that he had to grow up faster than Alan had wanted — helping out around the house, making meals for both of them, not being able to join certain extracurriculars due to lack of money or time — broke Alan’s heart. 

It’s been over three years and he’s missed seeing his boy be carefree.

Although Ethan had always loved learning, Alan has never seen Ethan look forward to school so much before. Or enjoy working on a partnered project. So to hear Ethan fully laugh from his belly, to see the corner of his eyes crinkle, observe how they stand a bit too close together and the stolen glances he throws Serena’s way, Alan knows she’s special. 

Special in her own right, but also special to Ethan.

“This is amazing! A+!!” Serena clutches their paper, looking down at their grade, thrilled. 

As they walk out of school together, making their way to the pick-up area, Ethan teases her, “Did you ever doubt us?” 

Serena, overcome with sheer excitement at having overcome her faux pas in the very beginning of the project, throws her arms around Ethan’s neck. 

Ethan is taken aback, his arms awkwardly frozen at a ninety-degree angle, hanging in the air. 

“Thank you for not giving up on me.”

At Serena’s comment, Ethan smiles and relaxes, his arms encircling her shoulders, avoiding her backpack. 

“Thank you for being an incredible partner.”

Serena pulls back, hands on his shoulders, and looks at him with pure joy. Before he can say more, Serena’s mom pulls up to the curb. 

“I’ll see you after Thanksgiving!” She waves goodbye as she trots over to her mom’s car. 

Ethan can hear her squealing in delight as she tells her mom about their successful project. His hands are still tingling from their hug as he shoves them into his front pockets. 

He can’t help the smile that spreads, but also can't help the disappointment at the hug being too short. 

It isn’t until he’s on his way home, riding with Alan, that Serena’s words hit him. 

Thanksgiving. Five whole days away from school, responsibilities, classmates. 

And just like that, Ethan’s high fades and he’s left with the realization that it’s also five whole days away from her: the girl with the butterfly clips in her hair.

See above lol He was shooketh. Not something he ever expected from Genevieve. 

Was it early in their relationship or did it take them time? What picture was?

It was about 6 months into them officially dating. So, December of 2020. While they had been sleeping together for almost a year at this point, they’d only been really and officially dating for 6 months and that distinction was what helped Gen feel confident to send it. 

This is also after she’d finally told Ethan about Ryan, and her past trauma from and with him. And how it changed her relationship with sex, it’s not something casual for her and takes a lot of trust for her to go there with someone. So, again while they’d been sleeping together for a year, it was only in recent months that she felt like she could 100% trust Ethan and that his feelings for her were real. And with that trust and security came an awakening for her. She wanted sex more, she felt confident with it and was more open to new things. (New to her, but in term of the nsfw realm they were relatively normal and not that exciting of things.) 

Now she could felt like she wanted and could send him photos and articulate her desires and horny thoughts more. 

In comparison to what she sends him not, a photo of her in the tub was pretty pg, but at the time, it was a very big step. 

One that even Ethan knew took a lot for her to do. He was both proud and extremely turned on.

I think so. He’s an elder millennial, so he really did grow up with technology advances. There’s no way he wasn’t part of the first wave of sexting and nudes. I HC he got them from a few of his past girlfriends (not Harper tho) and ONS, he also had a collection of printed out photos stashed away that they’d given him. (He never looked at them, mind you, but he kept them because he didn’t feel right throwing those kinds of photos away) 

So, he wasn’t new to spicy texts, but I do think he didn’t like them all that much. I picture him getting one and then immediately calling the GF at the time, instead of continuing the texts.

1- When did you start playing Choices? What's the first book you played? 

I started playing back in 2018. I kept seeing this thing called “playchoices” trending as number 1 on Tumblr (lol remember those days?). This would happen, without fail, almost every week! When I clicked on it, the posts were all about the finale of a royal story (The Royal Romance!). People made the most hilarious posts, complete with memes. I had no idea what it was, but I gathered it was an app. I downloaded it, and the rest is history. 

The first book I played was Desire and Decorum. It was absolute torture because it wasn’t completed yet. So I binged the available chapters. Yes, I spent real money on keys and diamonds, telling myself at least I wasn't spending that money on drugs. It was so much fun waiting for a new chapter every week, even if I’m an impatient mess. 

2- When and why did you join Choices fandom?

I joined the fandom almost immediately after downloading the app. 

As I sat in my living room, tapping my foot and waiting for the new D&D chapter to drop, I went back into the playchoices tag for content. It felt good to find other people who loved the story as much as I did. There were other users out there who were also waiting impatiently for the new chapter, writing fics and discussing theories in the meantime. There were also some of the funniest memes I have ever seen in my life. At first, I would quietly read and reblog. Then, I slowly started posting my own thoughts and theories (which were not very good lol but hey, this is tumblr after all).

3- How did you pick your url name? 

My life is one hyperfixation after another… The one before Choices was Harry Potter. More specifically, the Marauders era. I used to write for the pairing called “Jily”, composed of Harry Potter’s (dead) parents. Kelsey (@takeharryandgo) is a witness of just how much I love James Potter, Harry’s (dead) dad. In fact, our shared love for the pairing and character is one of the things that brought us together. 

In short, this URL is a reference to James Potter the first, Harry’s (dead) dad. Not James Sirius Potter the second, Harry Potter’s (living?) son. 

I saved it as a sideblog, meant only for writing resources for me to use at a later time. One day, I decided I didn’t want the followers on my main page to see all the Choices spam I was posting, so I resurrected the JP blog.

5- How long have you been writing fanfiction?

I’ve been writing fanfiction since I was a literal child. I used to write in a notebook and my friends would read during recess. It was awful but they were into it. One day, I used up the whole notebook and my friend was desperate for the next part of the story. I told her I needed to wait until my mom took me to the store (literal child) to get a new one. My friend got me a new one by the end of the day lol.

TL;DR that puts me at about 20+ years of writing. 

6- What is your favorite Choices book to write about?

Without a doubt, Open Heart! 

7- Share the first fanfic you wrote with us. Do you still like it or would you change anything about it?

Oh god, the first fanfic I wrote was Lily Evans and James Potter from the Harry Potter universe. I forgot the exact title, but it was named after an Avril Lavigne lyric. Again, I was a child, don’t judge me lol. It’s handwritten in a notebook I still have somewhere, but I will never open it again lest I die of cringe. 

My first Choices fic, on the other hand, was a Desire and Decorum fic called “A Wedding Gift” that only like 5 people read at the time. 

8- What is your favorite fic that you’ve written?

Oof. This answer changes depending on the day you ask me. I always overthink it and end up saying picking a favorite fic is like picking a favorite child. To avoid being here all day, however, I’m going to say: Fake Husband, She Walks in Beauty, and Lovely.

9- Do you have a fic that you didn’t expect to be well received, but it was? What about one you expected to be but could use a little more love?

Definitely, the fic I didn’t expect to do well at all if my first Open Heart fic: Lovely. 

I was so naive back then, knowing nothing about the Open Heart writing fandom. I had no idea what format or tags to use when posting. I was afraid there would be no readers out there who wanted to read a silly little story about my MC posting a thirst trap. All I knew was that the latest chapter of Open Heart Year 2 inspired an idea that wouldn’t leave me alone until I wrote it. 

I posted it and I was so incredibly lucky to receive so much support. Words cannot explain how special that was. To this day, I cannot verbalize how grateful I am for that. 

There isn’t really a fic I can think of that could use more love. It always amazes me that anyone gives my fics their time. So any feedback my fics get will always be valued and treasured by me. 

10- If you could write only angst, fluff, or smut for the rest of your writing life, which would it be and why? 

Oh no. 

If forced to choose, I’d say fluff. 

11- Do you ever recognize yourself in any of your MCs or in your writing?

Absolutely! While I try to make every MC different, I often pull from experience when I write. My Open Heart MC and I have a lot of things in common (heritage, hometown, astrological sign, etc.) But I also wanted her to be her own character with life choices that are different from mine. Since I'm very boring, it definitely makes for better fiction that way. 

12- What element of writing do you struggle with most?

It depends on the day. Some days I struggle the most with dialogue. Others, my biggest struggle is descriptions. It's rare when I feel confident in both when I write. 

13- Do you have any neglected work you really want to finish?

*laughs nervously in unfinished series*

There are a few series I have yet to finish. Once again, I apologize for leaving them untouched for so long! I plan to get my shit together soon! 

14- If someone you know in real life (who isn’t involved in fandoms) asked to read your work, would you let them? If yes, what would you recommend they read first? 

No! 

I don't think I could look anyone in the eye if they read some of the stuff I've written, especially for Choices. 

15 - Are there any writers (published authors and/or fanfic writers) who influenced your writing?

I strongly believe that one of the best ways to learn as a writer is reading. As such, I believe I've learned from most pieces I've read, particularly published rom com novels. In the fanfiction world, I admire my lovely friend @takeharryandgo. I've had the absolute joy of following her writing for over a decade. And with every work, I am still amazed by her masterful way with words! And her characterization is always spot-on. I simply love to read her spellbinding work and learn from the master! 

Other writers/creators I admire are:

@heauxplesslydevoted- one of the first OH writers I've ever read! Her smut is top-tier!

@jerzwriter - her stories, dialogue, and characterization are a delight to read. Her angst is painful. Her smut is sizzling hot! 

@liaromancewriter - a true master at romance! Her writing style is magical and synonymous with the best of rom-coms! 

@genevievemd - I bow down because the amount of love and care she puts into every piece truly makes her work special! 

 @lucy-268 - I have always respected the amount of research she puts into every piece. She pours so much care into it so that the narrative flows seamlessly! 

@a-crepusculo - her writing is so vivid and immersive. Reading her work is like listening to the most beautiful of symphonies!

@writer-ish - she is such a master at the craft! Her characterization is so vivid that the reader will fall in love no matter the format. Her text edits are legendary! 

@bex-la-get - such a talented and dedicated writer! She also pours hours of research into her work, ensuring every detail makes sense! 

@potionsprefect - she's such a creative and talented writer. She develops writing ideas like no one else I've ever seen! 

@headoverheelsforramsey- I love her storytelling and characterization! She's created a beautiful, inspiring, and intelligent MC for all of us to adore!

@gryffindordaughterofathena - her writing style is one of the most original I've ever seen. Reading her work feels like reading the loveliest of poetry! 

@coffeeheartaddict2- the dedication she puts into her work blows me away! She's daring when exploring themes in her writing, and she's not afraid to pull from personal experience. 

@lsvdw-blog - the person I'm sending my therapy bill to. Just kidding! Her writing is beautiful, even when it's the most painful angst. 

@trappedinfanfiction - she is such a lovely writer. The amount of detail she's given both of her MC's back stories has my absolute respect! 

@quixoticdreamer16 - I adore her MC and the wholesome, beautiful background she's given her! 

@mysticalgalaxysstuff - Another MC that has stolen my heart. I am so happy she started writing this past year because she's a real talent! 

@peonierose - love her beautiful MC and the beautiful love story she built for her with Bryce! 

@cariantha - a brilliant writer with talent for days! 

16- Which one of your stories would you most like to see as a movie/series? 

I would love to see She Walks in Beauty along with its series (1800s AU) in live action. Imagine Ana de Armas and David Gandy in period costumes? That alone would be worth it! 

17- Do you write original stories? 

I've crafted and outlined original stories before but I've never actually written them. One of my biggest goals for the new year is to finally start. Wish me luck! 

18 -  What other hobbies do you have?

I love reading, hiking, and dancing! 

Yes, I picked the most “impressive” of my hobbies to seem cool. On most days, you'll catch me cuddling with my dog or bf watching YouTube/TikTok/Hell's Kitchen reruns lol. 

19 - What’s your favorite emoji? 

I used the orange 🧡 and purple 💜 hearts a lot because they're my favorite colors!

Bad Dream

Book: Open Heart, Book 2 Pairing: Dr. Ethan Ramsey x F!MC (Dr. Sawyer Brooks) Rating: Teen Warning: Some mention of mental health issues Category: Fluff Word count: 1.5K Summary: Sawyer has a nightmare while Ethan is out of town and despite the distance he is able to bring her comfort in the sweetest way.

A/N: To the anon who sent this ask, I’m sorry for taking so long to follow up. I had promised “Coming Soon” content, but the original idea for this fic was not working. So, I scrapped it and ended up going another direction, inspired by the song Bracelet by Lauv. Hope you like it!

Almost three months had passed since the attempted attack on the senator and Sawyer was doing fairly well.  Finally back to work full-time, going to counseling, and taking medication as needed. Despite the positive prognosis, Ethan knew there could still be setbacks.  Nor was he over his own fear of losing her.  So he continued to keep a watchful eye.  And being this far away caused stress and constant worry. 

It was supposed to be a quick turnaround trip.  The plan was to fly to Cleveland with Baz, consult on a case, and return home as quickly as possible.  But nothing had gone according to plan.  A diverted flight, lab work delays, and a challenging diagnosis kept him in Ohio three days longer than originally anticipated.

2:00 P.M.

8:30 P.M.

“You were right, Ethan,” Baz announced as he returned to the conference room with updated lab results.  “It’s POEMS syndrome.”

A couple hours later, Ethan and Baz had drafted a detailed treatment plan to present to the patient's physician of record.  

“Baz, we’ve been in Ohio much longer than I anticipated.  I need to get back to Boston.  Do you think you can wrap up this consultation on your own?  There’s a flight back to Boston leaving at 5am that I’d like to catch.”

“I got this, Boss.”

“Thank you.”

1:00 A.M.

After booking the flight and packing his things, Ethan laid on the hotel bed intending to catch a nap before his ride to the airport arrived.  Eyes closed but far from sleep, his phone buzzed and vibrated on the nightstand, Sawyer’s name flashing on the screen.  

“Rookie?”

He sat up and turned on the lamp when he heard his whimpered name, “E-Ethan.”

“Hey,” he said delicately, “what’s wrong?”  

His heart started to beat faster and harder, mind suddenly racing with all of the possible reasons for the broken voice on the other end of the line.  

Trying to stop herself from crying, Sawyer snuffled, “I just needed to hear your voice. Will you talk with me for a little bit?”

“I’m here,” he assured her, “whatever you need.”

With that specific request he understood the cause of her distress. Though not as frequent several weeks later, Sawyer continued to have nightmares about the poison attack.  This one likely the result of whatever triggered her anxiety earlier in the day.  

“Was it another nightmare?”

“Yeah, it was a bad one,” her voice was still shaking.  

“Do you want to talk about it?”

“Not really.  Is that okay?”

“Of course.” 

“I’m sorry for waking you up.”

“No need to be sorry.  I wasn’t asleep.  I was actually lying awake thinking of you.”

“You were?  What were you thinking about?”

One night after a particularly upsetting dream, Ethan brought comfort by revealing one of the moments when he started to realize he had feelings for her.  Since then, whenever they were together and Sawyer woke up from a bad dream, he soothed her back to sleep with another endearing memory. 

“Do you remember the leather wrist band you bought for me at the farmer’s market last year?” he recalled.

“You mean the friendship bracelet I gave you? Because you were being stubborn and wouldn’t admit that we were friends?” she wise-offed.  

“Can you hear my eyes rolling?” he came back with, earning a light chuckle from the other end of the line. “Yes, that’s the one.”

His voice now gentle, “I don’t remember if I ever told you, but I took it with me when I left for the Amazon.  You know that I convinced myself that it would be best for us to try and move on…but that didn’t mean I was ready to let you go right away.  With a foot already out the door, I realized that I needed to take a piece of you with me, so I went back for it.  I figured I’d wear it until enough time passed that I didn’t need to anymore.  I was so busy and distracted when I was working that I sometimes fooled myself into thinking I was finally getting over you, but at night when I was alone with my thoughts…” he exhaled softly, “well, they always drifted to you and I’d wake up missing you even more.”

Sawyer sniffed back sentimental tears as he continued, “The day that I didn’t need it anymore never came.  I wore that leather band every day until I came home.”  

“Thank you for telling me that,” she whispered.  “Want to know something?”

“What’s that?”

“When you first told me about the W.H.O. mission, I started following their Pictagram account.  After you had been gone for a few weeks, they posted a picture of you and you were wearing the bracelet.  And the night you came back, when we were talking in the beer garden, I saw it around your wrist. Just under the sleeve of your jacket,” she explained.  “It’s the reason I kissed you that night.  You’d never wear something like that unless it meant something important to you.”

“I see you’ve mastered the art of observation,” he joked before getting serious again.  “And it did.  It still does.” 

Sawyer’s phone vibrated in her hand as a notification alerted her to a new text message.

“Ethannnnn, you’re wearing it now?” touched by the gesture.

“This time it was the first thing I grabbed when packing for this trip. I wanted a piece of you with me while I was away.”

“I love…” she caught herself.  It’s not that she didn’t want to say it, she just didn’t want to pressure Ethan to say it back if he wasn’t ready.  “I love that.  It’s so sweet.”

“And far less creepy than pocketing a pair of your panties,” trying and successfully making her laugh.

“Well, I should probably confess that I’ve raided your closet and will be spooning your pillow so I can feel close to you too.” 

He laughed heartily at the mental image.  “Are you feeling better?”

“Much.”

“I’m glad.  Go have a cup of tea and try to get back to sleep,” he encouraged.

“Any chance I’ll see you tomorrow?” she asked hopefully.

“We’ll see, but I think the odds are looking good,” he replied knowing full well he’d be boarding a plane on his way home to her in just a couple hours.  

“Well, fingers crossed.  And Ethan?”

“Yeah?”

“Thank you,” she said most sincerely.

“Only good dreams now, okay?  Goodnight, Rookie.”

“Bye, babe.”

9:00 A.M.

Ethan entered the still apartment, leaving his coat and suitcase in the entryway.  Seeing no sign of life yet, he quietly made his way to the master bedroom.  Head just barely poking out from under the comforter, he found her just as she said, spooning his king size pillow.  

He carefully toed off his shoes and parted with his shirt and pants.  He removed his watch, placing it on the top of the dresser, but left his other accessory on.

Lifting the comforter, Ethan climbed into bed scooting up against her backside and wrapped his arm tightly around her.  Though jarring her from sleep, the familiar touch and scent instantly quieted her alarm.  

“Surprise,” he breathed into her ear before kissing her cheek and trailing down her neck.

With a raspy morning voice she uttered “Hiiiii” while her hands hugged his arm, the feel of braided leather under one of her palms.  

“Did you have better dreams after we talked?” he mumbled against the skin of her exposed shoulder.

Rolling over, she nudged him flat onto his back and slowly straddled his hips.  

“Mhmmm, the best.  And it looks like they’re about to become reality,” she smirked before leaning down and kissing him deeply.
